《The Ultimate Guide To Writing PJO Fanfics》Writing Percy
Advertisement
Percy can be a hard topic to write. A lot of fanfics make him way more OP (overpowered.) than he is, and it's a problem. Now, before someone comments, I mean fanfics where Percy doesn't receive every single god's blessing( and even then, Percy's power level can be off the charts.)
One of the most crucial mistakes I see is Percy walking away from a battle unharmed, and his prowess with the sword. Now, Percy is a very good swordsman, but he's been beaten numerous times. Remember when Chrysaor beat him? Yes, he is the best swordsman in 300 years, but that's only in Camp Half-Blood.
Now, a lot of fanfics have Percy beat the gods. I even believe I read one where he was said to be better than Apollo at archery. (He had been practicing for 5 years, mind you.)
"...."
Just no.
Apollo and Artemis have used the bow far longer than Percy has even been alive, times 10. Yes, Percy practiced, but that's just not realistic. In the same fanfic, it was said Artemis could beat Apollo in an archery contest.
I will say this as calmly as I can. Apollo is the god of archery. Artemis is not. She is the goddess of the hunt. Yes, she has great prowess over the bow, but Apollo is literally the god of archery. I don't care how hard you say she practiced, how long she's been in the hunt. She. Is NOT. The goddess of archery.
Apollo could beat Artemis in an archery competition, and nobody can tell me otherwise. Come on, readers, give me any reason.
Prove to me that Artemis could beat Apollo in an archery contest, and I'll follow you, shout you out, and do one thing of your choice(as long as it is in reason). I promise you.

"I swear by the River Styx, and by my Troth. As the Fates and The Norns as my witnesses, I shall honor my promise. May my heart perish by Ammit the devourer, and Osiris and Anubis rip apart my flesh and soul, if I dishonor my oath." Aaron said aloud, as thunder and lightning crackled across the sky.
Stones were being rolled, controlling his destiny, but they came up in his favor. He heard a faint laughing sound, like something three old hags would do. He heard the snip of scissors, and a vision of a molten red and black string, like lava, was almost cut. But a fraying end stayed, signifying he was telling the truth.
He breathed a sigh of relief, and wiped his brow. He really needed to stop swearing by ancient powers.
That totally wasn't filler because this chapter was running low on words.
Now, Percy is not a skilled martial artist. He does have strength, but not nearly enough to do some of the things that he does in other fanfic. Now before you point out that he held the sky, pretty much anyone can do that. Luke went under it willingly, remember?
It's surviving that's the hard part.
But anyway..... Percy should not be stronger than all of the avengers. I even remember a fanfic where Annabeth beat up the Hulk, and Percy was stronger than her!
Onto Annabeth. Ever since the judo flip, people have made her really OP, and mostly that's alright, because fanfic logic. I think she might be a match for Hawkeye, in terms of fighting and skill, or maybe Black Widow. So I won't write about that.
It's Percy we need to worry about. Percy can be beaten in sword fighting, and he can't take all of the Avengers at once. He practices sword fighting, and trains, but not all of the time. Really, he isn't very weak.

Sidenote: Percy can't take Poseidon. He only has a fraction of his power.
And Percy doesn't rely on his powers often. People exaggerate what he can do with his powers. I read one, where to fight the Avengers, he made a huge water avatar, and he beat up all of the avengers.
I'm getting way too hooked on Percy Jackson and Avengers Crossovers right now.
The point is, Percy is not as dumb and OP as he is always made out to be. He is good at strategy, and lead an army at 16, and he knew his limits. One of his best traits is knowing his limits. When Ares curse effected him, he knew his limits, and held the sky instead.
Instead of giving a huge amount of evidence, I'll say this.

OUTLIERS
30 years ago brought the first superhumans, regular people given great power seemingly at random. 15 years ago brought the paranormals, stranger and often weaker in their abilities, but far more numerous. Today, the world holds its breath . . . Or at least, it should. Most people, though, are just trying to get on with their lives; some successfully, some less so. It's a sensible goal, but it can be hard when shadowy conspiracies and worldwide N.G.O.s are turning your city into a proxy battleground over world-shattering secrets. It’s bad enough when you’ve just woken up with superpowers and terrorists are holding your school hostage. It’s even worse if you’re an illegal vigilante stuck in the middle of the whole Charlie Foxtrot after a supervillain raid drops vital information in your lap. For Hannah Eiling-Kingsford and Flint Perez, life is about to get a lot harder to get on with. ----- Outliers is a superhero story. Okay, so not so much superhero as vaguely superhero-ish. It's about two teenagers dealing with, among other things, new powers, psycho exes, mysterious datapads and a giant, secret war between the foremost powers-that-be, over information that could forever change the world. Again. You know, normal teenage stuff. Outliers contains some foul language and mild sexual references. It is a complete story, and can also be read on its own website. If you enjoy the story, please consider writing a review, either here or on WebFictionGuide, or just drop a vote for it on Topwebfiction. Any and all support is appreciated, and comments, questions and critiques are all expected and encouraged.
