《Into the Shadows》Chapter 19: The Explanation

Nobody could even think about sleeping, not after everything that I had just confirmed for them. It was time for us to have a serious talk about my findings in the castle.

"First off," I said, "the demon isn't the only one that lied to you. I did too and I'm sorry."

"What exactly did you lie about?" Colby asked, "Are you a fan or something?"

"No! I hate the paranormal, so goddamn much! I only took this job to help my mom out. I lied about something else. I know a lot more about all of this than most people because I grew up around a bunch of religious scholars and demonologists. I'm sure you guys have heard the stories about Ed and Lorraine Warren?" I asked, they nodded, "Well after their success in the 70s and 80s in helping the church identify real demonic events, the Church authorized for more people to be taught demonology. My father was one of those people in the late 80s and throughout the 90s he worked for the church in that respect. When I was born, he quit and became a reporter for a Catholic magazine because he had seen the toll that line of work had taken on Ed Warren. He wanted to be home to have good interactions with me. I wanted to learn a bit about what he did as a kid so he taught me some things and when he died I read the whole library in his study on demonology, religion, and all his notes I could find about cases he worked. Most of the favors I could call in if we really need help with this are his old contacts. Priests he met when he was studying at the Vatican, other demonologists, and people with gifts like Lorraine Warren. "

"What the fuck?!" Corey looked ready to shit a brick.

"You just conveniently didn't mention this?" Sam asked.

"I don't like talking about my dad. I should have told you earlier, I'm sorry. I can offer more insight now that I've seen the interaction you had in the castle. I know I don't seem like I know what I'm doing with how freaked out I've been. I am just not trained to handle these situations, but when I can have a minute to cool out and feel safe, I can assess the information and give a quote unquote 'diagnosis.'"

"So what is this 'diagnosis'?" Colby asked.

"I think we are dealing with Satan."

"WHAT?!" They all looked at my like I was insane, but at the same time I think they were terrified.

"Wait! That came out worse than I meant. I don't mean Satan in the modern sense. I mean Satan in the way he is defined by Judaism. Satan is more an idea than a being, Satan really just means 'hinderer' or 'tempter,' Satan is just an illusion like a mirage in the desert meant to trick you, hinder you in your path to find God and tempt you away from goodness. In the situation today, I say we are dealing with Satan as a tempter, luring you with knowledge into the darkness, hindering you in your path to the truth about the paranormal and the afterlife."

"So you think that this 'satan' has been with us for this whole paranormal mission trying to trick us?" Sam asked

"I think this is an inconceivably strong Satan the tempter in the Jewish sense. I can not say how long this demon has been with anyone, but I can say this Satan is a force that has been with you your whole lives and the stronger you press for the truth the harder it will bite back with temptations and falsehood. It is something you need to be careful of. It won't matter where you go, what you do, Satan, this demon or evil force, will leave us alone until we pick up the paranormal hunt again. If you want to push off going home, I can get us to Rome to meet with some of my father's old colleagues. I can call them in the morning."

"This is insane..." Jake said, "I mean, I'm up for going if you all are, but I feel like this might just be a wild goose chase."

"I honestly think it might be worth a shot." Colby said, "And these guys we are going to see will have way more insight than Lia."

"The footage and the knowledge alone that we will get from this will be incredible so I say let's go." Sam said, "Corey? What do you think?

"I think I am definitely up for the most holy place on Earth after this." Corey said.

"Actually I think Israel is still more holy, but Rome is definitely the second most holy, probably the safest holy place since the wars in the Middle East have swept up most religious sights of three of the four biggest religions in the world." I said.

"Alright, I think we should get some rest, whether that means food and laying around or actually sleeping, and tomorrow we can head back to London." Sam said.

"I'll make arrangements for us tomorrow morning on the ride back. I can probably get us somewhere to stay too." I explained.

"Do you think it's safe if we do some stuff outside? Like see if the dowsing rods work outside the castle?" Corey asked.

"I don't know why the hell you would want to do that, but feel free. I would not recommend wandering around too far. Try to stay away from water. If you see something or feel freaked out come back and I can dowse you in holy water again or smudge you or something. I am going to stay right here though, I'm done for today." I plopped down on a couch and tucked my knees up to my chest.

"Cool, we'll be back. Colby, Jake, you want to stay here since the demon could come back if Lia is alone?" Sam asked.

"I was going to stay here anyway because I'm freezing." Colby said.

"And I'm starving, so see you later, dudes." Jake waved bye to Corey and Sam.

I closed my eyes as I felt a blanket draped over me. I was exhausted, both mentally and physically.

Tomorrow was going to be a long day.
