《The Island's End- A Fortnite Story No.5》12 - Separation

Half an hour later...
Jules carefully wraps the last of the bandaid around Jones' injured hand, finishing it off by tying it up.
"Okay. That should do it." She hums. "Does it hurt still?"
"Ah, n-no. Not much. I'll be fine. It's him I'm worried for."
Jones motions to a shivering Midas in his lap clinging on to him tight. Jules rubs her bandaged head, shuffling closer to them. She puts her tanned hand on his golden one, rubbing the back of it with her thumb.
"Oh brother... What happened when I fell unconscious?"
"Well after Ares stabbed my hand and storm out I saw Midas having a massive panic attack. I...think he still needs time to calm down." Jones sighs sadly. "To make matters worse, I'm being kicked out the house tomorrow morning."
"What?!"
"Blame Ares cos apparently this house belongs to him now."
Jules whimpers slightly but resists the urge to start crying again.
"Should I order us something to eat? What do you want?" She asks, getting her phone from her pocket.
"Chicken burgers sound good right now. With lettuce and mayo, that okay with you Midas?"
He nods with a sniffle. Jules smiles, getting up.
"Okay, 3 chicken burgers with lettuce and mayo coming up."
And with that she leaves the room to order. Midas shuffles slightly, raising his head closer to Jones and his lips close to the blond's.
"P-Please don't leave. I-I-I can't bare to be here without you." He sobs.
"Hey, hey. Shhh. We can still talk via messages. You have my number after all."
"That's not enough. I won't have you beside me to hug. To comfort me. To make me feel safe...I-I..."
Midas slowly begins to blush, gazing lovingly at Jonesy.
"I.. won't feel your lips on mine anymore." He mutters as Jones wipes his tears with his thumbs. "Your soft, perfect lips...those warm tender moments we share..."
Jones blushes as well at the flirty comment from his beloved. He cheekily smiles nonetheless.
"Haha, nah... Your lips are the most perfect ones dear..."
They lean closer to each other, their gazes switching between one another's eyes and lips. In the cold empty silence they seal the deal with a slow yet gentle kiss.
The fear of this forced separation lingered in each of their minds as they try to grasp the feeling of one another, both afraid to lose the other.
They separate lips briefly to catch their breath, their foreheads colliding together. Midas, desperate for his affection, takes it slightly further. He locks lips with Jones once again, this time curling a hand around the back of his neck. The blond emits a soft quiet hum, welcoming the action.
In return he places his hands on Midas' shirt in the center of his chest where the Ghost logo tattoo should be.
M: "Please don't let go. Don't ever let me go."

J: "I don't wanna leave him here with that bastard but I don't have a choice anymore..."
They separate again, lost in each other's eyes. Jonesy brushes a thumb over Midas' cheekbone.
"Jonesy, I know this sounds dumb...but..."
"Yeah?"
"Do you... still love me? Despite everything my dad did to you?"
"Of course sweetie. Nothing will ever change that. Your dad may be trying to separate us, but I'll call or text you every day to check up on you and Jules."
He takes his glittering hands.
"I promise."
At that moment, before they can embrace each other with another kiss, Jules returns.
"Okay, should be about half an hour before dinner arrives." She tells them. "Oh, Midas. Are you feeling okay now?"
"Mhm. I do feel better, thanks to you and Jones."
Jules smiles with a laugh.
"Well, I didn't do much. Jonesy here is the one who looks after you the most." She chuckles slightly. "But yeah dinner should be here soon."
The engineer slides next to her brother, wrapping an arm over his shoulders. She suddenly gets an idea. A silly, but fun idea.
"Hey, you know what sounds fun?"
The boys glance over at her.
"A slumber party! We can stay in Midas' room for the night. Cos right now I don't think either of us are going to be comfortable sleeping alone."
Jones grins, liking the idea.
"That DOES sound fun! But, who's gonna get the bed? It's big, but not for three people.."
"Well I suppose I can't stop you two from sleeping together since you've been doing it for a month or so now." Jules admits, hinting that she'll probably be sleeping on the floor.
All three think for a moment, until Jonesy remembers something.
"Oh, I know!"
He briefly runs out the room and quickly returns with a yellow bean bag, a few pillows and blankets.
"I had a bean bag lying around in my room. You can borrow it for the night. It beats you sleeping on the floor."
Jules smiles at the kind gesture.
"Aw, thanks."
-------
Another half an hour later...
Before long everyone was finishing up their burgers and fries. Jones hums happily, mayonnaise on his cheeks. Midas chuckles slightly, taking one last bite.
"I'm normally not the one for greasy food, but I suppose it just feels good right now." Midas says, coating his last chip in ketchup before eating it.
"Greasy food is good! It's delicious." Jones laughs with a smile. "I love it a lot!"
"I can tell dear, you've got mayonnaise all over your face."
Midas grabs a nearby tissue and begins wiping his face clean of the mayonnaise.
"Honestly Jonesy you're a grown man but God you're a messy eater sometimes."
"Aw c'mon, you know you love me."
Jules smiles, chuckling at the boys.
"Y'know, I don't think I've mentioned this before. But you two are so perfect for each other. You're always there for each other when one is down and upset." She admits, smiling sweetly at them. "I'm glad you were able to find someone Midas, truly I am."

Midas blushes with the smallest smile.
"Thanks Julie bean. Maybe someday you'll find someone to share your life with."
"Haha, maybe. But I'm not really interested in looking for someone right now. I'm content with how I am."
In the heartwarming room, the front door downstairs suddenly opens. Jones slips out of bed and peeks through the bedroom door. Ares was downstairs leaning against the table with a bottle of beer in his hand. He slowly closes the door again, locking it this time.
"Ares is back. But it's okay, cos I've locked the bedroom door."
"Well, he's probably drunk again. So we ought to keep it down." Midas hums.
------
A few hours later everyone was fast asleep. Jules curled up on the bean bag with blankets covering her up. Jones and Midas on the master bed, covers draped over them.
Midas shivers under the covers, turning over with his head nuzzled under Jones' chin and checks the time.
12:45am
He couldn't sleep despite how tired he was. It wasn't just the dread of Ares storming in to abuse the shit out of him keeping him up, he couldn't stop thinking about the flashback he saw earlier that day.
He'd do anything to get dragged into a dream to escape this cruel reality he lived in, even for just a few minutes. He wanted to know more about Oro and his past.
With a sigh he closes his eyes, focusing on the war that occurred between the two courts.
-----
"Stop being so pathetic!"
Midas awakens with a gasp, hearing that voice. He was in a throne room, one decorated with details similar to the Cubes. The other thing he noticed is this time, he's not wearing Oro's outfit. He was still in his nightshirt and bottoms.
"Huh? Is this...the Cube Queen and King's palace?"
Looking straight ahead he notices the blacked out outlines of the Cube Queen and King. They seemed to be arguing about something.
"My queen, this war is getting out of hand. We must end it now."
"You only want to end it now because you're afraid!"
"Half of our court have been killed! What else can we do?!"
"Stop being so dramatic! Oro and his court can't hurt you as long as I'm here! Understand?"
"Yes, dear. Of course I do."
"Remember, as long as you're there to rule, we will come out on top. Our court is looking to us."
"I know.."
"Good. Now help my henchman with loading the cannons. He should be waiting outside."
Midas watches the king exit through a door. Feeling compelled to follow him, he gets up and goes through the door. He finds the king gazing out a window. Out of the corner of his good eye he notices someone.
He didn't recognize them as they had a hooded cloak covering them up. They draw a sword from a scabbard attached to their hip...
And pierce it through the Cube King, killing him within seconds.
----
Midas gasps awake, a hand on his head. That dream was certainly something.
"Someone killed the Cube King with a sword...but who is the question."
He turns over in bed and suddenly notices that Jonesy was gone, and in his place was his ring Midas turned into gold. He panics and checks the time:
7:55am
Midas practically leaps out of bed, grabbing the ring, puts on his slippers and grabs his dressing gown from off the door hooks. He dashes downstairs and sees Jones opening the door, turning back and noticing him.
"Hey Midas. Awake in time to see me off huh?" He greets him sadly.
Midas runs over to him, clutching the golden ring.
"Jones you left your ring behind on my bed. Don't you want it?"
"I left it so you have something to remember me by." Jones explains as they step outside. "I also left something in your bedside table draw. Probably gonna need it for your little mystery with Oro."
Midas glances at the ring, feeling tears form in his eyes. He couldn't hold his emotions together. This was too soon. He wasn't ready. Jones pulls him into a tearful hug, him also unable to contain his emotions.
"I'm so sorry Jones. This is all my fault. I didn't mean for any of this to happen!" He cries. "I-I-I should've done something instead of just lying there on the floor! I-I should've-"
"Shhh, please don't get upset baby." Jones pleads. "Besides, if Ares found out about our relationship a lot sooner, I suspect it wouldn't have been long before I got booted out anyway."
Midas struggles to get himself together, sniffling as tears slide down his face.
"Where are you gonna go though?" He asks.
"I'll see if your agent Skye will have me around for a while until this blows over."
"Haha, with your enthusiasm I'm sure Skye will have no problem having you around."
Jones and Midas snicker with small smiles before the blond brushes a hand over his cheek. Midas melts into his touch, leaning against him before they share a kiss. It was definitely more on the passionate side.
It's unfortunately cut short as a hand comes between them and separates them. Ares glares at the boys, grabbing Midas by his wrist and dragging him away.
"Stop being a baby M. This little thing you have for men, it's just a phase. You'll get over it."
"No, wait! Just a few more minutes!! Ares-"
"I'm not asking you M. Now get inside!"
Jones wishes to take Midas back, but knows full well it's too late. He was banned from ever entering the house again with Ares there. The tears begin to flow as he walks away, hugging his arms and wishing it was Midas he was hugging instead.
"I'm sorry I couldn't protect you Midas... You and Jules..."

Sturmblitz Kunst: Becoming a Dissident for Martial Arts
"I don't care what you read in some old, dusty tome. You can spend decades chasing an outmoded cultivation method that'll probably lead to a faux-breakthrough trap from the Emperor that turns you into a walking impurity tumor, or you can give me a couple months and I'll teach you how to punch through someone's head." - Zelsys "Sevenfold Storm-conqueror" Newman, Founder of the Newman Family The world at large has just begun its recovery from the nigh-apocalyptic War of Fog. The Tower Must Fall - Combat Gardener
If you're interested in a conceptual, ground-up rewrite leave a comment and tell me what you loved about it. I've got a pretty good idea of what everyone hated so there's no need for expounding on that. Gardener? A support class? This can't be! What was all my hard work for? Forget this world. Forget the System. Even if I'm a lowly support class, I'll take on the Tower and take them all down! Since the System appeared one hundred years ago, humanity has been divided into three: combat classes, intellectual classes, and support classes. Assigned at the moment of high school graduation, one's class determines their future. Rowan wanted the most out of life. A combat class, an intellectual class, either would be fine. When he is instead assigned a support class, Gardener, he notices the System is completely rigged against support classes. Refusing to give up on his dream of realizing his future by his own terms, Rowan challenges the Tower, the seat of the System and home of the Hero-King, in hopes of bringing the entire System to its knees. Season One complete. Permanent Hiatus, Pending Rewrite. Important notes: -LitRPG fantasy -Rowan is not perfect. He's got flaws, emotions, and personal issues to work through. If you want a perfect, overpowered MC who makes the right decision every time, this is NOT the work for you. -This story opens with a negative situation and an emotional growth arc for the main character. Please don't review until chapter 30 because the arc is not complete until that chapter. (Chapters are short, that's an average RR book's chapter 10) -No harem, no rape, no isekai, no romance -Questions? Please ask!

CW: Contains mildly graphic scenes of violence/death, topics of unwanted pregnancy/abortion, scientific experimentation on sapient beings, depression/suicide, grief, and trauma. The tone of this fiction is often dark and distinctly dystopian in lighter shades of Margaret Atwood, though where there is darkness there is always hope and light. On Hiatus Until September When the School Year Begins and Mom This story takes a considerable amount of time and mental energy to complete. I thought I had enough backlog and time to post it as a serial while COVID kept my child home from school, but it turns out while I can quickly write other pieces, I cannot produce the quality I need with this one at an acceptable rate. We'll resume in September when my days are much freer. Thank you for your patience and stay tuned for a different storytelling romp more suited for a serial platform in the meantime.
