《The Church's dog, the Free One》Volume 1 Chapter 25 First Job

Jack had been working with Livley for a few days now, even though working with the girl was fun he had realized that paperwork was incredibly boring.
He was not made to stay in place, he was a fighter, an investigator and an adventurer, not an administrator or a secretary.
Good thing, he had met with the Sin Clearing Brigade unit’s captain and he had been told that he would be getting a job soon.
The man he had met wasn’t very friendly, truly he seemed to hate the job he had.
Jack was quick to compare the Team’s Captain to the Vice-Captain, one seemed to appreciate what he was doing while the other was bored of his.
But when he shared his observations with Livley, she had said that the Captain was actually very invested in his role of Captain.
Jack didn’t get this impression, but Livley had been working for far longer than he had in Glor’s Sin Clearing Brigade.
Earlier today, the kid had been called to the armory to choose yet another artifact, he felt like he would become a Gemophile if this trend of getting new artifacts continued.
As such he had entered the Sin Clearing Brigade’s armory and had chosen a ring as it would be easy to hide in plain sight and it would blend itself perfectly with Jack’s current persona.
This ring had a yellow gemstone embedded in a silver shank, the gem was Vespa Yellow Tourmaline.
It had been made by a skilled craftsman who had been able to transfer some of the Vespa Yellow Tourmaline’s properties to the user, as such the ring acted as a Chus reserve for the wearer.
It was a pool of Chus that could be used to fuel spells and cultivation whenever the user felt like it.

The downside of the ring was that the conversion was not balanced, the filling of the ring needed more Chus than what you would be able to store.
If one were to divide a Pathseeker’s Chus reserves into parts, a rank 5 Noga-level such as Jack would have about one hundred parts.
The ring’s conversion rate is one part for five (1:5), it would take Jack to put his entire Chus reserves in the ring seventeen and a half times.
Keep in mind that the use of a small attack such as a Chus flash takes about 3,125 parts.
Spells will quickly drain a Pathseeker’s reserves, Jack’s own creation (Lynch’s Legacy: Retribution of Pain by Illumination, Light Path) is a different type of spell as it takes as much Chus as the user is willing to spend.
For example; When Jack attacked the woman torturer, he had been willing to dump all of his Chus (100 parts) in the spell, which gave the special spell more power to correctly use the pain that he had been inflicted during the year he had spent in prison.
That is why Chus storage artifacts are important even if the conversion of Chus is not advantageous mathematically, in a fight having the Chus reserves of a rank 10 Noga was very advantageous.
As such, Jack had dumped all of his Chus reserves in the ring and had been able to fill it with 20/350 Chus parts.
Late in the afternoon, he was called to the Captain’s office. Once he entered he felt the cold atmosphere of the room.
On one side there was the Captain and one of the Sin Clearing Brigade’s members, on the other was Steel Gaze Mosla the Vice-Captain.
He went to sit on the chair next to the Vice-Captain as he had felt warmth from him on the first day, he hadn’t felt the same when he had met the Captain.

A beautiful light bathed the room as the window on the roof let sunlight light up the entire office, the desk had a beautiful and intricate pattern engraved on its side.
The room was bright, the furniture were pretty and the painting on the wall depicted a beautiful scenery yet the atmosphere was chilling.
The Captain started: “Well, our new recruit has arrived. Mosla, I think we can start with this meeting now.”
“Right…” responded the Vice-Captain.
“We don’t do hazing, I’m gonna give a small task to the kid, furthermore little Stout is gonna be accompanied by Vero over there.” said the Captain.
The woman that had been called Vero nodded from the corner of the room she was in.
Jack hadn’t met her before, she must have been on a mission during the last few days.
The Captain looked at Jack before continuing: “You are going to do a small scouting mission in the worker district of Prong, it was said that there were some corpses that had been discovered in two back alleys in two different sectors of the district.”
Vice-Captain Roberto got up from his seat in a matter of seconds.
He exclaimed: “You can’t send the kid to investigate corpses, look at him he’s barely twelve!”
The Captain responded: “Look Mosla, he will have to face reality at some point, why delay?”
“You can’t do that Oliver, the kid is not ready for that kind of job, he barely had any training before and he lived in a mansion all his life.” Mosla said.
“Let’s ask the kid then, if he wants to do nothing and stay at home being useless, I won’t say anything for the first year as I agree he is kind of young.” Answered the Captain whose name Jack had just learned.
They both turned their gazes towards Jack.
The Vice-Captain spoke up first: “Tell us Stout, do you want to stay here for the time being, it’s fine as you are not even fourteen.”
Oliver took the flame: “Listen kid, I agree that you are kind of young, I myself started working in a Sin Clearing Brigade at the age of thirteen, but know that this is an easy job and you will be with Vero so you won’t be in danger at any point.”
Without thinking much Jack answered: “The last few days were kinda boring so hum… I want to do something else even if you only give me an easy job, it's okay.”
“I disagree with that decision, he is too young. Oliver I ask you to see reason for once and to stop this bullshit, please” said Mosla.
“You heard him, the kid’s choice, not mine.” answered the Captain.
Jack was puzzled, it was an easy job, why was Vice-Captain Mosla so much against him going?

The mentioned établissement is run by the formidable Barkeeper and jack of all trades Tora, who happens to have a very interesting past. Which involves more than one sinister secret... Now add to the mix a totally clueless elven girl - a mortal, not a fae- on the run. Lunara. She has unknowingly struck a deal with the devil - quite literally. Now unable to handle the consequences on her own she enters the tavern on the edge. An epicenter for magic and the only place where she might find help. She talks Moira into helping her out.
