《Into the Shadows》Chapter 25: The Stop

I had a dark and dreamless sleep that night. I was thankful for the rest because when I woke up I was refreshed, though I was also still a bit tired. I wanted to go back to sleep, but my human alarm clock wouldn't allow that.

"Good Morning, Paris!" I heard shouted in a horrible, incorrectly quoted Robin Williams impression.

"Tommy, shut up!" I heard Laura groan and throw a pillow at him.

"Train leaves at three this afternoon. It's 9:00. Pack up and leave your stuff here, my mom will meet us at Gare du Nord at two, but until then, you're going to see the city!"

"What?" Laura didn't want to get up. I think after I went to sleep she might have gotten a little wine drunk with her mom's friends.

"Wait, really?" I sat up with a smile, "Are we really going to see sights and stuff?"

My eyes lit up like the tower had last night. I had dreamed of visiting Paris since I started taking French class in high school.

"We're meeting Nathaniel at Place Jacques Rueff at 10:15."

"Natty?" Laura perked up immediately. I'd guess he was another pierced up, tattoos, and dyed haired beau of hers.

"Who?" I wanted to know. It would definitely be an interesting answer and would probably turn Laura into a blushy pink mess.

"He's a friend of mine from school." Thomas said, leaning on the door frame, "He speaks English so he became a part time tour guide and said since he isn't working today he would give us a tour. I'm not telling you what we're going to get to see though. We'll be with him for about two hours. Then we'll get lunch and do one last stop. It's a little surprise of mine. We can't see Versailles because you're only here for a few hours today, but that just means you have to come and see me again so I can take you to Versailles."

"Us!" Laura yelled, "She's my friend too. We'll take her, not just you."

Like the child he is, Thomas stuck out his tongue and mimicked her voice before retreating into the hallway and slamming the door shut when Laura picked up a book from her nightstand to throw at him.

"White flag!" Thomas yelled through the door, "Get ready, we're leaving at 10!"

I heard his foot steps retreat down the hallway and I looked to Laura and we started laughing.

I was giddy as I imagined all the things we were going to be doing today. I wanted to wear a semi-nice outfit. Something just coordinated enough to not look like a slob in the pictures I would be snapping all day.

After ten wasted minutes I settled on a pair of black ripped jeans, a t-shirt, and some sneakers. I would tie a sweatshirt around my waist just in case.

"What are you wearing?!" Laura demanded when she came out of the bathroom.

"Something comfortable and functional."

"No!" she pouted, "We have to look great so I can take pictures of us acting like tourists but not looking like them!"

"I am a tourist currently." I reminded her.

"Okay, point taken, but still!" she turned around and threw open her closet, "You can still wear the sneakers because we'll be running around, but wear this and this!"

She threw a pair of jeans and a white shirt at me.

"Laur-"

"And this!" she threw a pale purple tank top at me.

"Really?"

"Wear it or I'll put it on you myself. You remember how much I love playing dress up."

"Okay..." I felt myself get a bit pale and changed in the bathroom.

The jeans were a bit too big, but a thick black belt with a golden buckle fixed that. The button up was suffocating me because I was over heating, so Laura undid the top three buttons, exposing the tank top beneath and it's lacy top edge. When my complaints continued, Laura rolled the sleeves up to my elbows. I tried to help but she bat my hand away saying something about me doing it wrong.

"Wow! You look great!" Laura's eyes got all sparkly as she wrapped the little buttercup yellow triangle scarf around my neck and tied it tight like a choker. She put pink flower earrings on my ears and a rosary bracelet around the wrist sans burn.

"Thanks, Laura, I-"

"Don't thank me yet, I'm not done yet!" she pushed me down into the chair of her vanity and rifled through my bag to find my makeup bag.

She used my concealer and a bit of powder, but the rest was all her stuff. She used a very light coral blush to contour my cheeks very slightly with a subtle touch of highlighter on my cheeks. A darker pink blush that matched the earrings nearly perfectly cut the crease of my eyelids leaving yellow and a bit of sparkles on my lid. She used brown eyeliner to subtly outline my eyes and made my eyelashes as big as she could without fake lashes or a curler. She let my hair fall how it was, but brushed it with a wetted brush to help keep it under control. She finished with a very soft pink on my lips.

I felt like her little doll, but I also felt bad for Molly. We used to do this to her all the time when we were young. I understand why she used to fun to Mom crying now. I wished I could run and hide behind my mom right now.

"Mom!" she yelled yanking me out of her room behind her and into the kitchen, "look!"

She pushed me in front of her, showing my off like her first grade macaroni art.

"Oh, Amelia! Tu es si belle!" Mrs. Andrews hugged me.

"Merci," I laughed with a little curtsy when she let me go and she clapped a bit with a smile on her face.

Laura ran off to finish getting ready. She promised to put my dirty clothes and my makeup back in my suitcase. I had already packed my everyday bag with my phone, charger, a book for the train, wallet, and Sony Cyber-shot. I hadn't used it since we were being touristy in London when we first arrived, but I was glad to be able to take some more pictures of my adventure.

Sam, Colby, Corey, Jake, and Thomas sat around the table in the kitchen and then I saw someone else coming from behind the kitchen counter with a plate piled high with crepes.

"Mr. Andrews!" I gave him a tight hug as soon as he put the crepes down.

"Amelia! It's so good to see you, kid! How's your mom?"

"Same as always, being super mom to 5 kids and working full time." I smiled.

"I don't know how she does it. BBM at it again!"

"She's a tough lady." I laughed.

"Sit, eat, let's talk a bit before you kids head out. The Mrs. and I will meet you, kids, with your bags for lunch before you catch the train."

Breakfast was nice. I thought about mentioning some of the demon stuff to Mr. Andrews, but decided not to because Mrs. Andrews used to have a strict rule about keeping that kind of talk away from the table. I remember her scolding Laura and Molly once a few years ago when we went to visit them before they moved to France.

At 10:02 Thomas looked at his phone and jumped out of his chair.

"We gotta go, we're gonna be late!" he ran to his room to get his wallet and shoes, patting his dad on the shoulder and kissing his mom on the cheek as he went by. Laura hugged her dad and gave her mom a kiss too and lead the rest of us out of the apartment once we had all our stuff.

"Thomas will meet us downstairs in a minute. We'll have to run to be there for Natty on time."

"Take the car!" Mr. Andrews called from the kitchen, "Have Mr. Drummond drop you off."

"Thanks dad, tell Thomas we'll pick him up out front!" Laura called and we headed down to the parking garage beneath the building.

A SUV was sitting in one of the spots of the parking garage with an older man sitting in a chair beside it with a newspaper.

"Bonne Journée, Monsieur Drummond!" Laura said, "Mon père a dit de prendre la voiture. Pouvez-vous nous emmener à la place Jaques-Rueff?"

"Oui, Mademoiselle." He stood and pulled the keys from his pocket and walked around to the driver's door while we piled in. Sam, Corey and Jake jumped in the third row, I sat with Colby in the second row and Laura sat in the passenger seat while she said something about Thomas to Mr. Drummond in French.

We arrived at the front of the building to Thomas flagging us down and Laura put down her window to tell him to get in behind Mr. Drummond.

The ride was quick, only a few minutes and a bit nerve racking on narrow streets with a big car, but we made it all in one piece.

We all jumped out at exactly 10:15 and jogged behind Thomas towards a boy in khakis and a white button up with a polo sweater and loafers. He was the exact opposite of what I imagined him to look like. He was literally the exact opposite of Laura's type but somehow he made her all blushy.

The boy waved us over when he saw Thomas and Laura and Thomas called to him, "Nath, salut mon pote!"

"Salut!" The boy replied "À toi aussi, Laura!"

There it was. He seemed more shy when speaking to her. Laura has a weakness for flirty guys, no matter their superficial looks, but based on his face I would guess she is the only girl he flirts with.

"Il y a tes amis? La fille est ton béguin?" Nathaniel asked a bit quietly and giving Thomas a teasing face.

"Oui, nous somme les amis, mais je ne sais quoi le mot 'béguin.' Je m'appelle Amelia. Ils sont Jake, Corey, Colby, et Sam. Laura et Thomas sont amis de ma famille." I replied.

Thomas froze and looked very uncomfortable while Nathaniel looked a bit embarrassed. I would have to look up what 'béguin' meant later. Or maybe I could just ask Laura. She was laughing very animatedly.

"Vous parlez français!" Nath smiled but seemed to regret assuming I didn't.

"Un peu, ils ne peuvent pas, desolée." I replied laughed trying to break the ice a little.

"That is fine! Let's speak English, your friends look lost." He waved to the boys, "It is nice to meet you, I am Nathaniel. Miss Amelia already told me all of your names."

"Miss Amelia? Ooo I feel important." I tapped a finger on my chin as I spoke and Nathaniel laughed, "Amelia is just fine, Nathaniel."

"Nath, please, now, let us get underway! First stop, the tower!"

Nath was the best tour guide. He was funny and super friendly, but somehow also knew everyone probably from his tour guide work, and helped us skip the line on just about everything.

We didn't have a reservation to climb the tower, but Nath knew a guy and we went right up. We crossed the Seine and boarded the green line at the Trocadéro Gardens, arriving at the Arc de Triomphe soon after and receiving similar treatment. We took pictures in the Grand Palais before quickly moving on to the Palais de Garnais where we got to meet a few of the ballerinas in their rehearsal and watch for a bit. It was almost noon at that point and we had to decide between the Louvre and Notre Dame. In the end, we decided to take pictures at the pyramid outside the Louvre, even though Nath said it wasn't really that great of a sight, and then continued on to tour the Notre Dame.

When we finished at the Notre Dame, we all went to meet Mr. and Mrs. Andrews at Tour D'Argent, a famous restaurant on the south side of the Seine just across the river from the Notre Dame.

It was 1:00 so we would only have about 40 minutes before we had to head to Gare du Nord. The food was great even though we had to rush and could not stay to enjoy everything about such a fancy restaurant.

Laura and Thomas came along to see us off at the train station and when we arrived two new suitcases were taken from the trunk by Mr. Drummond.

I went to say that he accidentally brought two bags that weren't ours and Laura yelled, "Surprise! Guess who's coming with you!"

"What?" I looked at her like she had three heads.

"Get used to us, Lili, we're following you all the way to Rome! We asked your 'bosses' if they minded and called Uncle Leo last night. You're stuck with us!" Thomas hugged me tight and hung on me while I tried to hold myself up. He was heavy.

"Are you guys sure this is okay?" I looked to Sam, Colby, Corey, and Jake.

"Yeah of course, Thomas and Laura seem super cool and we had a lot of fun with them here." Sam said, "Also, more people with a connection to demonology would be helpful."

"Agreed." Corey stuck his hand up and Jake copied him.

"I think this will be a great opportunity for all of us." Colby smiled.

"Me too, didn't you say you missed me, Lili?" Thomas teased.

"Shut up." I shoved him off and walked to grab my suitcases, "Now let's go okay? Don't want to be late."

We went through expedited screening at the station, were escorted to a first class compartment on the train, and were personally greeted by some of the on board staff. Who knew traveling with two friends who have black passports would be so fun?
