《Camp Camp | Max/Neil》Chapter 4 | Just Kids

Neil woke up to David's normal loud wake up calls. He sighed. Nothing changed, he thought.
He looked over at the still sleeping Max.
A blush painted over Neil's freckled cheeks.
Max turned in his sleep so that he was facing Neil. He was holding his teddy bear, Mr Honey Nuts.
Though Neil had made fun of Max for having a stuffed bear, he found it cute.
Neil watched as Max dropped his bear on the floor.
Max began kicking around in his sleep. He was muttering things and his facial expression changed from peace to distress.
Acting quickly, Neil picked up the stuffed bear and placed it in Max's arms, calming the still sleeping boy.
Neil sighed in relief.
"Wake up campers! Today is another day and it's time for camp activities!" Neil heard David call. Again.
Max groggily woke up. Neil panicked and stepped out of the tent he shared with the grumpy camper.
Max opened his eyes and quickly shoved his bear under his pillow. Not before saying goodbye to it of course.
He got up and grabbed his blue hoodie.
Max quickly pulled the hoodie on and walked outside of his tent.
He saw Neil walking towards Nikki's tent and speed walked over to him.
"Hey Neil! Today is your camp. What do you say we try to blow the place up with a massive volcano experiment thing." Max said, smiling.
Neil smiled, "actually, I was thinking we could try something else. I was working on this explosive powder back at home and I brought a lot of it. We can explode anything with it!" He said, a flame in his eye.
Max listened, smiling.
"Hey - how did you know we were doing my camp first? We just got here!" Neil asked, his smiling face replaced with confusion.
"I stole David's clip board and saw the scheduled camp activities. I still have the schedule. And check it, some other girl named Lillian is here for science camp! Now we have two nerds!" Max said, taking out the activities schedule and pointing out the activities for today.
Neil nodded and took a closer look at the schedule.
"Neat." He said sarcastically. The last thing he needed was another kid like Space Kid. Or, technically, Neil. Neil frowned at the thought of Space Kid stealing his name.

"So, what do you want to explode first? The counselors cabin? The Quarter Master's store? How about the mess hall?" Max said, excited for the explosion.
Neil smiled. "Why don't we explode all? Then there would be a massive fire." He said, getting even more excited with the mention of fire.
Max laughed, "hell ya!"
They shared an epic high five and proceeded to walk to Nikki's tent.
Nikki ran out of her tent, "hey guys! What are we gonna do today?" She yelled, as hyper as ever.
"We're gonna explode some shit!" Max said, smiling.
Neil blushed as he saw how cute Max's smile is.
Nikki jumped in the air, pumping fist up. "Yes! Chaos! This is perfect!"
Nikki calmed down a bit as they all began walking to the mess hall to get the crappy breakfast.
They got in line and talked about what they had done during school.
Max watched Neil talk about how he dissected a frog. He blushed at how excited Neil was to talk about dissecting things and how sciencey shit worked and whatnot.
Neil finished talking as Nikki took over.
Nikki rambled on about how she got a big Venus fly trap as the trio got breakfast and sat down.
Max told Nikki to sit across from him and Neil.
Nikki did as told.
Max played with his plastic knife. Every now and then he would glance at Neil.
Neil silently ate his mashed potatoes. He occasionally looked at Max from the corner of his eye.
Everytime their eyes met they would look away, both of them blushing.
Nikki shoveled her food into her mouth and didn't notice how the two boys acted.
David walked over to the three campers.
"Have any of you seen my clipboard? It has the schedule of what we're supposed to be doing today. I completely forgot what was planned." He said.
Max shrugged.
"Haven't seen it around. Maybe you left it in your room or something."
David sighed. "Alright, how about you, Neil? Or Nikki?" He asked, looking at the other two campers.
Nikki shrugged and continued to eat while Neil simply shook his head.
David sighed and nodded. "I guess that means we're doing nothing until I find that schedule. Oh well."

Neil watched as David walked over to Daniel and Jasper and talked to them.
Max looked at his food. He frowned.
Neil pretended not to notice as he poked at his mashed potatoes.
"So, seeing as we have the day to ourselves, what do you guys wanna do besides blow stuff up?" Nikki asked, finishing her food.
Neil thought for a moment.
Max didn't seem like he really wanted to answer.
"Blowing shit up is fine for now."
Nikki and Neil nodded.
After sitting around the mess hall for a bit, David got an idea.
He looked at Daniel and Jasper. "Do you guys want to help me take the kids out hiking? It'll be loads of fun!" David said, smiling widely.
Daniel and Jasper looked from David to each other.
"Sure, why not." Jasper finally said.
Daniel shrugged. "I'll gather the hiking supplies we'll be needing." He said, walking off to find the right equipment.
David smiled even brighter and turned his attention to the campers
"Ok campers! If I can have your attention please!" He tried to call the kids' attention.
He failed. Miserably.
After watching David try to gain the attention of the kids for the second time, Jasper sighed.
"Everybody listen to David, he has something to say!" He yelled.
All of the campers looked at David.
David quietly thanked Jasper and looked back at the campers.
"Today, seeing as I had lost my schedule, I decided that we should go camping! I think it will be a fun and active activity to do on our second day at camp." David explained, putting his hands on his hips.
Daniel came back with plenty of backpacks for everyone in his hands. He set them down on the table next to David and stood beside Jasper.
Nikki immediately stood up and grabbed a backpack, smiling excitedly.
Neil and Max followed her more slowly, followed by the rest of the campers.
Jasper smiled. "Alright everyone, grab a backpack and go outside, but stay in front of the mess hall. We will explain where we're going out there."
The kids obeyed and walked outside.
"So, um, where are we going, Davey?" Jasper asked, grabbing a backpack for himself.
Daniel also grabbed a backpack, as well as David.
"Remember that big oak by the creek that we used to go to to hang out, Jasp? I was thinking we could take the kids there! It's far enough that hiking there would be fun, but not to far that it would become exhausting." David explained.
Jasper smiled. "That's a great idea, Davey! C'mon, let's go and take the kids."
The three counselors walked outside and regained the campers' attention.
"Ok kids, we have the perfect place to go hiking. It's a wonderful little area with a creek and a giant oak! Now, there are a few rules that you must follow -"
The kids all groaned.
"- For your own safety. Don't worry, they're easy to follow! Rule number 1; always stay on the trail. We don't want anyone getting lost and hurt, now do we? Rule number 2; always do as the counselors say. That means, if we tell you something, your gonna have to listen. And rule number 3; have fun!" David said.
Max groaned. "This sucks. We were gonna blow shit up! Not walk around the woods!"
Nikki smiled and elbowed Max, "aw, c'mon! This is gonna be fun! We get to spend time in nature and I can cause chaos! It's a win-win."
Neil looked at Nikki. "For you. I was actually enjoying the thought of doing pretty much nothing today! Now I have a chance of having an asthma attack." He said, a pit of fear in his eyes.
Max looked at Neil. "You still have your inhaler, right? As long as you have that, you'll be fine. Even though I agree with you, I bet Nikki's also somewhat right. Now we have a chance to make Daniel and Jasper leave!"
Nikki nodded and Neil sighed. "Alright, I guess you're right."
Max smiled slightly but tried to hide it by turning around and walking after the campers. "C'mon, guys." He called as the three counselors guided the campers down a trail.

Journey West 5000
With her parents murdered and her brother abducted, a trainee Monk of the Gun pursues the one responsible, the Bull Demon King, undefeated Warlord of the Crimson Army.Struggling to track down her enemy while braving the dangers of the wilds, she enlists the help of Sun Wukong, but 500 years under a mountain have taken its toll. Unstable and weakened, will he be more hindrance than help? Can he become the warrior he once was?A Monk and a Monkey journey across a world...... where the remnants of technology are seen as magic, while pockets of humanity strive to drag themselves out of ignorance.... where the descendants of animal-human hybrids, once created as instruments of war, now seek to dominate the world as demons.... where beings who call themselves Immortals and Gods preoccupy themselves with selfish pastimes, ignoring everything else. Among other things, a story about growth, grit, and being better than the person you were yesterday. Here's my rambling on why I'm writing Journey West 5000. Journey West 5000 is my crazy ambitious writing project to adapt a classic epic called "Journey to the West" for a global, modern audience. It's a sci-fi story disguised as fantasy, and has some road trip + monster of the week elements (as does the original Journey to the West). No system, definitely no harem, gradual power progression. Hmm, what else can I put here so potential readers know what to expect? My writing style for now is mostly "show don't tell", because I believe that readers don't need to have everything pointed out to them, and that they should be allowed to make up their own minds about characters based on the actions of those characters. I'm also trying to be less long-winded (a weakness pointed out by some friends) in order to write according to something Neil Gaiman said, which is to write as though I'm the one who has to pay for every word, not the reader. This will bring down my chapter word counts, and might drive away potential readers, but I believe there's value in learning to compress and be concise. All chapters posted here will have been edited. Constructive criticism, comments, and feedback would be very much welcome and appreciated. Please, please help point out any typos or grammatical mistakes, I'm striving to minimize those as much as possible. Above all, I hope you enjoy my story.

Unwitting Champion
"In stories this is always easy. There's magic and powers, and quick steps to claiming that power for one's self. This doesn't feel true for me. I'm supposed to be a Champion, whatever that means, and yet I don't feel important. I don't have all the bells and whistles, which honestly feels familiar even in a new world. But what was I expecting? I haven't had the worst life - there are people with worse problems than mine - I've known what it is to struggle, to be pulled down instead of being helped up.This is nothing new."When in great peril, the Kingdom of Althor has no choice but to send a call into the void, beseeching the Fates to bring them a man who would save them from the coming darkness. Unfortunately the path the Fates chart is often unknowable to men and the Champion who appears is not what the kingdom expected.Unwitting Champion is a story of a guy displaced, dealing first and foremost with trying to survive in a world where he is no longer a person but a tool, and - at least from the reaction of those around him - a shoddy one at that. His major goal is to survive long enough that either he can run or find a way home, because as exciting as the possibility of learning magic might be, he would rather have a boring life than a short life.
