《Sugar Boo》19

"Eat up. You guys haven't had a taste of decent food for a while I bet," Ava said with a slight smirk implied in her voice.

Mockingly side-eyeing Dad, she brought a glass of red wine to her mouth and downed the whole liquid in one go. I glanced at Mom to see how she took Ava's subtle taunt on her husband. Mom smiled meekly, possibly too tired to argue from hours of traveling.

Of course, there was everything laid on the buffet table, from roasted duck to what appeared to be marinated, john dory fillets over risotto, barbecued pigeons, concassé of oysters, monkfish in a tomato garlic sauce, eggplant caviar, and other good meals which I didn't know the name of. This was no normal dinner night.

It was an extraordinary feast.

"Your assumption is wrong, grandma," Olivia drawled. "Dad usually takes us out for lobster night once a week."

I could see Ava shuddering. "Don't call me shit like that. It makes me want to fire my plastic surgeon."

My sister and I had been taught to call her Ava not grandma or other names associated with old ladies since we were kids because she wasn't ready to use that title. However, being a rebel herself and always breaking the rules, Olivia sometimes ignored her demand only to irk the woman.

"And if that's all you have to say about your Dad's financial state, I feel sorry for you," Ava added, lightly shaking her head.

With a straight face, Dad countered. "It's the family bonding that matters, not how expensive the food is."

"Oh, is it?" Ava asked back. "Where did you get that Miles, from a TV commercial?"

"Yum, this duck tastes good!" I blurted, drawing their eyes to me. At least my attempt to keep them from quarreling worked.

For now.

"Drew, you should try these fillets." Ava gestured to a plate of john dory dish. "Its delicate flesh simply melts in your mouth."

I nodded, looking back at her. "I'd love to once I get over this tasty duck."

"My grandson looks thin. If he ever lives with me, I'll have him looking like a football player, not this spindly twig," she said, inconsiderately.

My heart skipped a beat at the mention of football.

Mom fretted at her remark. "Are you saying I don't feed him enough?"

Choosing to ignore their argument, I immediately brought out my phone and texted Ethan.

His reply was quick.

I had to stop myself from snorting out a giggle.

,

I looked up from my phone when suddenly everyone stopped talking just to see all eyes were fixated on me.

I caught a glimpse of Ava wiggling her eyebrows at me.

.

I couldn't help a smile and think for a good second before replying.

I assumed our chat was over when the little typing bubble indicator didn't show up anymore and the moment I put my phone on the table, my grandma didn't waste her time to interrogate.

"Looks like you got someone special," she started. "The girl must be cute to get you all giddy like that."

"His boyfriend is hot and he plays football too. I think you'd like him," Olivia butted in making Ava gasp in utter shock. My body went cold.

Dad stared her down. "Can you stop with that joke? Your brother isn't gay."

"Dad, lighten up," she told him through her chuckles.

Mom looked at me with gentle eyes. "It's his life. All I want is for my son to be happy with whoever he chooses."

I swallowed a lump in my throat.

"Being gay doesn't run on my side of the family," Dad spat.

"Bigotry does I assume," the voice of Ava came to ear.

Realizing my limbs were trembling under the table, I took a deep, heavy breath.

"I'm not what you guys think I am." I spurted, quite shaky then turned my head towards Dad. "I won't be a problem."

"I'm sure the fact that our daughter exchanging inappropriate pictures with boys online is more concerning than Andy's sexuality." Mom said after a few moments of silence.

Dad quirked his head to the side in question. "What now?"

"Get me another bottle of wine!" Ava called out to her servant. "It's gonna be a quick show to watch."

"Now you're just making shit up," Olivia denied Mom's claim.

"Admit it," Mom urged, her tone still calm and composed. "I caught you trying to send pictures of your butt to a boy."

Dad couldn't believe what he heard, his mouth was hanging open the whole time. "You did not."

"May I be excluded from this discussion please?" I pleaded though I knew it was useless.

Olivia sprang up from her chair which caused the cutleries to rattle. "Very well. If that's how it's going to be. This is how it's going to be."

"Liv, I'm only going to say this once," Mom warned. "Sit down."

"Or what? You're going to beat me with your new massage apparatus?" Olivia asked through clenched teeth.

Mom shot her a glare. "Olivia, that's not necessary."

"What's not necessary is you being up in my business. Tell me, it must've been frustrating when Dad choose to sleep on the couch instead of in the same bed as you, right?" Olivia questioned mockingly.

The room was thrown into shock by the disclosure as neither one of us stopped my sister from barrelling out.

"I'll go talk to her," Dad muttered, his face beating red, and went after Olivia.

Exhaling a long sigh of her own, Mom buried her face in her palms. I was lost for words to say while exchanging awkward stares with my grandma.

Ava studied Mom for a while until she spoke. "So, which sites are you buying that vibrator from?"
