《Hidden Riches》Chapter 5

"Hurry up, dumbass! I don't have all day! Pancakes! Come get your free pancakes!"

A long line had formed in front of a stand in the cafeteria. It was a pancake stand. A lady was behind the stand, expertly flipping pancakes with one hand.

"Would you like some pancakes, Bunny?" Logan asked me.

"Yes." I said, wiping away my drool.

"Alright then, I'm going to pick us a table. Find me when you're done." He kissed my hand, then left me in the line.

I waited. The pancakes smelled so delicious and I was ready to have some.

The line got smaller and smaller, but slower and slower.

After ten minutes, I reached the stand. The woman behind it had long purple hair and green eyes. She was scowling. I couldn't help but assume that was the look she always wore.

"What do you want?" She sighed. "We have blueberry pancakes, chocolate chip, buttermilk-"

"Buttermilk, please." I said, eyeing the stacks of pancakes.

She filled a plate with 5 pancakes. I noticed she had a name tag on her apron. It read 'Violet'.

"Any toppings?" She asked with even less enthusiasm than before.

"Yes. Rainbow sprinkles, whipped cream and chocolate syrup."

"Jesus Christ, hurry it up!" The man behind me yelled. "Come on, how long does to take to do a simple order?!"

The woman's face immediately twisted into anger. "Oh yeah? Listen here, buddy." She grabbed a fist full of his hair. She grabbed his head and pushed it down, so it was at least two inches above the heat plate.

I backed up a little, afraid she would do it to me too.

"Stop!" The man screamed. "I'm sorry, okay?! Please don't burn off my hair line!"

"I've been making these pancakes all day and it's exhausting! I don't need you sass so shut up and deal with it!" She pushed him back. He landed on his butt on the ground. He quickly got up and ran out of the cafeteria in fear.

"Asshole," she said, finishing up my order.

"Thank you," I said once she gave me my plate.

"Finally, someone says it." She said, rolling her eyes.

I walked around looking for Logan. He waved to me and I sat down with him.

"I see that Violet got into another fight." He chuckled.

"That happens often?"

"Yes, all the time. Violet is a very strong girl and she doesn't take disrespect lightly. That guy must've been a transfer if he hadn't known that by now."

I took a bite of my pancakes. They were so delicious. Logan had hamburgers and fries it looked so good too. Why am I so hungry?

I realized once I finished eating that our table was being stared at. Noah was sitting at a table with other basketball players and a few girls. They were glaring at me. I quickly looked away.

"Are those your friends?" I asked Logan.

"I guess you could say that." he said, tossing a fry into his mouth.

"Why aren't you sitting with them then?"

"Because I'd rather sit with you, Bunny." He gave me another one of his charming smiles.

He set his hand on top of my head. "Don't question why I'm here with you anymore, okay? I want to be with you. I'm not forcing myself at all."

"Okay..."I said, looking down at my empty plate.

He's so nice to me. Too nice.

....

After school, I waited in front my locker for Logan.

"Stupid whore! Leave me alone!" I looked down the hall. Violet was yelling at a girl in a cheerleading uniform. The cheerleader looked as if she was about to pee herself. Her face was soaked with tears. "Please, my brother he-"

"Get out of here, Kylee. We'll talk later." Violet tried to whisper. "We're causing a scene."

The cheerleader loudly sobbed and quickly went down the hall, crying loudly.

Violet sighed then continued down the hall. She realized I was watching her and looked up at me.

I quickly looked away.

She began to walk toward me. I was thinking about running, but my feet wouldn't move.

"Hey, you're that transfer student right?"

I nodded.

"You know school is over now. You can go home."

"I know." I said. "I'm waiting for someone."

"You made friends on your first day? Awesome."

"No, he's already my-" Is Logan my friend? I mean, he did give me somewhere to stay and all but is he my friend?

"You're what?"

"Never mind." I said and looked down at my feet.

"I could drive you home if you want," she said. "My car is right outside."

"No, thank you. I already have a ride."

"Where is it then?"

I could hear the crickets in my head.

The door to the gym opened. Logan came out. He was in a basketball jersey and long basketball shorts. "Sorry to keep you waiting, Bunny."

"I-its fine." I said, coming toward him.

"No, it not fine." Violet said. "She's been waiting out here for 20 minutes."

"What?!" Logan and I both said.

It's only been five. Right?

"You better come on time, Python. I was about to take her home." Violet poked his chest with her finger.

"Violet," Logan placed his hand on his head. "Stop joking around. Bunny, my game has been scheduled a little earlier today because of the rain. Violet, could you take her home?"

"Sure." She shrugged. "Where does she live?"

"With me." Logan said, digging into his pocket. He pulled out a key and placed it in my hand. "That is yours from now on. Don't lose it."

"Logan!" Noah called from the gym. "Come on! Practice is about to start!"

"Can't I watch you practice?" I said. I was scared to go home with Violet. I didn't want her to yell at me like she did that poor cheerleader.

"Maybe some other time, Bunny." He said, walking toward the gym. "I'll see you at home." The gym door closed behind him.

I just stood there, motionless.

"Let's go...Bunny is it? That's a weird ass name."

"It's not my name. My name is Hannah."

"Okay Hannah. Let's get you home."

We left the school and got in her car. She turned the radio up to loud rock music. It hurt my ears. She drove me to the house.

"Thank you," I said and got out the car. I was surprised when she got out too.

"Violet!"

"Come on, let's go inside." She said, walking up the steps.

"Wait!" I ran after her. "You're going inside too?"

"Well yeah. I gotta piss."

I moved past her and unlocked the door.

She darted inside and sat on the couch. "Ahhh..." she said, laying down and spreading her legs.

"You said you had to pee!"

"Well, I lied. Logan is living lavish! I can't believe you two live here. How come you live with him anyway? Are you like a cousin or something?"

"I guess you could say that," I slipped off my backpack and my shoes. I sat on the couch with her.

The rain quickly started so Violet stayed. We watched tv and ate sandwiches. She told me she was a senior at Quil College. She also told me she had a lot of classes with Logan. I guess you could say they were "friends".

I lied and told her I transferred because I could get a better job here to afford college.

"That's pretty smart of you, Hannah. Not to burst your bubble, but not a lot of places hire around here."

"Really?"

"Yeah. Good luck finding a job though. I believe in you."

Once the rain stopped, Violet went home. I waved goodbye to her. She waved back and drove off.

She isn't that scary after all.

I wonder... is Violet my friend?
