《✓ I Chose Dauntless ↠ Eric Coulter | Divergent | #Wattys2015》Chapter 9

Just get through initiation then you can avoid Eric.
Yeah, that's going to be a bit hard with him as your instructor.
Fucking perfect.
"Hi," Uriah said, coming up to me. I gave a forced smiling then went back to my food. Uriah seemed to notice the insincerity in it.
"Hey, what's wrong little chick?" he asked, using my new nickname. I didn't understand the chick part honestly.
"Just guy trouble."
He gave an 'ah' look. "Any way that I can help?"
I shrugged. "Probably not. To make matters worse, I've been sick all morning," I said, sighing and rubbing my stomach. I knew that the possibility of being pregnant was great. If they found out I was pregnant, they would probably kick me out and make me factionless.
Actually, now that I think about it, I could keep Eric away from his son or daughter and have freedom from factions. Not a luxurious life but it would be better for my unborn child.
Wait, what the hell? I don't even know if I'm pregnant.
"Could you take me to the infirmary?" I asked Uriah. He nodded, draping his arm around me and leading me to the infirmary.
My stomach clenched in knots, probably from the possibility of being pregnant or morning sickness. Maybe both.
There was a few people beaten up on cots with a young woman milling around. She came over when she noticed us. "How may I help you?" she asked. I placed a hand on my stomach.
"I think I need a, uh, blood test." She looked bewildered for a moment before it dawned on her.
"R-right this way, Miss..."
"Gabriela," I filled in for her. She nodded, quickly laying me down and taking my blood. Uriah sat down beside me, keeping a respectable distance so you knew we were friends. How sweet.

About fifteen minutes later, the doctor returned.
"Um, congratulations, future momma," she said happily.
I burst into tears. Obviously I didn't share the same emotion as her on this.
"I won't be able to finish initiation, will I?" I asked after calming down a bit.
"No, I'm afraid not. This isn't the first time an initiate has gotten pregnant, though. They allow you to stay, until after the baby then you'll go through the training you missed."
I sighed. "Could I just leave?"
The doctor looked beyond shocked yet I couldn't blame her. No one wants to be factionless.
"I-I guess you could but why?"
"I don't want the father in his or her life," I bluntly said. She nodded.
"Well, don't make a hasty decision. But if that's really what you want, you can. None of us will stop you." I nodded, standing up.
Uriah was silent as I walked back to my room. "Hey, are you okay?" I asked when we reached the room. He chuckled humorlessly.
"Shouldn't I be asking you that?" I laughed.
"I'm good, Uriah. I'll manage." He nodded, giving me a smile before leaving.
I sighed, laying down on my cot. I placed a hand on my stomach, thinking of whether I should tell Eric or not.
'No,' I scolded myself. He was cheating on me. He doesn't deserve fatherhood.
A nauseating feeling came over me, causing me to run to the toilet. I dry-heaved for a good ten minutes until I felt a hand on my back.
"Shush, it's going to be okay." I knew that voice anywhere.
When I recovered a bit, I turned and glared at the voice. "What the fuck do you want, Eric?" I snarled like a feral cat. Ignoring me, he placed a hand on my abdomen.

"They told all of the Dauntless leaders about your condition. I know, Gabriela." I squeezed my eyes shut, trying not to cry. I didn't want him to know. I'm so stupid.
"I made a mistake, Gabriela. Can you forgive me?" I shook my head, clenching my eyes tighter. "Please?" His voice cracked at the end.
"Eric, you fucked Molly. You already knew I could be carrying your baby soon. Still you went and did that." I didn't say that bitterly; I did it softly. It had more of an impact.
"Please let me be here for you and our baby, Gabriela." He placed his palm on my cheek.
"Okay but just for the baby." He looked disappointed but nodded.
Just for the baby. Remember that, Gabriela.
