The red-headed worm had taken her treasure.
Special Entity Zero-One had followed as close as she dared, but the stench of the worm forbade approach. The warning tickled at the blackest deeps of her breast. A rancid crimson flower had bloomed and peppered the air with its wretched scent. It laid claim. It warned those that would intrude. And it was filled with power, and so Special Entity Zero-One writhed.

She had thought herself powerful once. She had played with the man-things in their towers of stone for a yawn. And when she had taken an interest in the man-boy Peterey, she had made him thrall. The warriors had set her aflame with their lightning sticks. They had filled the air with the black powder of war. But she had triumphed. Special Entity Zero-One had feasted on their fresh meat. Blurb had reclaimed her prize.
[ hAtE ]
The sound left her involuntarily. It bubbled off from her rippling grey flesh as the worm appeared. Blurb had felt their watch, had searched for their stare, and here they announced themselves. Blurb had been safe in the man-boy's den, but the red-headed worm followed elsewhere. Tireless. Emotionless. And so powerful.
[ wHAt rudeness to oFFER up to yOUR big siSTER ]
The alley was cast in shadow, but Blurb watched as the worm manifested itself in an ill-formed slab of human meat. Teeth, and a mouth to hold them, bubbled out from the folds of flesh, and spoke.
"HavE you cOMe here TO SuLk?" the slab asked, and Blurb's form pulsed with frustration. It wanted to crush, to devour, to destroy, but a fear kept its claws at bay.
[ giVe bACk ]
"WhaT waS tHaT?" the slab asked, and the disembodied mouth shifted into a human grin. "buBle bUbbLe buBble. That iS whaT yoU SounD liKe."
[ hAaAatE ]
Blurb almost pounced. Her vision went crimson as it understood the mockery. The worm was so much unlike Blurb now. They had evolved. They had grown, and it filled Special Entity Zero-One with bottomless shame.
"YourS no lONger," the slab said, and Blurb felt a stench roil off its flesh.
She looked around, suddenly alert, and saw that the alleyway slowly dripped and filled with a black ichor.

"anD I wilL erAse youR puTRid smELl."
The black ichor sprang to life, no longer a slow dribble down the alleyway walls.
Blurb fled. She slank away like a wounded dog as the black converged on the slab of tooth and mouth.
When next Blurb looked, the worm had taken on its human skin. Red-headed, with an imp's face that drove Blurb near to violence.
"You are done," the girlchild said with a sneer. "Take your eggs and leave. Or I will feAst on you and yours."
And from within the girlchild's left eye, the worm shot out like a spear. The movement was faster than the man-things' lightning sticks, and Blurb cried out in wretched pain. The worm chewed and clawed a hole through their flesh with a violent ease.
"RotTen," the girlchild said as the worm retreated back into her left eye. It spat out a slimy wad of Blurb's flesh.
Special Entity Zero-One fled. There was no thought to the action. The overwhelming difference between the two of them brokered no time for plan or shame. Special Entity Zero-One shed most of the weight they had acquired in the days with the human. A smaller target and less meat to carry around.
If the red-headed worm gave pursuit, there was no outward indication. They remained erect in the middle of the alleyway, their only gesture an enthusiastic wave.
