《An unlikely friendship》part 21

"You're by the window Dec" Ant stated as they found their place on the plane.
They both settled into their seats and Ant reminded Dec to fasten his seatbelt.
"Wow" Dec exclaimed "these are so comfy and spacious,I always hear people moaning about there not being enough room on planes"
"Dec" Ant laughed "you're in business class"
"Oh" Dec replied sheepishly.
"You nervous?" Ant asked.
"Why would I be nervous?" Dec queried confused,as he watched the hustle and bustle that was going on down on the tarmac, with luggage being brought towards the hold to be loaded, amongst over things.
"Well" Ant continued "a lot of people don't like flying"
"Don't know if I like it until try it do I?" Dec shrugged.
Going by how excited Dec had been ever since he had picked him up in a taxi for their journey to the airport,Ant could only imagine that Dec would completely love the experience.
Ant wished he could feel like that too,but flying anywhere was just getting from A to B for him,he'd done it so often that he didn't think of it as much different than getting on a train or driving somewhere.
But he was loving how much Dec was into it,so was determined to give him the full experience.
"Wow" Dec exclaimed,as the plane pushed back from its holding area "we're moving"
"Yep" Ant smiled "soon be on our way"
Dec watched intently as the stewardess went through the safety drill, being one of only a few people who were actually taking notice.
He couldn't take his eyes off her, thinking what a weird job it must be to be up in the air all the time for work.
Ant smiled to himself as he watched Dec's child like fascination with everything that was going on.
Soon the plane had finished taxiing and was in position and as the pilot went full throttle and the force caused Dec to lean back in his seat,he couldn't help but squeal out in excitement.
"Wheeeeee"
"Shh Dec" Ant laughed "ya nutter"
Dec took a sharp intake of breath as the wheels left the ground,it was a weird feeling like nothing he'd ever experienced before,he could only liken it to a fairground ride,as he leant forward against the force to look out of the window, amazed at how tiny everything was becoming down on the ground.
"That was fun" he announced,as the plane began to level out "I want to do it again"
"Not just yet" Ant laughed "settle back and enjoy the ride,we've got a good few hours before we land"
"How many?" Dec asked curiously.

"About ten and a half" Ant stated "give or take a few minutes"
"TEN AND A HALF?" Dec replied shocked,in a much louder voice than he had intended.
"It's fine Dec" Ant smiled "it'll go quicker than you think...look"
He tapped the television screen in front of Dec "there's plenty of stuff for you to watch and we'll be brought plenty to eat and drink, just enjoy the experience"
Right on cue,the stewardess came along and offered Ant and Dec a glass of champagne each, which they gratefully accepted.
"Wow,champagne" Dec stated gleefully "how posh"
Ant was right and Dec did enjoy the flight, watching several movies and listening to music while also having chats with Ant in between.
"Hey" Dec said while removing his headphones and elbowing Ant gently in the ribs "I just thought of something"
"What's that?" Ant asked.
"You never told me what name you came up with for the dog walking business?" Dec replied.
Ant immediately took a small card out of his pocket and handed it to Dec who scanned over the words curiously.
"Ant,Dec and Rex" Dec frowned as he read out loud "er...what?"
"Do you like it?" Ant asked hopefully.
Dec didn't want to hurt Ant's feelings, but he really wasn't sure.
"Well" he pondered "why is my name there?it's your company and who is Rex?"
"Your name is there because you're going to be a big part of the company" Ant announced proudly "kinda like my right hand man and Rex is a popular name for a dog and it rhymes with Dec"
"Umm...Dec and Rex don't rhyme" Dec pointed out.
"Well,it's close enough" Ant replied "aren't you keen?"
Dec looked at the disappointment in Ant's eyes.
"It'll grow on me" Dec smiled "it's fine and at least it's catchy"
"I can always change it further down the line if I need to" Ant shrugged.
Finally, they began to make their descent into Maĺè airport, where after disembarking from the plane,Ant led Dec to another area of the airport.
"What are we doing here?" Dec asked confused.
"Waiting for our seaplane" Ant grinned.
"Our what?" Dec enquired surprised.
"Our seaplane" Ant repeated "to take us to the island we're staying on"
"But we're already on an island" Dec protested "we have to get another bloody plane?"
Ant couldn't help but giggle to himself at how Dec's excitement had waned after being up in the air for so long.
"This is just the main island where the airport is" Ant stated "not where we're staying...don't worry though, you'll love the seaplane,it's really cool"

"How does that work then?" Dec frowned.
"Well,it takes off and lands on the sea" Ant grinned "hence the name seaplane, they're only small though, carry ten or twelve people maybe, they're basically like taxis here"
Dec nodded unconvincingly as Ant led him into the departure lounge.
"What the hell?" Dec laughed as he looked around "beds?"
"Yep" Ant grinned as he flopped down onto one of the double beds "make yourself comfortable"
Dec couldn't believe what he was seeing as he glanced around at all the other people sprawled out on the other beds, casually chatting or watching the television in front of them.
"This is some place" Dec laughed.
"You ain't seen nothing yet" Ant winked.
Around an hour later they were aboard the seaplane and Dec was truly amazed as it skimmed the water and rose into the air.
He also couldn't get over the fact that there was no door between them and the small cockpit, meaning he could see everything the pilots were doing,he was also fascinated by the fact they were flying the plane in bare feet.
"So crazy" he giggled.
A short flight later, they were landing at the most beautiful place that Dec had ever seen.
He looked around as he climbed down from the plane, noticing the white sand and deep blue sea and the practically empty beach with just a few sun bathers dotted around, some of them sipping on refreshing cocktails.
"Oh my God" he exclaimed "it's so beautiful here"
"Welcome to the Maldives Dec" Ant beamed.
They were then led to their accommodation by a member of staff.
"What is this?" Dec asked, totally in awe of what was in front of him.
"It's a water bungalow" Ant beamed.
"It's sticking out into the water" Dec noted.
"Exactly" Ant nodded "amazing isn't it?"
Ant gave the member of staff a generous tip before showing Dec around the luxurious villa.
"Look" Ant urged excitedly as he led Dec outside onto the small balcony "there's a ladder leading directly into the sea,can go for a swim whenever we like"
"I've never seen anything like this" Dec smiled in total amazement.
Ant placed an arm around his shoulder "we're going to have the best time, now do you want to freshen up and go and check the place out or would you rather have a nap first?"
"All that travelling was pretty knackering" Dec frowned.
"Ok" Ant smiled "how about a shower and a nap, then we'll go and explore?we don't have to do much today,we've got two weeks here after all, maybe just a little look around, then grab something to eat?"
"Sounds good to me" Dec replied gratefully.
"Good" Ant nodded "you can go first in the shower if you like"
So after freshening up,having a much needed nap and getting dressed into some casual shorts and T shirts,Ant and Dec took a leisurely stroll around the island before making their way to the restaurant.
"There's sand everywhere" Dec noticed "even on the floor of the restaurant"
"Yep" Ant grinned, kicking his flip flops off under the table "take a look at what everyone is wearing on their feet"
"They're all barefoot" Dec stated astonished "does no one own shoes here?"
"Yeah" Ant laughed "you don't have to wear shoes if you don't want to,not many people do"
"That's it then" Dec smiled, also kicking off his flip flops "bare feet until we go home"
"Well, unless we go out on any excursions" Ant pointed out.
Dec was amazed at the choice of food on offer and settled for a seafood platter.
"I'm so grateful for this Ant" he smiled "this is such an amazing place"
"It's absolutely my pleasure" Ant beamed "I'm just glad you agreed to come,I enjoy your company and I know you'll love it here"
"I already do" Dec smiled.
"I tell you what" Ant said "how about once we've finished our dinner,we go down to the beach and watch the sunset?they're usually pretty spectacular"
"That sounds amazing" Dec smiled.
"Great" Ant nodded.
So after dinner they started making their way down to the seafront, but Ant stopped suddenly before they quite reached the ocean
"What is it Ant?" Dec asked curiously.
"You know what would make this even more perfect?" Ant grinned.
"What?"
"Some cocktails" Ant beamed.
"Ok" Dec laughed.
"I tell you what Dec" Ant continued "you go and find a nice spot down by the sea and I'll go to the bar and get them, what do you fancy?"
"Oh,I don't mind" Dec smiled "surprise me"
"Ok" Ant agreed and made his way back to the bar.
After having a chat to the bar staff for a few minutes,he picked up the colourful cocktails that he had ordered and started making his way back to Dec.
Ant could see that Dec was now sitting down on the sand, gazing out to sea and was soon standing next to him.
"Here we are Dec" Ant beamed "I got you a blue lagoon...enjoy"
Ant sat down on the sand next to Dec on the sand, but Dec didn't say a word or even accept the drink.
Ant looked at Dec confused.
"You alright?"
But Dec wasn't alright.
Ant stared at his friend, now noticing the streams of tears rolling down his cheeks and the quiet sobs emanating from him.
"Dec?" Ant asked worried.
"What on earth is wrong?"
