《Unexpected》Fired

I bring the bowl of fresh scrambled eggs and the plate of toast to the table, setting them down. I walk right in on an important discussion.
“You need to fire her, Hunter.”
“Why? She’s done nothing wrong.”
I busy myself in the room, dying to hear who she wants fired.
“She’s sleeping with my brother!”
They’re talking about Andy! I should have guessed. Peni treats ‘the help’ like slaves. Of course she would hate if one is sleeping with her brother.
“She’s a grown adult.”
“But she’s a servant!”
“She’s my gardener and I can’t control who your brother sleeps with.”
“Just fire her!”
Hunter slams his fist down on the table.
“No. I will not fire my best gardener just because your brother can’t keep it in his pants!”
Oh snap! Peni shuts right up and I stick around in the room a little longer before walking out to the kitchen to grab a pitcher of fresh squeezed orange juice. Larry throws the last of the orange peels into the garbage disposal.
“I just have to add some ice cubes and you’re good to go.”
His eyes scan my body as he dumps the bowl of round ice cubes into the pitcher. The glass feels cool and smooth in my hands as I bring it out to the table. I pour Hunter a glass before walking over to take Peni’s glass. She snarls at me.
“I can pour my own damn drink.”
Wow. The future queen of the house is getting worse as the days go by. No surprise.
Following her orders, I set the pitcher down next to her, excusing myself. As I walk out of sight, I hear Hunter’s voice.
“You will stop acting like a child, Peni. My staff are here to help and you will treat them with respect.”

I smile, satisfied. Hunter’s sticking up for us. Maybe he isn’t so bad after all. Maybe he’ll leave Peni when he finds out I’m carrying his child.
