《The Monster With A Soul - Dwayne (Lost Boys)》Chapter Six

Christine does not remember much from the previous night. She wakes up in Star's bed, the sunlight peering through the cracks in the ceiling. The colors around her were more vivid. Every little detail seems to stick out more to her. She asks Dwayne, who is still watching over her, to turn away as she gets up. She goes to get dressed, but when she looks in the mirror, she can see through herself. What happened?

Christine throws some clothes on, so many questions rushing through her mind. When she was completely clothed, she tapped Dwayne's shoulder.

"What did you do to me?" she asks, grabbing him by the shoulders.

"It was your choice," Dwayne replies. "You took the bottle and chugged it. I tried to stop you, but it was too late."

"Fix me!" she commands, horrified at her translucent reflection. "I don't want to be like you!"

Dwayne does not answer her. Christine groans in frustration. She flops down on her bed, closing her eyes.

"I can't," he says. "I don't know how. But, you'll get used to it. It's a lot of fun."

"Fun? You think killing is fun? You're a madman!"

"Hey!" he jokingly says, pretending to be offended. "I've been called worse. But now that you're a vampire-"

"Don't call me that!"

"Now that you're...one of us, maybe it's time for some new clothes."

Dwayne digs in Star's drawers. He pulls out a black undershirt, dark jeans, and a leather jacket. She gets changed into them, looking at herself in the mirror.

"Wait a second," he tells her, looking through the makeup drawer. He pulls out an eyeliner pencil, and holds her face as he draws the eyeliner on. He takes a step back from her, looking her up and down. "Perfect."

Paul and David call for Christine and Dwayne from the lobby. They join them. David had a sly grin on his face, one that Christine did not like. Paul examines Christine.

"Ooh," Paul jokes, pointing at her. "I like the new look. I like this Christine a whole lot more."

"Stop flirting with her and let me talk!" David yells. "We found Michael's house. One of those little punks who killed Marko is his brother. Max went over there last night, and both of Christine's brothers were there. They tried to expose him, but it obviously didn't work. This is our one shot tonight. If we catch them off guard, then we'll have three easy kills."

Paul and David exchange smirks, excited to get revenge for their lost friend. Christine was horrified. She knew that this would be her brothers last living day, and she could not see them or prevent it from happening. She turns away from the boys, going back to her room. Dwayne goes after her.

Dwayne does not ask Christine if she was okay, of course he knew the answer. She wants him out of the room, but cannot bring herself to speak. Dwayne sits on her bed next to her, and puts his hand on her back. He tries offering comfort to her, and she wants to accept it, but the situation seems too dark for any little bit of light.

"Why are you here?" she asks, wiping her tears. "Clearly, my feelings don't matter, so why are you trying to help me?"

"I feel bad," he admits. Christine sits up, staring into his eyes. "I...don't know what it's like to have people that care about me."

"What about your gang?"

"They could care less about having me around," Dwayne replies. "I didn't want to be one of them, at first."

"Go on," Christine says, suddenly interested.

"I had a family. I had a daughter, Emma. I had a beautiful wife, who's name is Meredith. I had everything I could ever want. I found myself with David and Max, who were the only two vampires at the time. They convinced me that the blood in the bottle was some fancy wine, and I couldn't escape. I forced myself out of my daughter and wife's life, otherwise I may have killed them. My wife has been dead for twenty years, and my daughter is probably in her forties."

Tears prick Dwayne's eyes. Christine opens her arms to him, taking him into a warm embrace. This is exactly what she had feared becoming one of them. She would have to give up everything she ever loved and leave everything from her past life behind.

"If you could go back," Christine starts. "Would you change anything?"

"Probably not," Dwayne replies. "I mean, I've experienced something other people never will. I like being a vampire. Life is so much easier. I miss my wife, but I've gotten over it."

Dwayne puts his head on her shoulder, biting his lip as he swallowed back the crying. He had clearly been holding on to these feelings for a long time, leaving them un-dealt with.

"You don't have to do this," Christine suggests. Dwayne pulls away from her their hug, pacing the room. "We can get away from here. You don't have to live this life!"

"I have no choice!" he shouts. He takes a second to collect himself, lowering his voice. "They have found me before. I won't be able to get far. But I like my life. Here, I don't feel powerless."

Christine stands up, putting her hand on his shoulder. He begins to get upset again, taking her in his arms. After a moment, Dwayne pulls away from their hug, then kisses Christine on the forehead.

"You're a good one Christine," he tells her. "Don't let those guys out there make you think otherwise."

Christine smiles at him. She did not know why Dwayne was being so kind to her, but she did not mind. She felt she at least had one place, one person, that she found comfort in. And in this situation, comfort was in short supply.
