《Champagne》The Best Years of My Life

Mr. L yawned, taking a look at the clock on the wall, before stretching and getting up out of bed. The sun would be rising in about thirty minutes. He quickly brushed his teeth and got dressed, before taking one last look at it all.
It was hard to believe that he spent ten years here. Most of his life had been spent in this place. He was going to miss it, to tell himself the truth. He'd miss Oliver's funny remarks, he'd miss the opening and closing the shop, everything. But you gotta move on.
He grabs everything he needs, then steps outside, closing the door for the last time, locking up the shop.
Mr. L looks down at the young girl in the sky they're standing on. She offers a beautiful little smile.
He smiles back at her, and, for a moment, he looks out behind her, imagining Oliver, Timpani, Blumiere, and Dimentio all standing there.
"Dad... are you alright?" She asks as Mr. L looks out behind her with a longing expression.
"Yeah..." He breaths. "I think... no, I know, that it's the people who I surrounded myself with who made my life so worthwhile," He sighs. "But, as I said. You gotta move on. Who's gonna miss you when you're gone?"
"Do you regret it? Your choice?" She questions.
He pauses, before smiling and letting out a breath.
"No. I don't. But still, when it's all done, you can't help but wonder what you're leaving behind. What you're giving up to get to where you're going. What you're passing by. Most of all, I knew I'd miss the smiles on their faces when I saw everyone in the morning, giving them their cups of coffee."
He smiles and closes his eyes. The hydrants are open... cool breezes blow...
He lets out a content sigh as the morning approaches.
The hydrants are open... cool breezes blow...
It's a good morning.
He opens his eyes and smiles. It won't be long now!
"Hey," Dimentio's voice calls from behind him, causing him to jump a little.
"Dimentio?" Mr. L questions, when the jester holds out his hand.

"You got a minute?" Dimentio asks, an almost desperate look in his eyes.
Mr. L pauses, looking at the sky, then back at Dimentio. "Um, yeah... "
"Then follow me," Dimentio says, grabbing L's arm and pulling him through town.
Mr. L, though confused, enjoys walking past everything one last time, taking it all in. When he first came here, he thought it was gross and ugly, but now, he didn't see as many flaws. He didn't hear as many fights. It almost felt like a new town.
"Where are we going?" Mr. L asks when Dimentio shushes him.
"You'll see."
He brings him up to his house and lets him in, before turning and smiling. "I need you to close your eyes.
"My eyes?" Mr. L questions. "Why?"
"Just do it," Dimentio pleads. Mr. L smiles a confused smile, raising an eyebrow, before obeying and shutting them.
Dimentio smiles then grabs his hands and leads the man in green up to the roof, where the sun is just starting to rise. "Alright, don't look until I tell you," Dimentio whispers, letting go and taking a few steps back, so he's standing in front of the sunrise.
"Can I open them now?" Mr. L asks.
"Not yet," Dimentio replies, nodding over at Oliver. Oliver gives a thumbs up.
"Okay, now," Dimentio says.
Mr. L slowly opens them... then gasps.
The entire floor of the roof had been painted to look like the night sky. It's like he's standing on top of space. It's incredibly detailed. It looked like it was professionally painted.
He's standing on the sky.
And the sun rose behind Dimentio. The stars are still in the sky, but the sky is a mix of purple, pink, and orange, with Dimentio standing in front of it.
"What is this?" Mr. L asks.
"Oliver said..." Dimentio starts, holding his hands behind his back. "That you wanted to see the world. Well... this is my world."
Mr. L slowly looks over at Blumiere, Timpani, and Oliver, who are all standing off to the side. Oliver giggles and points down at the art. "Mom and Dimentio did most of the painting, but Dad and I painted that rocketship!" He giggles.

Mr. L lightly laughs and looks over at a small childish-looking painting of a run-down rocket ship in the corner of the entire mural.
"Son, I think the rocketship is probably the worst part of this entire thing..." Blumiere mumbles, when Oliver shushes him. "What are you talking about?! It looks awesome!"
"Shh, guys." Timpani giggles.
Mr. L offers a warm smile, then looks back at Dimentio. "You did this last night?"
"...No," Dimentio replies, gesturing to everyone else. "WE did. I thought... it was finally time to stop pushing my family away."
He pauses, then looks over at Blumiere. "I... never knew my real family, so you were always the closest thing I had. Even after all that had happened, whenever I heard the word family, you would come to mind." He admits, before looking back at Mr. L.
Mr. L just waits in silence.
"...He hates it," Blumiere says, defeated.
"No no, I think he's just forming an artistic opinion," Oliver corrects, slightly worried.
Mr. L waits another moment before finally speaking. "Well..." Mr. L finally says. "There goes my flight."
".....What?!" Dimentio asks.
Mr. L slowly smiles and turns to Oliver.
"...Oliver, there's been a slight change of plans. You still got a job. Go down and run fast. Find the banker and tell him I want my shop back," Mr. L starts, a hopeful look forming on everyone's faces. "Go ahead and tell the whole block I'm staying. This isn't a joke! Go!"
Oliver excitedly nods, before quickly running down.
"W-what about your dream?!" Dimentio asks when Mr. L grabs his hands.
"My dream? Dimentio, I'm already living it!" He beams. "I wanted to see the world, well look what's in front of us!"
Dimentio lightly laughs as Mr. L smiles and looks into his eyes, talking faster and faster "I got everything I need to be happy. Who knew that it was all right here? My life was already complete! I'm home! This place brings out the best in me. In us. I-it's not the place. It's the people. I found my sky, I've been standing on it this whole time!"
The hydrants are open. Cool breezes blow.
"I'm home," Mr. L beams, pulling Dimentio closer as the jester smiles and happily laughs.
"I've been home! Home is where the heart is, and my heart is with all of you! It's in this town, which isn't perfect, but it's mine!" Mr. L breathes, before turning and looking at Blumiere. "My heart is in the shop, cleaning windows and talking with your son. It's in the coffee I give you every morning! It's in the stars I see every night! It's here! I'm home!"
Dimentio chuckles and wraps his arms around Mr. L, smiling up at him.
"You're home."
______
The scene changes, as Mr. L and the young girl, were still standing in the sky, but they were no longer surrounded by darkness as the sun rose over the horizon.
"So you see," Mr. L explains. "I... had always thought that the best years of my life were in the future. Who knew that I was already living them..." He chuckles.
This is when Dimentio comes up to the roof as well. "Are you still out here storytelling?" He asks.
Mr. L shrugs. "I'm just explaining what a petit rêve is."
"Well, you've been out all night!" Dimentio points out.
"Dad said I could!" The girl yells, pointing at Mr. L.
"That is true. Since we had to wake up early to see Oliver off to college anyway," Mr. L adds.
"Well, we better get going. His plane takes off in an hour." Dimentio sighs, holding out his hand. "Come on, Hope."
Hope quickly stands up and takes his hand, and he leads her off the painted night sky and down into the house, but not before looking back at Mr. L and smiling.
Mr. L lightly laughs, before following, stepping off the sky as well, as the sun rises over the horizon, bringing change with it.
Bringing forth a new day.
