《Trust Me (Daryl Dixon x OC)》{5}

We drove quite a bit outside the city. I wasn't one for long quiet drives so I popped on my radio and listened to my cd collection. Angel by Theory of a dead man played. I zoned out thinking about my last tour in Afghanistan. All the people I had to kill. Men. Even children that one hurt that most I looked at the scar I had on my arm several burn marks from all the months of torture. Before I knew it I was snapped out of my trance by a car alarm and a red mustang pulling up around me.
It had to be Glenn and he was having the time of his life. I laughed at him. It was cute. Like nerdy cute. Glenn was far from my type. After another 30 minutes I saw what looked like a RV up ahead. We came around a mountain point. There were lots of people. I hopped out of my truck and walked over to see Rick.
"Hey you doing okay?" I asked him knowing he was probably blaming himself for Merle getting left behind.
"He had a brother."
"Who"
"Merle has a brother. His name is Daryl."
"Look cowboy, it's not your fault okay. He got himself in that mess. You can't blame yourself." He nodded.
"You are a welcomed sight." An older man said.
"I thought we lost you folks for sure." He gave Morales a hug.
"How'd y'all get out of there anyway?" An older man with brown hair asked. I could see him clearly but I could hear them all.
"New guys. They got us out." Glenn said
"New guy?" The brown haired man said.
"Yeah, crazy vato. Just got into town." Morales said then yelled at us.
"Hey helicopter boy! Sniper chick! Come say hello!" He yelled as Rick got out of the truck we walked up together.
"Guys a cop. Like you." Morales said. That's when I looked up and so did Rick.
It was Shane. My big brother Shane. I froze. Tears threaten to spill from my eyes.
"Sh..Shane?" I said loud enough for him to hear. He looked at me with shock on his face as I saw tears fall from his eyes. I ran over and basically tackled my brother. He hugged me tight and started to cry into my shoulder.
"Shane oh my god. I...I didn't think I would see you again." Shane pulled back.
"Are you kiddin' me little sis I thought you were dead. You're... You're supposed to be in Afghanistan." I laughed through my tears.

"I came back early to surprise you and all this shit happened. I went looking for you, Rick, Lori, and Carl. I couldn't find any of you." He hugged me again and then I heard a kid yell
"Dad!" I looked over to see Rick walking up to a little boy running.
"Carl!" He said through crying eyes. It was Carl and Lori. I stood next to my brother who looked a little off as he tried not to look at Lori hugging her husband. I had my whole family back but there was a tension in the air. Shane walked over and hugged Rick.
We spent the rest of the day settling in. I made sure my bike was still hooked up to my truck properly.
Night fell and we were all sitting around a campfire as Rick told everyone how he made it out of the hospital. How he got to Atlanta and found me. Carl and Lori were cuddled up into Rick and I was sitting next to Shane. I could tell something was up with him. I just couldn't put my finger on it.
"Mom said you died." I heard Carl say.
"Well she had every reason to believe that. Don't you ever doubt it." I say Lori looked up at Shane and they exchanged a strange look almost telling each other something.
"When things started to get really bad, they told me at the hospital that they were gonna medevac you and the other patients to Atlanta, and it never happened." Lori explained.
"Well I'm surprised after Atlanta fell. And from the look of that hospital. It got overrun." Rick said.
"Yeah looks don't deceive. I barely got them out." Shane finally says something to Rick.
"I can't tell you how grateful I am to you, Shane. I can't begin to express it." Rick said, trying to explain to Shane how much his actions meant.
"There go those words falling short again." Dale the older guy said. We all sat there silently till we heard a fire crackle. Shane and I looked up as Ed put a log onto his fire. The thing was big enough to send a smoke signal.
"Hey, Ed, you want to rethink that log?" Shane said
"It's cold man." Ed said basking in the bright light of his fire.
"Cold doesn't change the rule, does it? Keep our fires low, Just embers so we can't be seen from a distance." Shane seemed to be getting irritated with Ed. It was a smart rule who knows what out there anymore.
"I said it's cold. You should mind your own business for once." Shane got up. I could tell now he was pissed. He walked over to Ed. I could tell he was whispering. I could barely make out what he was saying. I saw Carol get up and pull the log out of the fire and Shane stomped it out. Then he got down a bit and was talking to her and her daughter Sophia. He got up and told Ed that he appreciated his cooperation. Then he walked back over and sat back down next to me.

"So Shane how do you know this fine young lady?" Dale said. I smiled at Dale's comment.
"Well this extra large pain in my ass is my big brother. His family adopted me when I was 10." I told Dale as I punched Shane in the arm.
"Yeah well you're a bigger pain in the ass Raven." Shane said. We sat in silence for a bit then Dale spoke again.
"Have you given any thought to Daryl Dixon? He won't be happy to hear his brother was left behind." He said to Shane.
"I'll tell him. I dropped the key. It's on me." T-dog said Rick shook his head.
"I cuffed him. That makes it mine."
"Guys it's not a competition. I don't mean to bring race into this, but it might sound better coming from a white guy." Glenn said, trying not to fire up an argument. He was right. If Daryl was anything like his brother then T-dog would be my last choice in who tells him.
"I did what I did. Hell if I'm gonna hide from him." T-dog said. I knew he wanted to be brave and tell him.
"We could lie." Amy said.
"Or tell the truth. Merle was out of control. Something had to be done or he'd gotten us killed." Andrea said getting her sister to not go on with her childish ways.
"Your husband did what was necessary. And if Merle got left behind. It's nobody's fault but Merle's." Andrea said, looking at Lori.
"And that's what we tell Daryl? I don't see a rational discussion to be had from that, do you? Word to the wise, we're gonna have our hands full when he gets back from his hunt." Dale said he knew Daryl a little bit better than most of the group.
"I was scared and I ran. I'm not ashamed of it." T-dog said.
"We were all scared." I said trying to help T-dog not feel so bad.
"We all ran. What's your point?" Andrea said, sounding like she was trying to guilt trip him. He already felt guilty enough I could tell from the look in his eyes he didn't need this.
"I stopped long enough to chain that door. Staircase is narrow. Maybe half a dozen geeks can squeeze against it at any one time. It's not enough to break through that. Not that chain. Not that padlock.." He said looking at the group. He stopped and looked right at Andrea.
"My point, Dixon's alive and he's still up there handcuffed on that roof. That's on us." He finished and got up and headed for his tent.
Slowly one by one everyone went to bed. I didn't though I stayed staring into the fire watching it die out. I was playing with my knife. I hadn't realized that I was giving myself little cuts on my arm. I was watching the fire and flashbacks started to hit me all at once. The feeling of a hot iron rod on my back. The cigarette burns along my arms. The whip scars. Each knife slash to my body. Each one started to hurt worse and worse as I sat there staring into the fire. I could see each one of their faces.
I was snapped out by Shane placing a hand on my shoulder. I pulled him down and held the knife to his throat. "Hey Raven. You're okay. It's just me Shane." I froze and removed the knife from his neck and helped him up.
"Shit, I'm sorry Shane."
"Hey it's okay. I was just coming to check on you. Are you okay?" I looked at him and sighed.
"Yeah I'm fine." He looked at my arm and the small drops of blood forming.
"Raven. You're not fine. Talk to me."
"I keep thinking about Afghanistan and Iraq. Since all this I cannot stop thinking about it." He wrapped his arm around me.
"Your okay little bug. You're here with me. Not there anymore." I smiled at my big brother.
"Thanks big bro. I'm gonna go to bed." He nodded. I got up and walked towards my truck.
"Goodnight Shane."
"Goodnight little bug." I went to my truck and crawled into the back, changed my clothes then got into my sleeping bag. I laid looking at the roof of my car. I couldn't figure out why I could fall asleep. So I got out, sat on the hood of my car and smoked one of my American Spirits. I finished it and finally got tired. Then I crawled back into my makeshift bed and fell asleep.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.

It was then did John use a dark magic that did he got them out of that situation. But in exchange for the princess's safety, John Sarvod was exiled from A'vetheas for using 'demon magic'. What will he do after the life he knew was uprooted and taken away from him? Will the 'demon magic' that caused his exile from the Elven Tribe bring him into a slow descent into madness? Book 2 description: Having found a life for himself outside of A'vetheas, a family, enrolled to a good school, and a potential romantic partner, John Sarvod continues on with his life the best he could, carrying himself forward, until... He messes it all up again. This time, however, it isn't because of his magic. It was by his own demerit. What is the cause of despair? Find out in Consignor Book 2. Old description (Without spoiler) John Sarvod, user of the most powerful healing spell [Heal], the rare ability to heal and recover all injuries, is the only human that lives in the Elven Tribe. Though he was gifted with [Heal], he could not cast any magic other than his one and only [Heal]. Aside from his current training to become a royal scribe, he is known to all elves as the ‘Healer of A’vetheas’ and had gained a certain amount of respect from them due to how much he works. But life for him in the Elven Tribe, A’vetheas wasn't never always like this. Because he was human, and that the Elves have isolated themselves from the outside world, his presence initially was not welcomed by the elves that thinks highly of him today. It was all thanks to the Elven Queen who brought him in, and the Elven Princess, Raina Valindra Eridi, that he could reach this day. But things changed when the Raina that he so adored used the teleportation device for a small date with him, where they met with danger that the [Heal] that he relied all this time could not save him from… In his desperate attempts to save Raina, John ended up committing a taboo of the elves. As for his punishment when he returned to A’vetheas? That was just the beginning of him, continuing the path that he had inevitably taken prior to the life he had before he lived in A’vetheas. This is a story of a not too average person end up becoming something that he could have never imagined. A monster? A demon? A god? Only time will tell. It is just a matter of time that John Sarvod would embrace his true self. Content Warning because I want to have flexibility, and maybe it gets overwhelming at times. I have a backlog already, this story won't be dropped. Edited: romance tag to action tag, story has more or less of both, but yeah. There's slice of life tagged in because my story progresses not too quickly (by my opinion) I like to take things slow, I suppose. :3
