《What Lies Beyond You | ✓》08. | Mood Swings

and I was blankly staring at the white ceiling in my room.

Everybody had days like this. Days where it felt like your body was giving up on you. Sometimes it felt like you didn't have a purpose, even though you strongly wanted to have one. Days where you couldn't explain how you were feeling even though you wanted to be understood.

For me, things were just awkward. And whenever I tried to dwell on my feelings, the realization of how much some people wouldn't mind living my bad days hit me.

I knew my mood swing was because I was getting my period soon, which sucked completely, but I couldn't fight nature and all my accumulated feelings were pouring out in form of tears. Let's face the reality, being a girl sucked. I didn't bother putting on makeup because I knew my tears were going to wipe them off, and I didn't want to look like a clown.

It was 6:42 AM and school started by 8:00 AM, so I laid down on the couch until I dozed off. When I woke up, I had thirteen minutes until school started, so I locked the door and hurried to my car.

The first bell rang almost immediately. I grabbed my bag and jacket from the passenger seat, hurrying out of my car and into the school building. I needed to go to the bathroom to wash my face, but I collided with a hard body.

It was Caelum.

"Do your eyes not work properly or something?" he barked, and I sent him a flat look in return.

Turning around to walk away, I felt his warm hands pull me back, and my heart skipped a beat, much to my dismay.

"What Caelum?" I ran a hand through my hair and almost yelled in frustration when my fingers got stuck in it. "Let's do this another time, okay?"

He released my elbow. "Is something wrong?"

Taken aback by his words, I blinked rapidly and muttered an "I'm fine" as I made my way to the bathroom. After rinsing my face, I proceeded to my first class-Calculus. The fact that I was failing Calculus, and we had a test coming up soon dampened my mood even more.

"Ms. McCready, nice of you to join us," Mr. Bob, our Calculus teacher, said as I walked into the class.

"I'm sorry," I apologized.

"Go to your seat, and do not talk." I squeezed my eyes shut to prevent myself from glaring at him as I made my way to my seat.

I received a text five minutes in, and instead of my usual vibration, Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus started blasting. The snickers and laughter from my classmates filled the once quiet classroom as I struggled to turn down the volume. I mentally facepalmed when I remembered the settings I had forgotten to change the night before.

"Can you turn that device off and bring it to my desk?" Mr. Bob narrowed his eyes, and I wanted the earth to open up and swallow me.

Sighing, I stood, ignoring the usual stares from my classmates. I dropped the phone on his desk before returning to my seat. I knew my face was hot enough to fry eggs.

My poor heart couldn't take the second-hand embarrassment.

When Calculus ended, I rushed to the front of the class to meet Mr. Bob. "Can I have my phone back, please?"

He looked up from his work with a glare. "No."

"Well, may I have my phone back, please?" I politely asked.

"No."

Geez, I didn't tell his wife to file for a divorce!

"Please sir, it won't happen again, I promise!" My fingers were crossed behind my back but he didn't need to know that.

"You committed two crimes today, you know?" I nodded. "After coming to my class late, you insult me by texting in class. I won't tolerate such behavior."

"I wasn't texting, I promise. I received a message from my calculus tutor and I wanted to check it."

Lies, lies, lies.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier?" he looked genuinely interested in what I had to say, so I lied some more.

"Uh... I thought you wouldn't care?"

"Well, I care about your calculus grades and since you want to improve, I will return your phone to you." He picked the phone from his desk and stretched it out to me.

"Thank you so much, Mr. Bob," I said, collecting it.

"Don't thank me yet." He smiled. "Read the text out."

The text was from Emery asking what was up with me. Apparently, Caelum thought she made me mad or something, but she wanted to hang out later today. I couldn't read that one to him, so I made up my own.

"It says, Daesyn, what um... time should I come over to tutor you for your Calculus test?" I winced at my lie.

I wasn't proud of myself for lying or anything, but I couldn't think of a human who hadn't bent the truth once or twice in his/her life. Even grown-ups, they lied.

I mean, Mother had told me broccoli tasted like candy when I was younger. She'd also made me believe that clowns were in charge of the ice-cream trucks. Apparently, the music was just a bait to spank little children roaming around. It was embarrassing to say that I had believed all of those lies.

"Nice." He clapped. "Who is your tutor, if I may ask?"

"Emery?"

His eyes narrowed. "Emery's not in my calculus class."

"Haha, I meant Emery's brother, Caelum?"

"Caelum Jensen?" Mr. Bob asked, and I nodded unsurely. "He's your tutor?"

"Of course!"

"That's nice, I'm going to ask him about it tomorrow," he said and I nodded.

I still didn't exactly feel guilty lying some more, because even my childhood best friend's older brother was a bloody liar. He had made Isa and I believe our butts would fall off if we ever did cut a strand of our hairs. I couldn't believe we actually listened to him when he'd told us to put all of our savings in a hole for good luck.

"I'll be going now Mr. Bob, thank you."

Sighing, I made my way to Government. It was the most boring class in history, and the fact that our teacher, Mrs. Garcia, talked like a slug didn't help matters.
