《Learn How To Love》Face Masks, Selfies, And Static

"Will you stop moving?" Steven laughed while he applied the sheet mask to your face. You couldn't get it to lay down quite right, so you asked him for help. Now, you couldn't sit still with his face so close to yours. You sat on the edge of the bathtub bouncing your leg as Steven leaned over you- gently holding your chin while he got the mask into place. He had enough of your bouncing when he almost poked you in the eye.

"How are you going to achieve perfect, glowing, and 'deliciously dewy' skin if you don't stop moving?" Steven stepped back.

"I'm trying," you laughed nervously.

Steven leaned back in and pressed his hand down on your knee to stop your leg from bouncing. You swear you felt your heart skip a beat.

"And... there," Steven finished applying your mask and gave the tip of your nose a light tap with his finger. "You look terrifying."

While Steven put on his own sheet mask, you walked over to the mirror to see yourself, and sure enough, you looked like the world's scariest giraffe. You chuckled at your reflection, but laughed even harder when you saw Steven's panda mask- the stuff of nightmares.

"Okay, it says to leave these on for 15 minutes," Steven said, setting a timer on his phone. "But in the meantime..." he stood by your side in front of the mirror, "mirror selfies!"

You laughed and posed for the pictures with Steven- making endless goofy faces beneath the masks- until the timer sounded and it was time to take them off.

You sighed in relief as you and Steven peeled off the face masks. You had missed having a face that didn't strike terror in one's heart.

Steven started rubbing the excess moisturizer into his face with circular motions. You copied him, hoping it wasn't too obvious that you didn't know what you were doing.

"Well, I feel prettier," Steven said, batting his eyelashes jokingly.

"Ugh, I missed my face," you stared at yourself in the mirror. "I love looking like a human."

"You know, I bet they make the masks so scary to trick your mind into thinking you're ugly," Steven said. "Makes you wanna buy more."

"You sound like Ronaldo," you laughed.

"Ronaldo has been right before!"

"Right, right... 'snerson,'"

"Ronaldo has also been... wrong before!"

You both laughed while leaving the bathroom, abandoning the nightmarish masks in the trash can.

You walked into the living room and inhaled deeply though your nose, the smell of fresh cookies filling up your senses.

"Mmm," Steven sighed, "smells like the cookies are done," he smiled.

You slid on some oven mitts and pulled the cookies out from the oven- not burning yourself this time. The cookies baked perfectly- each a warm golden brown, with crisp darkened edges.

With zero hesitation, Steven reached out to take a cookie, but you smacked his hand away.

"They literally just came out of the oven, Steven!" You exclaimed. "Be careful!"

"Okay, okay," Steven chuckled, "I guess I just got a little excited."

"Yeah, no kidding," you took off the oven mitts after placing the tray of cookies on the counter. "No touching," you warned Steven, "for... at least half an hour."

"You're the boss," he held up his hands.

You smiled; "Whatever, let's just... go watch a movie or something." You talked fast when you were flustered.

"Okay," Steven smiled. He thought you were so cute. "TV's in my room," he cocked his head in the direction of the stairs. "Come on."

You followed Steven upstairs to his room, not quite knowing what to expect. Steven seemed like the kind of guy who'd have posters and merchandise of all his favorite things, and have some clutter but remain mostly organized. But he's also been nothing but full of surprises since you met him. For all you knew, his room could be a giant shrine to Onion.

Luckily, it wasn't.

Steven welcomed you into his room- a warm and cozy space- with pictures and souvenirs he'd collected throughout his life that made his room look like his own space. His headboard, that doubled as a shelf, held books, a statue, a few pictures, some tissues...

SOME TISSUES.

You moved on from the thought just as quickly as you had landed on it.

On his walls were a painting of... cherub(?) Steven and Garnet, a Sadie Killer and the Suspects poster, and a giant star above his bed- which, looked super comfortable.

Steven threw himself onto the bed and sank into the comforter, confirming your assumption. You sat next to him and melted into the mattress.

"So... comfy..." you laid back, parallel with Steven.

"Mhm..." he muffled a reply, face down on the bed. You laughed and flipped onto your stomach, turning your head to face Steven.

"Are you sleepy already?" You asked.

"Mm," Steven grunted.

"But what will I ever do without Steven?" You lamented dramatically. "How am I to go on?"

"Mmhm"

"Sometimes... I can still hear him," you whispered to the sky.

You waited for Steven to respond. When he didn't, you leaned over his back to grab the TV remote. You couldn't tell if he was actually asleep, or if he was just being dramatic, but you turned the TV on anyway.

You flipped through the channels until some corny soap opera came on.

"If you don't tell your step mom's sister's daughter to stay away from my husband, I'll tell everyone what you did. You'll never get another job in the PTA ever again."

You laughed at the TV quietly, as you didn't want to wake up Steven. Even though part of you was mad that he fell asleep so early, the other part of you knew that it was pretty late and he needed some rest.

"You wouldn't dare-"

Suddenly, the TV erupted into static- flashing back and forth between black and white specks and the show you were watching. Before you could fiddle with the remote or check on the TV, it started showing actual images again.

But... this didn't look like what you were watching before.
