《Finding Emma》Chapter 7

After a long day of training with Nita, I come back to the nursery a little later than I was expecting. It's dinner time now, and people are heading to the cafeteria.

-

-

I walk up to the door and knock on it. The nice blonde woman opens the door.

-

-

"Emma!" She calls. The little girl toddles towards the door. The second she looks up and sees me, her eyes light up. She breaks into a sort of toddle-run, and hugs my legs.

-

-

"Dada," she says, her arms squeezing my legs.

-

-

"I'm not your dad, Emma," I repeat. "I'm just taking care of you. Just call me Four, okay?"

-

-

She looks up at me. "Four," she repeats.

-

-

"That's right," I reply, lifting her up.

-

-

"They ran a few more tests on her today," the woman explains to me. "Just for the Bureau to understand more of her genetic code. She's about twenty months old; that's one thing we discovered."

-

-

Year and a half. That's what I was guessing.

-

-

"Let's go get some dinner, okay?" I ask Emma. She nods and grabs my hand.

-

-

We walk into the cafeteria together, Emma looking at all the people and then hiding behind my legs nervously.

-

-

"Tris isn't with us right now because she's still working with David," I say to Emma, picking her up. "So, we're eating dinner just the two of us tonight."

-

-

Emma eyes the large mass of people in the cafeteria. She hugs onto me shyly.

-

-

I sit down next to a group of people I don't know, setting Emma next to me. Emma eyes the other people and then looks up at me. Emma's sort of a shy girl, that's what I've discovered in the past two days. She usually only wants me, but she can also be independent at the same time. She wants to eat her food by herself. I try to spoon her some mac and cheese, but she refuses to eat it until she has possession of the spoon and feeds the food to herself.

I watch her as she tries to feed herself, giving up on the spoon and using her hands. She mushes the mac and cheese into her face. I laugh, watching her.

"Watch out because..." I growl. "The tickle monster is here!"

-

-

I throw her in the air and she giggles. I lie her on the bed and start tickling her all over, and she is in a fit of giggles. She reaches her hands up at me, swatting them. I smile and lift her back up.

-

-

"Rawr!" She yells, lifting her hands up.

-

-

"Are you the monster now?" I ask her. She nods at me, grinning, and I lift my hands up. "Oh no!" I exclaim. "Somebody help me!"

-

-

Emma jumps up onto my chest and grabs onto me, roaring and growling. I laugh and hold her, pretending to be slain.

-

-

"That's enough," someone says on the top bunk.

-

-

I stop. Emma giggles at me, still pretending to be a monster, but I put my finger up to her. She stops. "What?" I ask.

-

-

Tris hops down from the bed and crosses her arms. "I've been here for the past ten minutes, and you don't even notice I came in," she says angrily.

-

-

"Jeez," I say, looking at Emma. "Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed today." She looks up at me, confused.

-

-

My comment doesn't help the situation. Tris' face contorts into anger. "I haven't seen you all day, and when I come back it's like I'm not even here," she spits at me.

-

-

"Maybe that's because you've been with David so much," I reply. "Say hi to David for me, won't you?"

She lets out an exasperated sigh at my sarcastic comment. "I've been working the whole time! What have you been doing? Bonding with this little girl."

-

-

"I've been doing my job here too, you know," I reply as Emma crawls into my lap. I wrap my arms around her and she cuddles up close to me. Tris watches this and she looks even more upset. "The only way this little girl can survive is if I help take care of her. That's what my job is. Just because it's not as 'important' as yours doesn't make it a job."

-

-

"You're with her the whole day!" Tris exclaims. "When I'm not here, you're with her. When I'm here, you don't even notice me. You're with her."

-

-

"I could say the same thing for you and David," I sneer. "David always wants you, David always needs you."

-

-

"You love her more than me," Tris exclaims. "You don't even spend time with me anymore."

-

-

"That's not true," I reply to her. "Emma will be gone in a couple of weeks. This is my job right now, Tris. Guess what. Maybe this time someone else needs me. And you're going to have to deal with that."

-

-

Tris' face contorts, and she looks extremely upset. She looks like she might punch someone, or burst into tears. She storms out of the room, slamming the door.

-

-

Emma looks up at me, shocked. "Tis?" She asks me.

-

-

"Tris isn't happy with me right now," I explain to her. "But that's okay, Emma. You and I can still spend time together."
