《More Than What He Seems - A Fortnite Story No.1》Chapter 2 - Floating Gold

*2 months later...*
Date: 20th August 2020
Waking up to the smell of the salty seas is something I've slowly gotten used to.
After the events of the blown up Agency and the huge wall of water crashing down to the island, I barely managed to nab a well crafted boat near Dirty Docks before the worst of the water hit us. Containing a barrel of fishing rods, a control panel for steering the ship and a megaphone connected to a huge speaker outside, this little ship was ready for quite the rocky ride.
The strange thing was, however, ripped and dirty 'Join Ghost' posters were strewn about the place. Whoever this ship belonged to sure knew what side they were on.
Within the 2 months I've remained on this place, I had to resort to crafting a small resting place under the floor of the ship, complete with a bed, table and chest of drawers for clothes and other possessions. But even with all of this, I'm still missing something:
Company...
Someone to talk to.
Skye hasn't contacted me in months, and god knows where the other agents are. I just hope they're all alright.
Shaking the bad thought out my head, I step outside and look about the waters.
"Seems like a good time to go fish up some dinner." I grin, taking a fishing rod. Taking advantage of the motorboat attached to the ship, I lower it into the sea. "Oh, and just in case."
I rush inside and take out my pistol, putting some ammo inside and, making sure it's loaded, put it inside my pocket.
*****************************************
*Out at sea, 6:30pm...*
"Jeez, not many bites today." I sigh to myself, yanking back my fishing rod with a small fry resting lifeless on the hook. "Then again, there have been sightings of sharks around here, giving the floppers and slurpfish a run for their gills." I remark, looking at my sad pile of 2 floppers and, now, 3 small fries.

"I guess I could take these and get back to the S.S Ghost and cook these up-" My thoughts get brushed off to sea as I notice something weird up in the distance. From what I could tell, it was a wood log raft with a person lying unconscious on it.
"I'm not the only one out here?" I question to myself, directing the motorboat towards the raft.
As I get closer, I can identify the person wearing a black jacket, white buttoned up shirt, buckled shoes. He has pale grey skin, combed back hair and tattoos on his neck and arms. But the only thing that caught my attention was his hands:
"His hands are completely encased in gold?! Woah..."
Actually, now that I think about it, some of the tattoos near his wrists have touches of gold too.
"Could this be Skye's boss? I've got to rescue him, but how?" I whisper. Taking a look at my surroundings, a shark could be seen circling the raft.
"Well, let's try this." Taking a small fry, I throw it away far from the raft, praying it would lure the jaws astray. Thankfully, it's just enough to buy me time as I tread lightly on to the raft, picking him up and laying him on the back of the motorboat gently as can be.
Although I didn't take into account the shark finishing up the fish that fast.
"Oh jeez!! Not good!! Not good!!" I scream in my head, shifting the gears and speeding away as fast as possible. Unfortunately, it's not enough to shake it away.
"Alright buddy you asked for it!" I groan, turning around and pulling out a pistol. Despite 2 shots missing completely, the shark recognises the noises and quickly turns away to retreat.
"Phew, that was close. Better make my stock of fish last and stay out of the waters for now, right?" I mutter to the person, knowing full well he can't hear me. Smiling sadly, I take a slow, quiet ride back to the ship, excited to get to know this person...
When he wakes up that is...

To hit the criminals in the gut and run off with their money, making the world a bit brighter at the same time by taking down the bad guys. But how long can he actually manage alone? The Ingress Estate
Jonathon Eucole. Soldier. Scholar. Now an Initiate, the dedication without dedication, he finds himself both prisoner and master of an arcane edifice, the Ingress Estate, which can neither be escaped, nor controlled; only diverted, maintained, and pacified. This is a gothic fantasy story, set in a world in which gods and the afterlife are not only real and known, but were both established in living memory of some of the inhabitants after millennia of arcane warfare with the being who constructed the mundane reality the humans occupy. But this isn't the story of those who colonized the afterlife at the cost of their own humanity, but a somewhat more ordinary man, in somewhat extraordinary circumstances. This is also a LitRPG-lite, which means there's a system of sorts, fragments of which can be observed through Jonathon's eyes. Don't expect level-up screens, or statistics, or indeed numbers much at all, beyond those the inhabitants of the world itself apply to understanding their own reality. It pretty much doesn't matter to the story, I mention it so those who don't want to read LitRPG at all can successfully avoid it here. I don't have any particular plan here, just some ideas inherent in the genre. This is a character concept I toyed with some years ago; an old man, bright of mind but weighed down into apathy, both by his past and his responsibilities for a terrible estate that cannot be left without stewardship. Don't expect any kind of overarching plot or story, because that's really not what this is about. Also don't expect much dialogue. Or character development. Or much of anything, really, because I've planned nothing in the way of an actual book, here. Other relevant information, if you've read this far for some reason: The MC isn't super-powerful to begin with, and probably never will be. He's a veteran with some useful skills, and the insight on how to use them, so can deal with the world's ordinary threats reasonably well, but not too much beyond that. --- Currently on hiatus, as currently the story has a rather poor ratio of effort-to-personal-payoff. I may return to this once I have a clear idea of how to get the stories where I want them. I've started a more standard LitRPG using the same system. But if you like intelligence characters who cleverly min-max their classes, it probably isn't the story for you; it's the story of a rather ordinary guy who winds up in a very similar universe.
