《MIDDLE GROUND》14

I couldn't believe how large their home was, half underground to keep out the light and above looked like an old estate owned by some Duke or Earl.
I could barely walk in my heels, so Fiona carried me until we were above ground. Everything went by so quickly I didn't get to take it all in, but now that I knew there was a lot more to this place I felt the urge to explore!
The evening was chilly and damp, the moon almost full and could be seen clearly through the open French doors. Everyone looked like they were normal humans but there were so many of them.
"Is this a dinner party or a party party?"
"It's a ball actually. Dinner will be served there."
"But you don't eat..."
"Shush! Just have fun!" She pulled onto my arm holding me tight to her. "We can eat human food, we can't live off of it and we certainly don't prefer it. But this ball is for young werewolves looking for their mates."
I gasped and tried to turn back.
"Uh-uh Cinderella, you are my date and no one has stood me up in..." her eyes looked up and fingers moved as if she were trying to count the exact day and time. "...well let's just say it's been a long time. Plus your scent is delectable. Wolves use scent to find their mate and usually will end up in similar scented packs."
"But..." I stopped myself before I could create a question and made a statement instead. "Werewolves with vampires...doesn't sound dangerous at all!"
"Oh no silly, we don't mate with them. That's once in a blue moon," she winked laughing as we stayed on the side of those coming in for the party. Security was tight, a red carpet was rolled out and even ended in a circle in the entrance way. The ceilings were high and the windows larger letting light in. The cobble stone looked centuries old and the portraits of what looked like 17th century royalty were hanging on the walls next to smaller oil paintings of the sun rising and setting. Interesting for a place literally crawling with vampires that cannot be in the sun.
"So werewolves are created, just like us." Fiona looked at me amused with her little joke, "well like me. Contrary to popular modern day lure, there is no family line, one has to be bitten to be turned. And just like vampires they get serious bloodlust when hungry and living on their own, so many die in the process. Every 3 months they meet up in neutral territory, for instance our humble abode, and sniff one another out."

"Wow, real life werewolves. And vampires."
"And faeries!"
"Yes! And soulmates. A real life fairytale."
My eyes were looking at all the gorgeous gowns and buff men in tuxedos. Each wolf, just like each person, having their own flare of personal style added here and there. Some looked like they belonged together or might even be related but I could tell this was international.
I thought the werewolf population would be larger.
"And here I thought you were going to stay in Fiona's room where it's ," I jumped hearing Oisin's voice behind me. It made me blush, luckily we added extra make up.
"What a surprise! Big brother. Look at my date and tell me how jealous you are. Come on, I want to hear it." Fiona was poking a bear but I had to remember what Liam said about how she tends to get her way.
"Fiona. Can I talk with you privately for a moment?"
"No." She states and rushes us forward. Taking a glass of champagne from a waiter and hitting it with a knife to get everyone's attention. "Welcome! Can you all hear me alright?"
Everyone laughed. Yep, vampires and werewolves can hear a whisper a mile away.
'Some can even read thoughts' I heard Oisin's voice in my head and had to stop myself from swooning. Or thinking about him.
"My brothers and I welcome you to this wonderful event!" Everyone claps as if on cue. Fiona puts her hand up and continues "We invite you to enjoy yourselves, and remember, tonight you might find your family. Whether that be your mate, your pack, or both." Howling starts. "So go eat, drink, and sniff!" The room erupts with laughter, clapping, and howling.
Doors open to spacious ballroom with lots of space to create more intimate spaces. Heavy white drapes over the walls, the ceiling looks like the open sky, a wooden installation art piece hangs what looks like only inches from the ceiling. It's a celestial blue with cutouts of various constellations, backlit so it honestly looks like I could lay down and be staring up at the open night sky. A few Grecian pillars hold up silky, yet see through, glittery fabric, creating cabana like atmospheres for people to gather.
Waiters and waitresses are serving cocktails and appetizers. Dinner is in an adjoining room, which makes sense. Food can be overpowering and smell is of the upmost importance here. The ballroom has a DJ area decked out in moons. I've heard whispers of an altar to the moon goddess, but haven't had a chance to see it. It must be in another room. This ballroom is scent free, meaning no food, flowers, scented candles, or food. Just drinking, sniffing, dancing, and mingling.

"This is beyond beautiful. It's like Mother Nature designed it herself. Thank you so much my Lady Fiona." A young woman bows before us.
"You're welcome Luna. We can't recreate the actual sky, we'd need the Moon Goddess to do that, but we are lucky to have an artist or two in our clan."
"You've made this a night to remember. I know the Alpha's and Luna's are overwhelmed by the beauty of this space and by your clans kindness." The tall brunette had tears in her eyes. "Our species owes a lot to you and your brothers." The Luna was visibly shaking and trying to hold back her emotions.
Her whole demeanor changed as soon as a man came closer to her. He was very tall and broad with wavy brown hair and green eyes and although he wore a tux, he still let his hair down and didn't shave his 5 o'clock shadow. He looked at her as though she were a goddess herself. Fiona was right there in all her beauty but he only had eyes for her.
"Lady Fiona, my I present to you my mate, Alpha Alexander of the north-eastern united states pack. And my Alexander, this is Lady Fiona that I've told you about."
He bowed and took Fiona's hand, kissing it momentarily before placing his arm around his mate.
"LUCY! You've found your mate!?!?!" Fiona was squealing and trying to resist jumping up and down. "And what a hunk? Where were you hiding Alpha?" Her eyes stayed on Luna Lucy while he described waking up in New York state in the Appalachian mountains a few years ago.
Did he remember his life before?
Probably not.
Can you stop reading my mind?
Can you stop thinking about how attractive these men and women are?
THEY ARE!!! It's like looking at sexy lumberjacks in suits and tall goddesses with naturally beautiful faces...
You're naturally beautiful.
I almost laughed out loud. Holding it back made me snort and caught the attention of Fiona, Lucy, and Alexander.
"My I introduce my very dear friend, Evelyn? She is my date tonight."
"You must be a good friend of Fiona's, she takes pride in watching the unmated shewolves throw themselves at Liam. It gets her all jealous and hot and bothered. Nice to meet you Evelyn." Luna winked at me while teasing her friend.
Fiona and her exchanged knowing looks and seemed to speak their own unspoken language. Maybe these wolves weren't as young as I thought.
"You can call me Evee. Nice to meet you Lucy."
Audible gasps were heard and Alexander let out a growl.
Wow. They really did make you submit to them.
"I'm so sorry, Luna Lucy."
Alex came closer and my eyes now met the floor. I could feel his energy telling me to stand down.
"You can call her Luna."
"Okay." My voice was shaky.
"Excuse us," Fiona guided me over to a high table where Oisin and yet another goddess. She wore a strapless red figure hugging gown. She was already tall but she had red stiletto heels on. Wow!
"Oisin, can I talk to you alone please?" He nodded to Fiona. "Evelyn, this is Jennifer, we will be right back." She gave me a look of 'do not move from this spot' so I took a few deep breaths trying to calm my red blushing skin.
"It gets better. The first time you meet a werewolf is definitely intimating, but just like any other culture, the more you learn about them and their traditions, the more at ease you'll be around them." Jennifer openly offered information.
"Thank you. Yeah that was...erm...not my finest moment." I held my hand out to her but she'd just taken a glass of champagne and she didn't offer her other hand. How odd. Maybe her culture didn't include handshaking.
"You were already the talk of the party when you entered as the new mystery woman in a royal gown. But improperly greeting an Alpha and Luna couple." She shook her head chuckling, "You are going to be a story for centuries to come."
Centuries?
Royal gown?
I needed a drink.
