《Our Ancient Love》Chapter 21: The Tension

I slowly walk downstairs and see my parents watching the news. My mom takes a sip of her tea before she looks over her mug, seeing that I entered the room.
"Oh you're here," she says as she places her mug down on the coffee table. She looks up at me and smiles.
Ok maybe they DON'T know. "What did you guys want to talk to me about?" I ask as I sit on the seat across from them.
"We just wanted to know why...." my mom pauses.
I gulp. "Why you didn't call us when you made it safely to work and why you didn't come say good morning to us."
I breath a sigh of relief. "Sorry. I guess I should have, huh?"
"Yes you should have," my dad says as he furrows his eyebrows.
My mom gives him a light hit on his hand and he immediately fixes his face.
"It's just that we haven't seen you since yesterday morning and we really missed you," my mom says.
"Aww I missed you guys too. It felt kind of weird to leave the house with no one at home except for Sandy." Sandy, laying in the middle of the room, perks up her ears and looks at me. I giggle.
"Yes, just make sure that next time you call us. We were thinking about you the whole day and were hoping that you were okay," my dad says.
"Sorry about that. Next time I will definitely call you guys to put your minds at ease."
There was a long silence in the room and my parents just look at me and give me that weird smile that you would normally give to strangers. I give them a small toothy grin.

"Alright you can go," my mom says as she grabs her mug. My dad grabs the remote and turns up the volume.
I walk towards the stairs and look back at them. They were too distracted by the tv to notice me looking at them. I put my hand on the railing and walk slowly up the stairs. When I'm almost near the top I hear my dad say something.
"Also," he starts,"we know about the boy."
I stop walking and pause for what seemed like forever. My heart nearly stops and I can feel my stomach rumbling as I feel the need to throw up. I slowly turn around expecting my dad to look very angry and my mom very disappointed, but instead they looked extremely expressionless.
Oh no. They're REALLY mad. I slowly walk down the stairs and accidentally skip a step and fall to the floor. I look up at them hoping to see a smile on their faces, but my dad coughs into his arm and my mom takes another sip of her tea.
I sit back in the seat. Sandy whines and lays her head down as if she was also in trouble. I look at my parents' expressionless faces. The tension in the room only grew more and more the longer all three of us just looked at each other. My dad opens his mouth to say something and my jaw nearly drops to the floor with what comes out of his mouth.
