《The Blood Queen》Dinner with the King part 1

"Are you finding your way around?" Roman asks breaking the awkward silence at the dinner table. I opened my mouth to respond but Dominic cut me off.
"Oh she definitely is" Dominic says bringing his wine glass to his lips and I bite my tongue and smile back at Roman.
"I am. It's a beautiful castle" I say and Theodore looks between Dominic and I uncomfortably.
"Tell me how you met already?" Theodore asks.
"I ran into her, wandering around my garden" he says and Roman gives me the wide eyes to which I just shrug.
"You are quite an adventurous one aren't you?" The blonde across the table says. "I believe we met while you were trying to get into Dom's room" she says with a smirk in the corner of her eye. Hearing her call him Dom made my stomach twist in knots.
"I was wandering the castle I didn't even know that was behind the door. Now I do and I can't make the same mistake twice" I respond with a short quipped smile of my own and take another sip of wine.
"You're feisty I like you" Thaddeus says to which Roman laughs. "Tell me, you never answered the question the other day. Where are you from? You have a very faint accent when you say some words" Thaddeus asks curiously and I swallow the lump in my throat.
"Just south of here actually. I spent a few years travelling around the world but I've spent the last couple decades in America, where I met Henley" I say gripping my wine glass a little tighter.
"How old are you?" Dominic asks leaning forward and I avoid looking over at him.
"I feel like that's the second time I've been asked that question since I've been here. Don't any of you know you aren't suppose to ask a woman's age?" I tease and Roman smirks while everyone except the blonde and Dominic remain silent. I could tell Dominic was slighting annoyed and the blonde very obviously didn't like me.

"I don't think we've introduced ourselves by the way. I'm Alina" I say to the blonde forcing a smile and she gives me a tight lipped one in return.
"Victoria" she adds. "Dom's fiancé" she adds placing a hand on his forearm and smiling at him. Breathe escaped me as did words. My head was spinning and my heart felt like it had been crushed.
"Fiancé?" Thaddeus asks with his wine paused just inches from his lips. Dominic clears his throat and takes a drink of his.
"Yes" Victoria says showing off the ring. Henley gasps and grabs her hand to take a closer look.
"But what about-" Charlie starts but Victoria cuts him off.
"We weren't going to announce it until after your wedding but I just couldn't wait" she says with a big forced smile.
"Wow congratulations" Henley says and I silently stand up.
"Yes congratulations" I say with a light smile holding back tears in my eyes. "Cheers to your engagement. I think we are going to need more wine" I say.
"A maid will bring more" Dominic says and I grab my glass from the table.
"I'm already standing" I say and walk quickly to the kitchen. Leaning against the sink I gripped the counter top tightly. We were soulmates. And although he couldn't feel anything from me I could still feel it all. The pain was more than I ever expected and I gripped the countertop so tight the marble cracked. Jumping back and letting go I ran a hand nervously through my hair and wiped the tears out of my eyes. I didn't let any fall as I held them back.
"Do you have a mate Alina?" Dom says and his deep voice sent a shiver down my spine as I straightened my back and turned to face him leaning against the door frame topping up his glass as well.

"I was looking for that" I say grabbing the bottle of wine he held out to me and filled up my glass. "I did" I say barely above a whisper. "Congratulations on finding yours" I say louder.
Dominic laughs and for once it was without a cocky smirk. When his laugh dies down he shakes his head with a smile. "You humor me Alina. You know she's not my soulmate. You have this way about you that I can't quite put my finger on but I would recognize that accent. You were around when the Queen alive weren't you?" He asks dropping what little bit of emotion he had in his eyes and stepping closer to me. "Because I think you were. And I want to know who you are" he says driving the words across the room until he's a mere foot from me.

Dungeon Darwinism: Deepest Dungeon
Dungeons are a lot like sea turtles. They’re born in clutches of dozens, if not hundreds. A hundred may be born at one time, buried in still burning cities, or in forests where the canopy hides the sky, or in ocean trenches at the bottom of the sea. But only one in a clutch ever makes it to the surface. Everyone knows about dungeons— monstrous factories that emerge out of the earth, full of riches and Arcana and power— and monsters. But most of humanity only know about the dungeons that make it. Mark doesn’t know anything about dungeons. He isn’t from this world, and only as a victim of circumstance has he become an unwilling half of a dungeoncore. The other half is a Dark Lord. (Rewrite)

Toothpick
“Hello! My humble audience! I, the Bard of the North, am going to tell you a tale. Nothing new, nothing old. A story of a hero, some may say, others a poor boy who was hated by the world.” The storyteller paused as he waited, right timing was everything when telling a story. Pacing… Too slow and the audience became bored then left without tossing even the smallest of coins. If he spoke too fast and rushed the story. It would leave the audience confused and having no reason to be impressed. So like any good storyteller, the Bard has to do a balancing act of sorts. Not too slow, not too fast. Just perfectly in the middle. “In a shattered country in the south, a novice princeling has the ambition to mend a torn tapestry that is his birthplace. Struggling to fend off those who would usurp the throne in an unending civil war spanning centuries. A mercenary that left only death in his wake, unable to stave off the monotony and peace of life. He looks back at the path laden with bodies, wondering if it was all worth it. Wandering souls summoned by a madman, travel away from a wasteland in a foreign land, the first alone, the others as companions. A deity, ancient in her years, waiting to be freed from a duty she no longer enjoys. For all these people and their stories, none are the hero of this tale. No, the hero is not grand, not wise, not ready.. he was punished for nothing of his doing, who was an outcast that was unloved by many, including his father.” This was always the big reveal novices use to jump off into their story. He did not start here, instead, like any good fishermen, he set the bait and waited until the fish bit before pulling. As he saw the audience's eyes focus, he then started the backstory. The harness, that stopped the listeners from having metaphorical whiplash. The foreshadowing. “But that is not where the story starts. No, not even the hero's birth. Where the story begins, is the boredom of the deity, a deity many know of. She who hunts for the impossible, the guide for those who have lost the path, the Huntress of Mallon--” A small pause, a short breath. “--All old names for a single powerful being that has roamed the grounds of this continent longer than any line of kings or queens, lords or ladies. A being of worship for many an individual…” One last breath. And he began singing the first verse.
