《The Invitation》Chapter 16

Elias wrung his soaking wet jacket over the sink, stamping down a feeling of giddy excitement.

He reminded himself that the Armeshire's were always one step ahead of them, and solving this task only meant waltzing into another one.

He had ordered breakfast in his room this morning because he couldn't bear the thought of sitting in the same room as that sick lady, Loretta - only to find out by a messenger late on that: 1. He had been poisoned and 2. Loretta had left.

So he couldn't help but feel relieved and proud that the threat of poisoning was no longer looming over his head.

He put on a different jacket from his closet of all dark grey suits, and left to join everyone else for the revelry.

Leaving his room, he noticed that everyone was crowded in the hallway outside their rooms, even the new girl. She had bleached white hair and appeared to be in an intense discussion with the twins. He had been an inch away from the door when he heard her speak for the first time and realized that there was now, one more American amongst them.

Upon reaching closer to the group, Elias realized that the brat, Eliza was no where to be found, and since he had no patience for those Americans and did not wish to indulge in a conversation with them, he decided to go and look for Eliza.

How sad his life had become.

Elias walked towards her room, and just as he raised his hand to knock on the door, he saw that it was already open, and there were voices coming from inside.

Looking around and making sure that no one was watching him, Elias opened the door and creeped inside her room, hiding behind the huge sofa in the foyer.

He could make out her figure by the side of her bed, her back facing him. She thankfully had not noticed him enter, as she was too busy talking on the phone.

"Yes, yes. I know that there is a deadline, but you won't believe what I've found here. The secrets this place holds are nothing compared to the secrets my fellow friends do. Especially that man, what was his name? Ah yes, Elias. He-"

She broke off as she looked up at the clock and said, "Damn it, I need to go, but you must promise to give me more time Parrow. I can make us rich." Putting down the phone, she began to walk towards the door.

And Elias only had enough time to stumble out into the hallway before Eliza came out, all dressed up and ready for the revelry. Upon seeing him outside her door, she narrowed her stormy blue eyes at him and opened her mouth to say something, right when Nicholas came up to them.

"We are all here now I suppose. So we can go. But, might I say, you look absolutely ravishing dearest Eliza."

Eliza turned bright red and muttered something of a thanks before accepting his arm and walking towards the dining hall with him.

Watching her walk away, Elias couldn't help but breathe out a sigh of relief.

This woman was dangerous. And she was out for blood. His blood.
