《The Curious Case of Danielle Parker》twelve

I woke up the next morning feeling pretty damn good. I don't know if it was Estelle's silk sheets, or just the food coma I'd fallen into the previous night, but damn that was a good sleep. The best I'd had in months.
I sat up, admiring the view from Estelle's giant window.
Wait.
I don't remember going to her room. Last thing I remember was some crappy chick flick and caramel popcorn.
Weird.
Estelle wasn't in the room, so I got up and washed my face in the bathroom. I was expecting to look like crap, full of breakouts and bloating after the gorging last night. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised - my skin was clear and fresh looking, and my stomach was in its normal state. Awesome!
I found my way downstairs, where there was a note on the kitchen bench.
Danielle,
I am SO sorry, but I got called into work early this morning. Please don't hate me for abandoning you - I'll make it up to you!
Help yourself to any food and clothes, and when you're ready to go home Levi will drive you. Just knock on the door at the end of the hall (he won't bite).
Sorry again!
E xx
My stomach dropped. She so would do this to me. I knew that Alex was working till late tonight, so I really had no other way to get home besides Levi. Surely he had better things to do than drive me home. He seemed like a busy guy.
Sighing, I went back upstairs and changed into fresh clothes. Grabbing my school bag, I headed down the hall. However, I got stuck at the door. I didn't want to go into Levi's room, that was way too intimate. I could hardly handle seeing him in the kitchen, let alone the place where he sleeps...and changes...

Mentally kicking myself for being so stupid, I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. Holding my breath, I waited, hearing sounds of shuffling coming from inside. Then the door opened, and there was Levi.
I completely forgot what I was asking him, why I was there, who I was. His hair was ruffled and he obviously hadn't shaved in a day too long, but damn that boy was beautiful.
"Uh..." I managed to get out, like an idiot.
"Morning," he smirked at me, not making any effort to help me out.
I blinked, cleared my throat and pulled my eyes away from his. If I focused on a non-eye area, maybe I could get a few more words out. The cheek seemed like as good a place as any.
"Hi, uh, Estelle said you'd drive me home... But if you're busy, honestly don't worry. I can walk. Or wait. You wouldn't even know I'm here. You know what, I'm just going to go." Awesome. Goes from unable to speak to unable to stop speaking.
He looked amused. "It's cool, I'll drive you home."
"Are, are you sure?"
"Definitely, I need a break anyway." He gestured in front of him, and I jumped into action. I've never been so self conscious of how I walked than when I led the way down the hallway.
Once outside, he led me towards a black sports car. Of course he'd have a nice car. I hesitated as he held the door open.
"It's just a car," he said. A flash of something negative washed over his face. He was probably losing patience with me, and fair enough. The guy was busy, and here I was wasting his time. I hurried into the car, and he shut it behind me.

Let me tell you, the car smelled freaking amazing. My senses were going crazy as he slid in next to me, and I was once again fighting very hard to appear normal.
The car revved beautifully, and we were off. He drove quickly, confidently, but I felt very safe.
"So, busy at work?" I break the silence, wincing at how lame I sound even to myself.
His mouth turned up slightly. "You could say that."
We were on the highway now. He had one hand on the steering wheel, the other resting on the gearstick. Casual and confident, it was no wonder I found him almost intoxicating.
"Estelle said you run the family business. That's pretty insane, considering how young you are." Okay, good. Making conversation. Slightly insulting his life choices, but at least I was trying.
He was quiet, looking like he was figuring out what to say. "I didn't really have a choice, but I don't mind. It's a very rewarding job. And I'm not that young." That voice... I almost forgot to pay attention to what he was saying.
I nodded and made a noise of acknowledgement. "Well, how old are you then?"
"Guess," he smirked.
I had an excuse to stare at him now. I pretended I was analysing his features for age for a few seconds, but really I was just giving myself a break from avoiding his stare. "25."
"Okay no need to wound my ego. I'm 22 in a few months."
I laughed, shaking my head. "Sorry. But to be fair that question almost always sets the other person up for failure."
"No way, I would have guessed you were 18 right off the bat."
"Hey I'll take that. Most people guess like 16. I have a baby face," I chuckled, beginning to feel more at ease. This was nice.
He looked at me like I was crazy. "You have anything but a baby face." That came out almost defensively, and just like that he looked mad, and then shut off the openness he'd allowed to seep through.
Great. That lasted a while. I'd somehow managed to offend him.
The rest of the drive was silent, and I was almost dying by the time he pulled into Alex's driveway. He shut off the engine, and kept staring straight ahead.
"Well, thank you for the ride," I said awkwardly. He nodded, hands tense around the steering wheel.
Sighing in frustration, I got out of the car and shut the door. I was almost to the door of my house when he called my name. He jogged towards me, and I stared at him in confusion.
"You left your phone."
"Oh. Thanks," I said in relief. "That was close."
He turned to walk away, then halfway to the car, turned back around. "You have a beautiful face."
Then he was gone, speeding up the driveway.
Needless to say, I was stunned for a solid thirty seconds, before my brain was even able to process anything that just happened.
