《Love And War - A Fortnite Story No.4》12 - Drifting Away

While on his run Jones happened to pass by Holly Hedges, the town Skye and Tina lived at. Marigold was an occasional visitor as she eventually got her own place in Lazy Lake.
He noticed Midas leaving presumably their home and dusting off his suit. Smiling warmly at him, Jones runs over.
"Midas! Hey! Glad I caught up with you!"
He looks up at the approaching blond.
"Oh, John. What can I help you with?"
"I want to ask if you're feeling alright. After everything that happened y'know."
"I feel fine. Why do you ask?"
He begins walking away with a lingering Jonesy trailing behind.
"Oh c'mon dude, you know I worry. I just want to be sure. I know you'd never lie to me..." Jones says.
Midas pauses in his tracks.
"... unless there's something you're not telling me?"
He looks into the distance, staring at the nearby Weeping Woods, putting his hands together as his hair covers his eyes. He looked like he was contemplating something.
"...Midas?"
"... sorry John, but I need to get home. I have things to do."
"Why don't we go together then? I'm heading back anyway."
Jones reaches out his hand, expecting Midas to take it. Strangely though, he turns away. This obviously confuses Jones slightly.
"No. You'll be fine without me."
He quickens his pace, leaving Jones behind. Midas sighs in frustration, clenching his fists.
"That stupid human. I'm gonna get exposed if I'm not careful. I need to find a way to...push him away..."
Jones sighs sadly, hugging his arms and deciding to go back the way he came to go home. His heart hurt, being rejected by Midas like that.
"Something's bugging him. And I wanna know what."
--------
A week later...
*ring ring*
"Hello?"
"Jones...i-it's Marigold... I'm calling on behalf of Skye and Tina..."
"What's wrong? Are you crying? Is everything... okay?"
"I was going to visit the girls this morning. But when I arrived...they..."
*sniff*
"That imposter got them. They've been turned to gold."
"No..."
"What... would you like me to do with their statues?"
"I'll ask Jules to drive over and collect them. We're keeping all of the imposters victims in our garage. Although at the rate it's going, we might not have much room left."

"Alright. I'll await her arrival. By the way, keep your distance from Midas. I know you love him...but I have a bad feeling about him."
Jones nods as Marigold hangs up the phone. It had only been a week or so and already more and more snapshots of himself were turning up at his door, turned to gold.
It baffled him. This imposter was absolutely bonkers about his snapshots, and it made him quite uncomfortable. Why it was targeting his snapshots in particular, and now Skye and TnTina had fallen victim as well.
Plus, as of late, Midas had been very... distant from everyone. Especially him. It was like he was back to his old self from the days of the Agency, except he didn't have his work to excuse himself from people.
At this point Jones didn't want to stand around and watch anymore.
"Alright Midas, I'm reaching my limit. What's going on with you?"
He found the distant man in the garage observing the statues.
"I believe I could say the same thing John. You do know that there's this thing called privacy, correct?"
"Yeah I know. But I'm worried about you. Why are you avoiding us? ... avoiding me..?"
Midas hums deeply and turns to Jones, snapping at and cornering him.
"Listen to me John. I don't want anything to do with you. I have more important things to do than be lovey dovey with an imbecile like you!"
The blond could feel his heart breaking into pieces. But he resists his want to form tears in his eyes, despite how much Midas was hurting him.
"Midas... I-I..."
"I don't care John. Now go, I'm busy."
Jones hugs his arms and goes to leave, taking one last look back at Midas. As he walks away from the house with a thought in mind.
"I'm 100% sure now that ain't my Midas. He would never say anything like that to me. Maybe the real one left a clue of his whereabouts somewhere?" He thinks to himself. "But I'm not that good at figuring stuff out...but I do know a snapshot who is. Just gotta pray he's still alive."
Jules, who was just about to hop into her car sees him run by. While she didn't care too much about him, she looked a little worried about him.

"Jones? What's wrong?"
He doesn't respond as he's too far away for him to hear her. With a sigh she gets in the car and goes to where Marigold will be waiting for her.
Midas watches the car drive away. A smug and unkind smirk creeps onto his face. He chuckles to himself noticing no one but another Jonesy snapshot in the distance.
"That was much easier than what I was originally going to do to him. I'll keep him alive a little longer..."
----------
Back on the Mothership...
It had been a week or so since Midas was abducted, and needless to say, he was worried sick for his family down back on the island. Dark Jonesy could sense his fear and decides to try and comfort him.
"Calm down? How can I be calm about this?" He breathes. "My family could be in danger for all I know and I'm stuck up here with these ridiculous looking aliens unable to do anything!"
The aliens outside their cell turn around, slightly offended by Midas' remark. He places his hands on the window, leaning against the wall.
"Ha. Even if we wanted to, how would a human like you stand against our forces in your condition?" One of them asks.
"Why don't you let me go and you can find out." He answers back, gold slightly going up his arms.
Dark Jonesy notices what the aliens are doing and tries to stop Midas.
However he doesn't listen.
"Ah well. It's not like you'll be able to do anything. Our spy's already stolen your identity and taken your place."
"What?"
"It'll be as if you never even left the island. And one by one your family will get picked off."
Midas growls in frustration, banging on the window as gold gets closer to the hidden taser on his back.
"No! I won't allow it! Let me out of here-!"
Dark Jonesy flinches while Midas yells in pain as the taser is set off again. He collapses onto his knees, his hands shivering from the shock as the gold quickly drains away again. Two aliens open the door and begin dragging the nearly unconscious man away, probably to see how his powers worked and how they can use it.
Is Dark Jonesy's call after them, but he's completely ignored as the door is locked again. He sighs, but suddenly gets an idea. It was risky, but worth a shot if it meant trying to reassure Midas that his family was okay.
He closes his eyes and begins concentrating on forming a vision in his mind.
-----------
Meanwhile...
Jones slides down the hill, careful to not lose his balance and begins ascending up another hill.
"Jeez I know the guy's paranoid 24/7 but does he really need to live out here?" He asks himself.
As he nears the top of the hill he comes across a small house with a garage, plus the lighthouse in the distance. He goes up to the door and, while hesitant at first, knocks on the door.
The door slowly begins to open, revealing a snapshot with an exceptionally long beard. Case in point, it was Bunker Jonesy.
"H-Huh? What are YOU doing here?!"
"...I need your help."
"What? W-Why me? Isn't there a different snapshot you could ask for help?"
Jones sighs, trying his best to calm the paranoid snapshot down.
"Listen, if I could I would. But right now they're disappearing left and right because an alien disguised as Midas is killing them." He tells him. "You're my last chance. Plus, no offense to the others, but your one of the smartest snapshots I have."
Bunker Jonesy let's out a shaky breath and opens the door a little more and steps out in front of him holding what looked like a peely smoothie.
"Alright. W-What can I help you with?"
Jones smiles a little, gently putting a hand on his shoulder. He flinches a little, but doesn't tell him to back away.
"I want to go back to that castle outside the slurp factory. That's where I found Midas...or the alien disguised as him. Maybe he left me a clue as to what happened and where he is."
Reluctantly, Bunker Jonesy nods his head in agreement.
"Let's... just get this over with. I don't want to be seen with I.O on the loose."
And both Jonesies walk together to the castle in the distance. Jones looks ahead with a hint of determination in his eyes. If Midas was trapped on the Mothership, he wanted to rescue him as soon as possible.
"Hang tight Midas. If you're up there, I'll find you."

8 121Until You Do It Right
The world ended on December thirty-first of the year two thousand and twenty, precisely at the stroke of midnight. The human race began to be systematically exterminated by the spawn of the System. We were given a chance to defeat them, to take back our place at the top of the food chain. We failed. The first to perish were those who bravely rebelled. The soldiers. The defenders. One by one, they fell. In their final moments, they begged for aid. Nobody replied. The next to succumb were those who feebly cowered. The deniers. The leeches. Together, they fell. In their final moments, they cried out into the darkness. Countless voices replied in kind. The last to decline were those who shamelessly ran. The deserters. The cowardly. Alone, they fell. In their final moments, they whimpered quietly. There was nobody left to answer. The final human to die was a survivor. A runner. As he died, he begged for salvation. His prayers were answered. He was offered a chance to save himself, along with all of humanity, and he took it. This is his story. “I sat in the dark and thought: There’s no big apocalypse. Just an endless procession of little ones.”― Neil Gaiman, Signal to Noise. I am absolutely new to writing and will take any and all constructive criticism. Please give feedback, it is greatly appreciated. I will update the tags as they change, and I hope that you enjoy this little story I'm writing! Quick warning: Seamus is intentionally a flawed character, and this story is going to explore those flaws and perhaps even change a few of them. I do not agree with all of his actions, but it is what it is.
