"If it isn't the legendary (N/n)." He spoke your name slowly, a grin forming on his face. "Now this is a conqueror who knows what they're doing."
You growled at him, a deep roar escaping your throat, "I don't go by that anymore-" Your hand reached behind you to whip out your (w/c) in the event of more combat, "and it's (Y/n) now..."
'He didn't look like a fighter-'
"Very well, (Y/n), but your legacy will still live on." He threw a fist in the air, triumphant at praising your past crimes, and pronouncing your name in an uninterested manner, "But where are my manners little (m/s)... My name is Dr. Starline." He held out a hand, throwing it to the side and turning it into a bow as he continued to stand in front of the throne. "What brings the magnificent (Y/n) (N/n) aboard my ship? AND Don't bother lying, I know you were released by the Freedom Fighters. Let me guess..."
He pursed his lips (bill?) together and began to mock the heroes, "Goody-goody heroes promised you your freedom in order for your help?"
Still keeping your body on edge, and your silence was enough of an answer to him.
"That's too bad... A supervillain like yourself should be on our side! Conquering the world! You were so close last time weren't you? Where did that fire and spirit go?!"
'Geez-' This guy was an egotist for other people. The platypus, or Dr.Starline, began to make their way towards you. Meanwhile, badniks were swarming every wall in the control room. You couldn't let them catch you.
"I'm fighting for the world others want to live in- You seriously think I'd live in a world full of infection and steel?" You barked back. "Even if I was part of, whatever this is, I'd bail just like I did on Wolf. This isn't right."

Your memory flashed back, of you jumping out of the airship and escaping from Wolf... Blinking brought yourself back to the real world.
"But the enemy of my enemy should be my friend. I won't fight you, come on Miss (Y/n) (N/n), don't you see it?" Starline stepped forwards, being only slightly taller than you. "All you need to do is join me. We'll take over this operation a-"
"-and betray Eggman? I thought he was your hero."
Dr.Starline tilted his head, "So, you WERE eavesdropping on my little conversation. You know it's rude to- spy on people." He began circling you, the robots also taking a step closer.
"Ah (Y/n), tsk tsk tsk, you may be right, but as you've heard, I don't believe Eggman has a plan to control this metal virus." He spoke slowly, making a full circle before standing back in front of the throne... "And besides, don't- these intrigue you?" He took a step to the side, holding out his gloved hand to gesture to all the chaos emeralds in the stone sculpture.
His hand- it was the one with the special stone in it... You decided against questioning him about it for now- Your options raced through your mind... Be a double agent for the Freedom Fighters? Whatever your choice was, you would stay on the heroes' side. Like you said, who would want to be all powerful but live in a metallic, hellish wasteland.
Yet, you pretended to play along with his little game to give your data downloader more time.
"If you gain control, can you stop the virus?"
Starline nodded again, putting a hand behind his back and giving a small box of respect, "If that is what needs to be done, WE shall do it."
'We, hmm?...'
Your gaze shifted to the emeralds in the throne. "You have them all, all the chaos emeralds?"

Dr.Starline nodded, offering his hand to take you to them. That was actually rather unexpected- but even as a villain I suppose one can still be a gentleman. His other hand shooed away the robots. "Well of course, their energy seems to ward off the infected."
His other hand reached for yours, holding both and looking into your eyes. "That is why we are safe up here."
You were extremely uncomfortable, but also humbled at his respectful treatment of his, technically enemy, but perhaps he did envy your power as a previous warlord.
Hesitantly thinking about his reasoning, you shook your head and whipped your hands back. Dr.Starline was still smiling at his proposition. You two were standing at the base of the throne, and you looked at the emeralds again, their power was definitely enticing...
A soft ping rang in your ears. The data drive was done... Trying to look as casual and conflicted as you could, pretending to consider your offer, you made your way back to the control panel and rested your palms on the top of the desk.
Starline stood behind you, waiting for your response.
Sliding a hand over the control panel, you eventually brought it to your data drive, ejecting it and sliding it up your sleeve to hide it from the Dr.
Now standing and looking out the window, you crossed your arms. The sun began to crest the deep blue ocean horizon, lighting up a bright glimmer across the sea. You sighed, raising a hand to your ear piece, and tried to contact Olive. Dr.Starline might of be able to hear you, but you mended your story anyway.
"This is (Y/n), come in SS Endurance... Olive?" You tried to get in contact. At first it was cracked white noise, but eventually she got a message through.
"Olive here, everything ok (Y/n)?"
"Can you see the Faceship?"
Olive paused... "Yeah, I can. Do you need a pick up?"
Starline lifted an eyebrow in confusion, adjusting his small glasses and bringing them forwards. Was this how you were dismissing yourself from the Freedom Fighter's side or something?
"Yeah." You turned around to face Starline, pretending to talk into the microphone while instead you just gave your location to Olive. You chuckled to yourself and looked Starline dead in the eye across the room as engines began to rise up behind you... "Say GOODBYE!"
You jumped backwards as a violent gust of wind broke the glass behind you. The SS Endurance was facing the glass, allowing you to escape with it as it descended back to the ground. In the coolest way possible, you jumped out, Starline calling out behind you as you jumped. It gave you another flashback to when Wolf tried to jump out after you-
....
(( I just played Halo Infinite's campaign and you LITERALLY Do the exact same thing I wrote in this chapter so I used the screenshot hahhaAHHAA ))
The violent wind blowing past your face woke you up, and focused up on the ship that peeled in front of you. The hangar door was open, and you fell right in, hitting the back wall with an 'ouf!'
The bay door snapped shut and the Endurance TOOK OFF, escaping the Faceship's defensive range. You stumbled back up, jumping to Olive's cabin to find her laughing hysterically.
"AHAHAH! That was the most amazing thing to ever happen to me!" She threw the throttles up even more, the forces crushing you to your seat.
Eventually, your velocity matched with the sudden inertia of the ship, and were able to sit up straight, holding out the small data drive next to Olive just pulsating a glow of stocked information. "And I've got the drive, let's get back."
Want a lil' teaser?? We'll be meeting the edgy hot sauce hair lord soon >:)

Jackal Among Snakes: GameLit Fantasy Progression
The royal bastard of House Vasquer, Argrave, has changed after his stay studying magic at the Tower of the Gray Owl. The sickly man's awkward posture and cruel behavior have been replaced with a neat dignity and acerbic wit. His listless life has found a path of undeniable purpose. Most come away thinking he seems to know too many details about too much. Few can claim to know his motives or his goals. Behind the scenes, though, the primary contributor for an open-world RPG's wiki battles existential dread and things far beyond his ken as he struggles to adapt to a grim, gothic fantasy world that he had the misfortune to claim as his favorite game. This is his tale. #####What to expect from this story##### This piece is a high-fantasy style story, featuring many of the species and surroundings one might expect to find in such a world. The cultures are original and well-developed, with the primary setting being a European-style feudal society. Warfare, fell beasts, and natural disasters are commonplace in Berendar, and take the center of many plots. The protagonist is a smooth-talker, but the world does not exist for him; he must struggle to gain power. Expect daily releases until we catch up to my backlog.

This was my entry for National Novel Writing Month, because why only write one series at a time? The more the merrier! (meanwhile, my keyboard bursts into flames...) I'm also the writer of The Last Science, an ongoing low-fantasy/speculative sci-fi series. If you're familiar with that, you know what to expect here: lots of character-focused drama and dialogue, not a whole lot of traditional action. However, I'm writing a bit differently than usual here, and in a very different structure, so there should be some surprises for returning readers. I hope you enjoy it! [Discord] — for those of you who want to hang out and chat. Cover art (fullsize): Path of Revelation, by taenaron (Tobias Roetsch), modified by Etzoli. Normally I like to do my own cover art from scratch, but I was in a rush for the contest. Might be replaced down the line if I get time.
