《The Lies and the Lives of the Taken》Frank 4

Walking out of the hospital, I stop my roommate across the street. Jenna turns around and her eyes light up. "Oh my god, you're okay!" she cries, putting her hands on my shoulders. "Can I hug you or..."
I smile at her. "Yes, I'm okay." Jenna pulls me close and I hug her back. Then she smacks me upside the back of my head. "Ah, hey! What was that for?" I ask.
"Don't do that again," she says. "Ugh, what am I going to do if you die?"
I look at her softly. "You know me, it's not like it was something I planned on doing. I was trying to save someone else but I didn't think about anything."
She gives me a look. "Well, next time, save yourself. You got your points for the year. Come on, let's go home."
The drive to the pharmacy is roughly half an hour but it goes by quickly while listening to the radio. The hospital gave me painkillers for the whole getting shot business and antibiotics to avoid any infections happening. There's also nausea tablets and another thing for my joints that Jenna has started calling Captain America vitamins. Back at the apartment, Jenna shuts the door, tossing the keys on the coffee table. "I made dinner already, are you hungry?"
I lie myself down on the couch, groaning when I finally can relax. "It smells good, I'll eat in a bit. What did you make?"
"Rindsuppe, it's beef stew," she calls from the kitchen. "How was your family?"
"Oh, there were relieved I was okay," I say, straining myself to adjust the pillow. "When they were called, I was in a bad condition so they didn't know if I was going to be okay. But they were happy to see me."
Jenna comes back, carefully holding two full bowls of soup. She lowers herself down and sets them on the coffee table. Then she drops down the placemats and puts the bowls on top. "Yeah, when I was called, you weren't doing well either but I was on my work shift so I didn't find out until later." She places a spoon in my hand. "Don't ever do that again."
"I won't, I promise," I say, stirring the contents of the stew and watching the steam rise from the bowl. "I just...I saw some guy walking past me and someone charging at him with a gun. The other guys didn't notice the gun but I did."
Jenna sits cross-legged on the couch, holding her bowl of soup. "You're a hero before you even took your Captain America vitamins." I roll my eyes at her while laughing. If I had my strength, I'd throw a pillow at her. "What happened afterward?"

I shake my head. "Literally, I don't know, I don't remember. I woke up in the hospital." I pause, starting to smile. Jenna gives me a look, waiting for me to continue. "I woke up and...this guy was leaning over me. He had the greenest eyes, I swear. And I look down, I'm holding his hand."
"Wait, did you know him?" Jenna asks.
"He looked familiar, then he said he was my boyfriend." Jenna's eyes widen and she's about to explode. "Hold on, let me finish!" I quickly say. "I was like, I have a boyfriend? And the nurses were like he seems to have minor memory loss. After a few minutes of checking on me, they said I was stable so they left and it was just the two of us. He told me he used that as an excuse to see me. He's the person I jumped in front of."
"He came to see you?" Jenna asks. I nod and she gives a warm smile. "That's kind of sweet. Like, he wanted to make sure you were okay."
"Yeah, that's the thing, he said he wanted to make sure I was going to wake up or something like that," I say. "He, uh, he gave me his number."
"What?" I hold out my arm and show her the faded ink on my skin that's still legible. "What was the intention of giving you his number?" Jenna asks. "Like, hey, that's for saving me there, let's get to know each other...or...?"
"I kind of asked him out?" I say. Jenna's face lights up. "Okay, I couldn't help it. He's really cute and just like he was already pretending to be my boyfriend so like obviously, I woke up to chemistry with him. I took a bullet it for him so he can take me to get coffee."
Jenna laughs, setting her bowl back on her placemat. I can't believe you asked someone out while in the hospital."
"I know but in my defense, I was on a lot of drugs."
Jenna stares at me. "Yeah, but you weren't acting out of character it seems. Frank..." She keeps giggling. "Ah, okay, what do you know about him?"
"Uh, well, he works for some airplane design engineering company. And he's some accountant or I don't know what but he's also a translator. Jenna, this guy knows 10 languages, not including English. Like, oh my god."
"How long did you guys talk?" Jenna asks.
"Eh, it wasn't that long, just long enough to know the general about each other."
She nods along. "So are you going to call him?"
"I mean, I, yeah, I want to," I start trailing off, "but I don't know what to say."

"Well, do you like him? In that way or in general?"
"I definitely like him in general," I say. "I don't know, he's like really attractive." She starts smiling, which makes me start smiling. "I don't know."
"Well, either way, I think you should call him."
"Yeah, I know. I just hope I don't bother him." Jenna bursts out laughing at me. "What?"
"Oh, you," she says. "Frank, if he didn't want you to 'bother' him, he wouldn't have given you his number."
"Fair point."
"You should call him right now."
"What?"
"Don't what me, call him. You got nothing to lose." I stare at her anxiously. "Come on!"
"Alright, alright," I say, reaching over and set down my bowl. I take out my phone and type his number in my contacts before calling him.
Jenna stares at me while we sit silently. "What's happening?" she whispers.
"It's ringing," I say. He'd pick up, right? After 4 rings, he still doesn't pick up. Eventually, I get an automated voice stating the voicemail has been disabled for this number. "Nothing," I say, hanging up. Voicemail is disabled? That's weird. Was that even his number?
"Well, you can try again later. You said he has some fancy job, he's probably working."
"Yeah, you're right."
After dinner and taking my meds, Jenna and I are watching TV. It's some German show Jenna likes, she put the subtitles on for me. This is honestly the easiest way for me to learn German. Halfway through the third episode, my phone in my back pocket starts vibrating. I take it out and it's Gerard calling me back. Jenna glances over and realizes. I get up, hobbling over to the kitchen. "Uh, hello?"
"Hi," a deep voice says on the other end. Nothing else.
"Uh, hi, Gerard?"
"Speaking," he says. Okay, so it is Gerard.
"Hi, it's Frank?" I say. "Frank from the hospital."
"Oh, right, right," he says, lighting up. "How are you feeling?"
"Well, because of the painkillers, pretty great," I say. "How about you?"
"Doing good, there was a shareholders meeting again. Let me tell you, it's very difficult translating when there is an angry Chinese person shouting and an angry German shouting back and your American boss doesn't understand either also yelling."
"Why were they yelling?" I ask.
"I don't know, it was a rather mundane conversation about bonds and loans. Either way, made it more interesting."
"Seems like you had a long night," I say laughing. "Are you doing anything now?"
"I'm back at the hotel, decompressing from work."
"Ah," I say. It's probably too late to do anything right now. Not a lot of places are open, besides bars but I shouldn't be drinking with my medication. "Have another one of those meetings tomorrow?"
"Eh, not necessarily a meeting. I would call it a lunch in," he says.
"Well, you think you can do something beforehand? Maybe get coffee?"
There's a pause on the other end which makes me nervous. If he didn't want to talk to me again, he wouldn't have given me his number. "I don't think beforehand will work. I have to get things ready for that.afterwardwards, maybe, depending on how lunch goes. It's very difficult to plan accordingly sometimes."
"I have a class actually in the late afternoon," I say. Environmental and Nature Photography. I would say I could skip it but I really don't want to since I love it.
"How about dinner?" he offers.
"Dinner?"
"Seems the evening is all we have available. Is that okay-"
"Yeah, yeah," I say. "Dinner would be great. Uh, any place in mind?"
"Yeah, I got a few. When does you class get out?"
"5 p.m. but sometimes it goes on a bit longer."
"Well, we can meet up at 7. There's a place called on Getreidegasse, really nice there."
"I think I know what you're talking about," I say. "So meet you there at 7?"
"Yes, unless you have a better idea?" he says jokingly.
"None that I could think of."
"Well, I'll see you tomorrow."
Walking out of the kitchen, Jenna notices me and pauses her show. "Was that him?"
"Yeah," I say happily.
She leans over the armrest looking at me. "And?"
I take a seat next to her, she's waiting for me to tell me to tell. "So I offered to go out get some coffee but he was busy and then he asked about late afternoon but I have class. So then he suggested dinner. So yeah, I'm going out to dinner with him?"
"Wait, oh goodness, is this like a date?" Jenna asks.
"I don't know, I don't think so?"
"Well, it's a start."
"Yeah, definitely." She leans back on the couch, resting her head on the pillow staring at me. "What?"
"You like him, don't you?"
"I mean-"
"Frank?" she asks, raising the pitch of her voice.
"Maybe just a small...infatuation, but that's all." She smiles giddy and I just laugh it off. "Alright, play your show."

Shadowcroft Academy for Dungeons: Year One
Build a Dungeon. Slay Heroes. Survive Finals. Wounded Army vet Logan Murray thought mimics were the stuff of board games and dungeon manuals… right up until one ate him. In a flash of snapping teeth, Logan suddenly finds himself on the doorstep to another world. He’s been unwittingly recruited into the Shadowcroft Academy for Dungeons—the most prestigious interdimensional school dedicated to training the monstrous guardians who protect the Tree of Souls from so-called heroes. Heroes who would destroy the universe if it meant a shot at advancement. Unfortunately, as a bottom-tier cultivator with a laughably weak core, Logan’s dungeon options aren’t exactly stellar, and he finds himself reincarnated as a lowly fungaloid, a three-foot-tall mass of spongy mushroom with fewer skills than a typical sewer rat. If he’s going to survive the grueling challenges the academy has in store, he’ll need to ace the odd assortment of classes—Fiendish Fabrication, Dungeon Feng Shui, the Ethics of Murder 101—and learn how to turn his unusual guardian form into an asset instead of a liability. And that’s only if the gargoyle professor doesn’t demote him to a doomed wandering monster first…
