《Finding Emma》Chapter 1

"So how exactly does this work?" I ask her, straightening out my red suit. Nita looks out of the small window of the building, and then turns back to me.

-

-

"I am going to go off on my own. So will you," she says. "You need to look for any children that are by themselves. Take them into this building and the guards will take the children to secure them to enter the Bureau."

-

-

"It's that easy?" I ask. She nods.

-

-

"I have to go," she says, walking out of the building, into the open. "I'll meet you back here in about an hour."

-

-

"Alright," I say, walking out of the awning as well. I look around, and all I can see are tents in the distance. I start to jog out towards them.

-

-

I finally arrive, panting, at the tents. I hear distant yells. Children run to and from the tents, soldiers chasing after them.

-

-

I don't entirely agree with the mission plan, but I know that these children will be taken to a place where they can thrive best. Even if they do not know it.

-

-

I look around and walk through the tents. No children are around, or adults. I continue north. I do hear yelling in the distance, but it sounds like someone older.

-

-

As I'm scrounging through an empty tent with metal bowls scattered across the ground, I hear high-pitched shrieks. They sound like they are coming from a small child. I run out of the tent and start sprinting towards the sound.

-

-

I arrive at a yellow-colored tent, damaged from the acid rain. The screaming is louder and more defined now. As I walk into the tent, first thing I notice is a soldier slumped over on the ground, holding a gun. A knife is lodged in his throat. The high-pitched screams become louder as I turn the corner of the hallway.

Two adults lie on the ground, a pool of blood surrounding them. One of them, a woman, has her eyes open, her hair drenched in her own blood. The man lies curled up next to her, a wound in his abdomen. They are young; most likely no older than my age. Sitting next to the woman is a little girl, screeching for her mother, her eyes red with tears. Her blonde hair is full of dirt and her abdomen is swollen; malnourished. She could be about a year or two old. Her screams are desperate.

-

-

A soldier must have come here and tried to take the girl. The parents must have been shot by him, but not before one of them killed the soldier.

-

-

"Shh," I say, walking up to her. She looks up at me, eyes wide. I lean down and carefully pick her up. She shakes in my arms, and I rub her tiny back. She coughs and I feel her forehead. It is warm.

-

-

"It'll be okay," I whisper quietly, even though I know it won't. However, since she is so young, she may not remember this gruesome event.

-

-

I walk out of the tent with her, carefully stepping over her parents' bodies. She buries her face into my shoulder and sobs.

-

-

I walk all the way back to the building, where I meet Nita. She's holding the hand of a boy who looks about five or six years old.

-

-

"Nita, who should I give her to?" I ask, walking up to her. The little boy looks up at me fearfully.

-

-

"A soldier is coming right now. Where'd you find her?" Nita asks, looking at the little girl whose face is pressed tightly against my shoulder. The little girl has finally quieted down.

-

"A soldier tried killing her parents. She was the only survivor. I found her in a tent, because of her screams," I explain.

-

-

"Perfect," Nita says.

-

-

"Why did the soldier kill her parents? I thought we were supposed to only take abandoned children, not ones with parents," I say. The little girl coughs into my shoulder.

-

-

"Erm," Nita starts. "Sometimes the soldiers will shoot the parents if the children are young enough to start a new life at the Bureau. I'm not really sure, I just listen to orders. I advise that you do that, too."

-

-

Anger boils in my stomach. Killing parents? Was she lying to me the whole time?

-

-

Before I can accuse her of lying, a soldier walks up. "Found some children?" She asks. "I'll take them from here. We need to clean them up."

-

-

Nita gently pushes the young boy towards the soldier, telling him to follow her. The soldier walks up to me and I hand her the little girl.

-

-

The little girl's hazel eyes widen and she starts to cry. "No!" She screams, writhing in the soldier's arms. She looks at me, fearfully.

-

-

"Shh," the soldier says roughly, heading deeper inside the building. They disappear behind the door of the ship, which Christina walks out of right after.

-

-

"Hi," she says, walking up to me. "Are you on this mission too?"

-

-

I nod. "Although I don't think it's exactly what we thought it was," I murmur.

-

-

"Why?" She asks.

-

-

"Four, we need to go get some more children," Nita insists. "C'mon, let's get to it."

-

-

I nod and unsling my gun from across my shoulder. "I'm ready," I say.

-

-

All of the sudden, I see the door of the ship open and a soldier comes running up to me. "She won't stop crying," he huffs.

-

-

"She will only cooperate if you're in the room. You need to come with me, and we need to cleanse her before she comes back to the Bureau."

-

-

I look at Nita, and she nods at me. "Let's go," she says. "Christina, you too."

-

-

I nod and we follow the soldier.
