《A Silent Lover》25. TaekWoon

I rest myself back against the wooden chair, the discomfort only minimized by the plush cushion on its seat. They beg the person sitting there not to stay too long and I for one am not inclined to linger any longer than necessary. The law offices of Kim and Song are the third of such places we've been to today, all of them specializing in family law.

Our first two appointments hadn't met the exacting standards Imani had demanded and we'd left soon after, so it hadn't taken as long to wade through our options as I'd first assumed.

One lawyer had decided to finish his lunch during our first meeting and the second representative had been ten minutes late to our consultation. Imani was on a warpath but I could hardly blame her. In this case I wanted perfection as well and not a single thing could go wrong. Nothing could be worse than losing Jae because we had crappy counsel. More to the point, we could afford the best and neither of us gave a second thought to cash amounts.

"So, what are we looking at Song-ssi?" Imani asked while leaning back into her chair, small hands folded delicately against her legs. I watched as she crossed them under her skirt, the short fabric barely reaching her mid thighs. She claimed that the grey jacket, white blouse and matching skirt were her business casual but she looked good enough to eat and it was making it hard for me to concentrate on what was happening.

Surely if Imani had been my English teacher back while I was in school, I'd be fluent by now. I'd had a taste of my wife more than once, but even now desire simmered beneath the surface. I was both amused and confused by my feelings since I had never been much into carnal fixation, but I felt as though any man would be as weak as I was in Imani's presence.

I looked up at the man in front of us to clear my thoughts and took in his looks instead. Song had a large face with all of its defining features seemingly pushed together in the middle of it; he definitely wasn't a handsome man. However, he had charisma and a certain look in his eyes that I instantly liked. If he didn't screw up this interview, I wouldn't mind having him on our side.

"From what I see here, this case is pretty cut and dry. Even with Kang being your son's biological mother, no judge can ignore the fact that parental rights were given up willingly when she placed him into foster care. It may be admirable that she wants custody now, but the adoption process is still legally binding." He explained.

"And what about her lawyers," Imani interjected. "Surely no one would take the case if they thought she'd lose?"

Song smiled, his eyes crinkling in amusement. "You'd be surprised what people would do when others are desperate Jung-ssi. But in this case, Kang's legal aide is in fact free. She's being helped by an organization dedicated to supporting mothers who've put their children up for adoption. Places like this are popping up more and more lately in Korea as children are shipped out of the country to be raised by adoptive parents."

Imani looked at Song sharply, her gaze narrowed. "Are you saying she has a chance of winning?"

"Not at all Jung ssi. The law is clear and Kang gave up her parental rights status. What we're dealing with here are mere formalities. Kang's petition will be heard by one judge and his ruling will be in your favor. Of that I have no doubt."

"If that's the case; then you're hired," I told Song as I rose to shake his hand. "We appreciate your assistance in this matter and hopefully it'll all be over quickly."

"I'll do my best," Song replied. He stood up from his seat and bowed to both me and Imani as we left his office. My wife took my hand in hers as soon as we left the building and she sighed in stark relief.

"What's wrong, I thought he was ok?" I asked worriedly.

"No, no, he was. It's just...so much you know?" Imani said looking up at me, her eyes sad. "I never expected to be doing this, I'd thought the fight for Jae was over."

"Everything happens for a reason," I assured her, giving her hand a squeeze. "We may not understand now but life works itself out, you'll see. This time I'm here with you and I'm not going anywhere" I told her softly, bringing her hand to my lips for a kiss.

Her returning smirk finally reached her eyes and I felt myself breathe easier in response. Things had been tense lately, not between Imani and myself, but because life in general hadn't made things easy. Even though Vixx's Japanese promotions had just ended, we were now scheduled to start recording for our next comeback in Korea, the first of three in a year-long project.

Imani was just getting her tutoring center close to completion and stress showed plainly on her face even during our light-hearted moments. I was going to be busier than ever and going through a custody battle right now surely had to be some of the worst timing in history.

We all needed a break before things really got too far, and I mentioned this to Imani as we drove back to the orphanage to pick up Jae from his visit there.

"What did you have in mind," she asked me as I explained my idea.

"It'll be just the three of us, all day with no worries. The members and I are off this weekend and it'll be the perfect time to get away. Lotte World is close by and Jae will love it."

"It sounds like fun," Imani agreed enthusiastically and just like that her face's tension eased. Now that she was feeling happy, my own happiness wasn't far behind. I reached for her hand with my right one, easily grabbing up the small appendage. I flashed her a smile and Imani laughed out loud, the sweet sound one I'm sure I'll never tire of hearing.

The weekend came slowly at the end of a long week, and I ended up needing the break even more than I thought. With our success now riding so high and Vixx having become more well known, our standards and the expectations of our fans were at an all-time high. It added an extra level of strain to our meetings, practices and recording sessions. So, when it was finally time to take a break, I was going to go all out.

I had been spending my nights at the dorm because of comeback preparations lasting well into the night, but I had gone back home the night before so that I could wake up with Imani and JaeHyun. It had been worth losing some much-needed sleep; Jae was a ball of bouncing energy and his excitement bled over into my own mood, my drowsiness disappearing in the face of it. Imani was only slightly better, running about in a panic to make sure we had everything we'd need for a day out with a small child. She was stuffing things like spare clothes, wet wipes and bottles of water into a backpack, all while muttering about not forgetting anything.

Acknowledging that we were all a little out of it at the prospect of fun, I hustled my family out the door, ignoring Imani's sighs of frustration and Jae's babbling in delight. Before long we'd reached our goal and I brought out a black baseball cap, one that I pulled down low over my eyes. I was dressed casually today in joggers, a tee-shirt, and some old shoes.

Next to me, Imani looked similar, her pair of skinny jeans, hot pink blouse, and flats comfortable but still making her look amazing. Jae was dressed the best out of all of us, his jeans, black tee-shirt and matching black vans making him look sleekly stylish. I felt my head bopping slightly in happiness, my excitement having only increased the closer we got to the theme park.

Lotte World could easily be described as the Seoul version of Disney world, with its large park rides, life size cartoon characters and magic castle that took up the whole center of the park. Even from the parking lot we can hear screams coming from the rides up ahead. Jae held on to my hand excitedly, exclaiming about how he wanted to get on every single ride. I felt myself blanch a little at the thought, but hopefully he'd be too short to go on the truly terrifying rollercoasters and I comforted myself with the thought.

My phone buzzed impatiently in my back pocket and I passed Jae's hand over to Imani so that I could answer.

"Where are you," the text from HakYeon read, and I replied back quickly that I was already at the park.

"Good, we're all just up ahead at the entrance. We'll meet you there," was his response and I felt a sense of foreboding come over me.

"What are you talking about?" I texted quickly, feeling the need to clarify quickly.

"What's wrong?" Imani asked tugging at my hand gently after noticing my frown.

"I think the guys are here, I just got this text-" I began but was cut off abruptly as a man came up to us.

"Daegunnie!" HakYeon yelled as soon as he saw me. It only took him seconds but he'd ended up right by my side, his hand on my arm in what had to be a death grip; I couldn't get away.

"Cha HakYeon, you should've told us you'd be here, we could've all come together!" Imani admonished him laughingly.

"I shouldn't have told you where I was going," I said only loud enough for N to hear and he squeezed my arm even harder, all the while beaming at Imani.

"We wanted it to be a surprise, right guys?" HakYeon said as he turned around and the other members came walking up, all of them having set off at a stroll when they noticed me while N had run on ahead.

"I can't believe you thought you could play all on your own Hyung," Hyuk spoke up, the smile on his face one of pure evil. HongBin nodded in agreement and playfully ruffled Jae's hair in greeting. Imani had quickly been caught up in conversation by Ken and Ravi and she laughed at whatever jokes they were telling her.

JaeHyun seemed to be the happiest now that he had even more adults to fawn attention over him and I felt myself sigh in defeat. The day spent as a small family had been smashed to bits, now that the extended family were here and it was like someone had invited five annoying uncles to my peaceful day.

We set off at a leisurely pace, all of us exclaiming at the same things Jae did in an effort to make him have as much fun as possible. The guys had scrambled ahead with my son in tow to buy us all animal headbands and somehow, I'd managed to get stuck with the cat ears. I gritted my teeth as Jae laughed happily and even Imani couldn't fight to keep the smile off her face. Cursing my members as fools under my breath, we began scouting for suitable children's rides and some of the members broke off to get in line for the scarier attractions.

While Jae rode a miniature version of a ride that was basically seated swings going around in a circle, Imani, HakYeon and I watched and took pictures. The day wasn't too sunny, but most of the clouds had drifted off and I felt a light sheen of sweat coat my neck.

"Do you have a water in there?" I asked N, pointing to the huge bag he had hanging over his shoulder. He pushed the flap off of the oddly shaped thing, looking frankly ecstatic that someone had asked him what might be inside.

"Of course, flavored or mineral?" He asked me while rummaging inside.

"Flavored," I said mildly excited at the prospect of having something good to drink. "Do you have c-"

"Cherry, just for you," he said and presented me with the bottle of still cold water. "And I have some apple slices in here too if you want. I know your stomach has been sensitive lately, you shouldn't be eating all this greasy food," he scolded sounding worse than my own mom. I rolled my eyes and took the proffered slices, only just noticing that Imani had been watching us with a smile.

"HakYeon-ah, could you teach me how to pack a bag like that?" she asked admiringly.

"This? It's nothing special," he boasted. "If I wasn't here these guys would be a mess."

"Your mothering skills are superior sunbae, teach me your ways," Imani joked. But there was no joking with N who promptly wrapped her arm around his and walked away with my wife, chattering on about what to pack for specific types of trips and planning for all eventualities.

I felt my right eye twitch as I watched them get further away, my earlier irritation coming back in full force. He just took my wife away, just like that! I felt myself pouting until Jae ran down from the swings and into my arms. I comforted myself in the knowledge that someone still cared and we made our way to quickly catch up with the other two, as a small voice told me that next he wanted to get on the scariest ride he could find.

True to his words, anything and everything that Jae could manage to fit onto was what he rode that day. And since most of them required parental supervision if such a young child was going, Imani and I found ourselves on the rides as well. Imani seemed to enjoy the thrills but after a few too many drops, I was exhausted. Feeling somewhat dizzy, I sent the members off to escort JaeHyun on more rides while Imani and I took a rest. The eating area around us was still messy from the lunch the guys had eaten before they'd left and Imani was casually piling up the scraps, trying to neaten the table.

"This was a really great idea," she complimented me and gracing me with a full smile that made my breath catch. "Jae's having so much fun and you know he's loving the attention. What made you think to invite the boys out too?"

"It was just a lucky guess," I said lying through my teeth with a grin. "More people means more happiness, right?"

"Right, "she said sitting down close to me and resting her head against my shoulder. "But being alone is just as good." I mumbled my agreement as we watched people go by, the sounds of the park blending together until it was a dull murmur.

"Yeobo, why do you think Kang decided to come back now of all times? It just seems really sudden."

"I don't really know, but I suppose it's because of this feeling we have now. Wanting to have family around to be with is something everyone wants; she just doesn't know anyway else to get it. She's been stuck ever since she gave up Jae."

"It may be selfish, but I want to keep him for myself. I want him with me, with our family. Is that wrong?"

"Loving someone is never wrong, and you deserve to be selfish about him, you're his mother and I'm his father. Whether or not Kang understands this, it will have to be something she accepts," I said softly, glad I hadn't been the only one feeling hints of doubt.

Imani kissed my cheek suddenly and I felt myself heat up in embarrassment. I pulled her closer, wanting to shield myself from the crowd as I fizzled inside.

"What was that for?" I squeaked out.

"For being here with me, for loving Jae, for making me love you," she said easily and smiled up at me.

I lifted her head from my shoulder and kissed her soundly on the mouth, my own smile wo wide it hurt.

"You're welcome."
