《Evolve》13 - Thou Art a Jerk

I'm sitting with Zoey, Nicole and Dana at lunch, and they're all asking about the play.

"How can you be in a play with Logan?" Nicole asks, as shocked as we all are that Zoey still wants to play the lead. It's not a secret that Logan is the least liked in the group, and the two leads have to kiss, so it is a surprise that she's still willing.

"Have you seen him act? He's like incredible."

"He is," I say, twirling my fork in my spaghetti. "Although, he's still Logan."

"He's such a jerk," Dana says, and I smirk.

"The biggest."

"You'd know," Nicole says, to Dana, who flicks food at her. "She flicked an olive at me!" Nicole complains, though I doubt it really hurt.

Zoey sigh, "all right, I know this is gonna sound weird, but when we're on stage, I see him as a different person."

I frown, "but he isn't, he's just acting."

"Yeah, what do you mean?" Nicole asks.

"I don't know, he just seems so sincere and sweet." I drop my fork.

"Yeah, but he's still Logan," Dana says.

"Yeah, listen to us," I tell her.

"And in the last scene, you have to kiss him," Nicole points out. I know Logan's thrilled about the kiss, and I'm pretty sure it's why he signed up. Sincere and sweet.

"I know."

"Wait," Nicole says, "do you like him?"

Zoey scrunches her face up, "I didn't say that."

Nicole fires back, "you didn't not say it."

"Yeah," I say, "usually you deny things if they're not true." Zoey shrugs as we keep eating. I feel awkward, Logan is my friend and I see him all the time, I don't want to know stuff that I can't tell him if it involves him. "I'm gonna go," I say, showing my empty plate.

The next day, with another rehearsal and another awkward chat with Logan out of the way, I bump into Chase on my way to class, and he seems bummed. I'm not entirely sure that it's because he lost out on being the lead.

"What's up, Jim?" I ask, grinning goofily at him. He slams him head against my shoulder and I'm forced to stop walking.

"Logan is the lead!" He shouts. "Why did this have to happen?"

"Because you couldn't just tell Zoey you're in love with her?" He glares at me.

"That not true-" he seems to realise it's stupid to argue with me. "Why does she have to kiss Logan." He groans and I pat him shoulder.

"I'm not too thrilled either, do you know how weird it is having him and Zoey be so involved? My friendship circles are becoming more like friendship triangles." He doesn't seem to know what I'm saying, but oh well.

"What do I do?" He asks.

"Go to class," I tell him, "talk to someone else."

"Very helpful," he says, grumpily. "Oh, Michael, great you can help."

Michael comes over as we resume walking. Chase catches him up on the situation, though he's already well versed. "Can I go?" I ask, but Chase pulls me back next to them as I try to leave and I take that as a no.

"You're our Logan informant!" He says. "It's my own fault," he begins ranting. "I mean, why'd I have to write a play in the first place?"

"Because it's impressive."

"Cause you stink at sports."

Chase isn't pleased with my compliment and is offended by Michael's insult. Clearly he can't be pleased. "Whatever. Now Logan gets to kiss Zoey and she's gonna let him."

"Didn't they already kiss in rehearsal?" Michael asks and I shake my head.

"Not yet."

"Fletcher wants to save it for the actual performance," Chase tells him, "to 'preserve the magic'." I laugh at the memory.

Michael scoffs, "you got it bad for Zoey, don't you?" I laugh again.

"I think he's got their mortgage set up already."

"No!" He says, forcefully. "I just don't think it's proper for a young woman to be kissing in public." I stop us now, and raise my eyebrow at him. "What?"

"Chase, you wrote the kiss into the play knowing a young woman would be doing it, in public!" His eyes widen. "You are such a bad liar," I scoff at him.

"You didn't care when it was you she was gonna kiss," Michael says, and we fist bump.

"Look, do you want to be Logic Man, here, or do you want to be my friend? I'm dying here? And you've not given me any dirt on Logan!"

I'm speechless, "what the hell? I never said I'd get you 'dirt' on Logan!"

"All right," Michael says, putting a hand on each of our shoulders. "Calm down. Let me ask you this. It's your play, right?"

"Yeah, so?" Chase asks.

"So, Harper's right, you wrote the kiss in. If it's bugging you that much, go change it."

"Change it?" Chase asks.

"Write a different ending," Michael says.

"Have them hug like good Christian children."

Chase finally gets it, and breaks out into a huge grin. "I can get rid of the kiss!"

"Yeah!" I say, pretending I hadn't known this all along.

"That's what we're saying!" Michael adds.

"Michael, you, my friend, are a genius in short pants! Harper, I forgive you for associating with Logan!" Chase hands Michael his Blix and walks away.

"I have my moments," Michael says while drinking what's left of the drink.

"You'll have a moment to spend in detention if you don't hurry up," I tell him, running off to class before I'm late.

The next time I see chase, he's sadly telling me that Fletcher refused to change the play. "So they still have to kiss!" He complains.

I hand him a Blix, deciding he has had a rough enough time. "Thanks," he sighs. "You know, if Logan doesn't want to quit..." he stares at me expectantly.

"I haven't tried to make him quit, and I'm not going to," I say, sternly.

"Fine, I'll just have to talk to Zoey," he storms off to meet with the blonde, and I decide to talk to Logan, although not to convince him to quit.

I arrive at the boy's dorm and find Logan reading his script. "What's up, Harp?" I sit down next to him and fiddle with my backpack zipper.

"Nothing," I find him staring. "Sorry, that was rude. How are you?"

He shrugs. "I've been so busy being a good actor that I haven't thought about it."

"Oh, shut up," I say. "Logan, can I ask you something?" He nods and puts his script down.

"Shoot."

"Are you doing this play so you can kiss Zoey?"

He sits quietly, but breaks down the longer I stare at him. "Yeah, I'm doing it so I can kiss a hot girl, what's your point?"

I scoff, "my point is that it's wrong, I mean you don't even care about the play and Chase wrote it but he gets pushed out because you want to kiss someone? Seriously?"

"So?" He asks me, "is that so bad? You're my friend, why do you care more that he's happy instead of me?" I stand up and grab my backpack.

"Maybe because I've seen how you treat girls and I think Zoey deserves better!"

His face twists and I feel bad at what my words may imply. "Why are you even my friend then?" He points at his door, "just leave!"

"Fine!" I storm out and go to find Chase, hoping that someone who gets what I'm feeling will calm me down.

I end up talking to Chase until it's time to sleep, and almost ask to get out of doing the play, so I won't have to be with Logan at all, but I don't. Instead, I wind up in the theatre as planned, wearing a swimming costume and a rubber ring. We begin the play and I watch as the play progresses.

"You think I'm incredibly cute?"

"I incredibly do."

The kiss scene is coming up and I watch as Logan gives Zoey a necklace, which she drops. It's not in the script and I watch as her face changes while they're bent over to pick it up. I realise when she begins to be clearly angry with him, that she's snapped out of her weird crush.

"Can I kiss you?" He asks, and she doesn't respond. He leans in to whisper to her, and the audience get restless. "I said, can I kiss you?"

"No," she says, and I hide my smile.

"What? Are you crazy?"

"Why do you even want to kiss me?" She says, folding her arms, going way off script and leaving Logan floundering for a response.

"Uh, cause I think you're really special?"

Her improv keeps going, "oh, well, I guess you think that hula girl is really special too, cause I know you tried to kiss her!" Nicole is confused at her character being involved, suddenly.

The audience are loving it. "What? No, I didn't!" He says.

"Hula girl?" Zoey asks.

"Oh," Nicole says, and begins to play along. "Um, yes. It's true. That lifeguard did try to kiss me, on the lips."

"Wait, wait a minute-"

"Yeah, you thought you were gonna kiss me, but guess what, Mr Lifeguard, you're not, cause you're a jerk. And this alien girl doesn't kiss jerks." She drops the necklace and walks off, and I'm fighting to keep from laughing.

"Where are you going?"

"Back to Zorkquasia! Zorka out." The audience applaud, as they think the play went to plan, and I go over to Logan.

"Told you, you're a jerk." He frowns at me. "But I only said Zoey deserved better because she thought you weren't one. You deserve someone who likes you despite your jerkiness, not because they think you're someone else."

He looks at the emptying seats. "So you don't think I'm undeserving of love?"

"I never said that!" I tell him. "And I'm sorry for fighting with you, I just had a lot of people talking to me about you and none of it was really working together."

"I'll forgive you," he says. "If you kiss me?" He grins, hopefully, and I laugh.

"Sure," I kiss him on the cheek and he smiles. "I'm glad you're my friend, Logan."

"Me too."
