《Since You Been Gone》Chapter 17

Tris P.O.V.
I take a brisk look in my mirror and smooth all the imaginary wrinkles on the pink and white striped material of my skirt away. A pearl necklace hangs around my neck under a white shawl that is layered over a soft pink top. I have on lacy white heals and my hair frames my face in blonde ringlets. If it isn't obvious, Christina picked out my outfit. She always knows what looks perfect for every occasion.
I hear a knock on my door and I assume it is Tobias. I walk to the door and take a deep breath before opening it. He was supposed to come over half an hour before Mrs. Patterson was supposed to. She is coming over today to access our lifestyle before she could allow Lucas to enroll in daycare. Despite not making much sense to me-why do you need to know how many bedrooms a child's home has to decide which level class he belongs in?-she wants to make sure he has a stable living environment. She also decided today would be a good time to meet the father.
"Hey, come in," I say when I open the door. He smiles before walking through the door. He has on pressed khaki pants and soft blue dress shirt that accompany his icy blue eyes perfectly. His dark hair is combed neatly. I return the smile before walking into the kitchen. "Coffee?" I ask. He nods.
"So, are we supposed to act like a happy couple or what?" Tobias asks. I shrug as I put a filter into the coffee pot with a dark, powdery substance. Within a few seconds the water, a stream of dark liquid is leaking out of the coffee maker and into the pot.

"She knows that we aren't together anymore. She does think, though, that we are on good terms with one another so we have to act like friends, I guess," he nods and takes a seat at the bar stool. The smell of coffee moves through the kitchen in quick waves likes it is urgent for its scent to be known by anyone who enters.
"I thought we were on good terms," he says. I nod and bite the inside of my cheek. I retrieve sugar and two coffee cups from the cabinet and creamer from the refrigerator.
"We are. She just got that impression when we weren't exactly. . . Friendly with each other. It was before Lucas knew the truth," I say. He nods. We are quiet for a few more minutes, the only noise is the stream of the coffee. When it stops, I pull the pot off the platform and pour the cups three quarters of the way full. I set one in front of him and he puts in a scoop of sugar and pours some of the milk into the cup as well.
"So, where is Lucas? If he can't be here during the assessment, is someone watching him?" Tobias asks. I nod and pour two scoops of sugar and some of the creamer into my cup before taking a sip. I put the sugar and creamer but where they came from, assuming we won't be needing them again.
"Christina came and got him really early this morning. She figured he would be less likely to make a mess if he wasn't up as early. She also decided she would pick out my outfit," I quickly explain, making sure to motion down at clothes on my body. He nods and takes a sip of his coffee. We both go into silence after that, just sipping on our coffee. In fact, we are silent until we have both finished our coffee Mrs. Patterson has arrived.

"Mrs. Patterson, it is so nice to see you," I say as I open the door. She takes my hand in hers and gives it a firm shake before releasing. She also does the same to Tobias, who is standing right behind me.
"Hello, Mr. Eaton. It is so nice to me you," she says, taking a look at her paper to make sure she is using the right name. Tobias gives her a gentle smile and bows his head a little.
"It is really nice to meet you as well, Mrs. Patterson," he says. She smiles and looks down at her papers. She pulls a pen out of her bag and scribbles something down before looking back up at Tobias, her eyebrows elevated.
"Mr. Eaton, I do feel like I have seen you before although the name Tobias Eaton does not ring a bell. If you don't mind, could you jog my memory?" she asks. I bite the inside of my lip. I know exactly what she is talking about, and, judging by the look on his face, Tobias does too. His eyes are asking me for approval, asking me if it would be okay to share you Lucas's father is. I give him a subtle nod and his eyes move to Mrs. Patterson
"Um, Mrs. Patterson, you probably know me as Four. I am the quarterback for Northern Illinois. Tobias is just my legal name that I use for significant documents and things of the such," he explains in a simple manor. Mrs. Patterson nods and scribbles down a long note. Tobias and I both give each other a nervous look.
"Well, that is very interesting. Lucas must feel very special with his mother being a famous author and his father being a star quarterback," she says when she looks back up from her papers. She gives us a both a warm smile and nods towards the rest of the house, a new spunk apparent in her attitude. "So, how about we continue will the assessment," she suggests. I nod.
"That sounds wonderful," I say. Tobias and I proceed to lead her into the house, but not without him giving my hand a comforting squeeze.
What do you think? Was Mrs. Patterson surprised or what? The picture is of what Tris is wearing. (depending that I can get it work. It is acting weird...) I did make an Instagram account so be sure to follow me! My name is Finnchellove.Wattpad. Bad editing once again because I was trying to be quick... Comments and votes please!

Shadow under Plato
King’s College has a reputation. To Leo, the sharp but cynical rebel, it is a place where the people he cares about are sentenced to a fate worse than death—to live the rest of their days on the surface of a dying Earth. To Morgan, the bright and strict overachiever, it is a vault in which she may find her dreams. And for the brightest six students of King’s College, even greater opportunities reside in the legendary Class Euripides; a class which she will fight for a seat at with all her wits and will. And to Lumia, the newly Ascended girl whose smile never fades, King’s College is a terrifying puzzle just like everything else in the floating city of Plato, the last bastion of humanity. As the class of 311 commences a grueling year of study and elaborately devious tests, none of the bright-eyed students could have anticipated the weight of expectation laid upon their shoulders. After all, a student’s hopes and dreams mean little in the fight against an ever-collapsing climate. For the Educators of King’s College offer only one lesson to their future students, to the future of a dying world: Burn bright.
