《YOUTH ⇢ BENNY WEIR》eight

The next day, Sophia and Sarah were stood at the front of the school when they saw a brand new Erica walk in, followed by Jesse and his group of vampires.
Sophia's jaw dropped at the sight of her: she was wearing a short, black pencil skirt with tights, a grey shirt with lace gloves, a choker and her hair was down. Not to forget, she was wearing makeup.
Sarah, however, narrowed her eyes at the girl, disgusted when she saw her outfit.
"Hey, girls. What's wrong? Sarah, you're looking a little underfed." Erica said to them.
"What happened to you?" Sophia scoffed.
"You know, like the best thing ever! It's not to late to join us, Sarah. Perhaps you could join us too." She grinned at Sophia, who scoffed again. "What? We can be best friends forever."
"Never." Sarah shot back.
Jesse chuckled. "You're making the biggest mistake of your life, well, what's left of it."
"Isn't that cute?" Erica asked, playing with Jesse's hair. "I think she still has a thing for you."
Sophia rolled her eyes.
"I've got something for both of you and it's made of wood and really sharp." Sarah retorted.
Jesse laughed. "Sarah, you've been replaced." He smirked before turning to Erica and kissing her.
The two girls gagged and had to look away to avoid throwing up.
"Oh, you're still coming to the Dusk premier though, right? BFF." Erica smiled, once the two had pulled away.
Sarah didn't respond, she turned her back and walked away. Sophia took a step closer to Erica. "You shouldn't have walked into school so confidently wearing those shoes, BFF." She mocked her. Sophia flashed her a fake smile before following Sarah.

"Hey, what's up?" Sophia asked Benny and Ethan, kneeling down.
"You're not gonna like this..." Ethan said, biting his lip.
"What?" Sarah asked.
"We have to go see Dusk III." Ethan said, slowly.
"You've got to be kidding me!" Sophia groaned, getting up.
"Trust me, I don't want to go just as much as you do." Benny said, getting up as well.
"Well, we better start practising." Ethan sighed.
"Practising for what?!" Sophia almost yelled, annoyed that she had to attend the premier.
"Fighting the vampires," Benny grinned, taking hold of her hand. "duh!" He said, before running off with Ethan and Sarah, his grip still on Sophia.
Normally, Sophia would snatch her hand away immediately, but a small part of her that was growing actually liked the fact their hands were held.
Please don't tell me I'm falling for this dork. She thought to herself.

After school the four retreated to the Morgan household and gathered equipment into the garden.
Benny and Ethan were struggling to get fence posts free using hammers and Ethan had hit his thumb. Sarah then appeared and used her vampire strength to pull out the fence posts within a second and passing them to the boys and one to Sophia.

Sophia helped Benny set up some hay stacks and a scarecrow to practise on. Once they set it up, Ethan was the first to try and attack the scarecrow.
He ran for the first hay stack but tripped over it and face-planted, causing his sister to laugh. She took the fence post out of Benny's hand and rolled her eyes. "Please," She murmured, pushing her younger brother out of the way before taking a few steps back and running at the scarecrow. She jumped onto the first haystack and jumped to the second, spinning around in the process and stabbing the fence post into where the heart of the scarecrow would be.
The three stair at her in astonishment. "How did you manage to nail that first time?" Ethan asked, his jaw ajar.
"Do you remember the fighting lessons I got when I was 13?" She grinned.
"Yeah, but I thought you hated it."
"I did. I just remembered a few moves just now - I guess they'll come in handy." She smirked at Benny, who was staring at her in awe.
Ethan followed his sister's eyes to Benny and realised the slight chemistry between the two. He hit his arm. "Still my sister." He hissed, with gritted teeth.
Ethan and Benny stood back to back shooting nerf guns at the scarecrow whilst Sarah and Sophia cheered them on.
Once Benny noticed the wide smile on Sophia's face and how her face was so lit up his heart fluttered and he lost concentration. He gave her a soft smile when Ethan turned to Benny. "Benny, you okay?"
Benny snapped out of and turned to Ethan. "Yep, sorry. I zoned out for a second." He chuckled. "Let's go!"
He ran to the side of scarecrow to where Sophia was, Ethan following him. Benny then ran past the scarecrow, shooting it as he went. Sophia laughed and took the gun from Ethan and doing the same. "Wanna help me with my aim?" She asked him.
Benny eagerly nodded and the two positioned themselves in front of the scarecrow.
"Okay, so," Benny began, standing behind Sophia and holding out her arms and lacing his fingers around hers. "you hold it like this, see?"
Sophia looked at their fingers and slowly nodded. "Yeah."
"And you see the small ring at the end of the gun?" He asked her.
"Yeah, I see it." She replied, trying not to smile at the sight of their entwined fingers in the corner of her eye.
"If you look through there, it should help you aim out a lot. But, you seem like you know what you're doing since you slayed your brother earlier with the 'stakes'." Benny grinned.
Sophia lightly laughed and nodded. "Thanks but I'm not as good when it comes to shooting. But thanks, I'll try it out."

Benny's grin was plastered on his lips as he took out his nerf gun and got ready to shoot when he realised he was out of bullets.
Sophia took a shot, it hit the scarecrow's head. "Damn!" She mumbled. "I was aiming for the chest."
Benny stared at her in awe again. "It was better than my first try - I hit Ethan!"
Sophia laughed, which made Benny's heart skip a beat. He felt extremely proud that he made her laugh.
"What's up with your gun?" She asked him, taking a step closer to look at it.
Benny shrugged. "I don't know, I think I'm out of bullets-"
Benny was cut off by Ethan, who saw him and his sister low key flirting and wanted to push Benny away, just to annoy his best-friend. He grinned as he pushed Benny to the floor and took a shot at the scarecrow, hitting it in the chest.
"Ethan!" Sophia yelled at her younger brother.
"Dude, not called for." Benny groaned, getting back up.
Sarah was kneeling down beside them laughing, whilst trying not to spill holy water on herself. She knew that Sophia and Benny both liked each-other, even though Sophia wouldn't admit it any time soon. The fact that Ethan once told her he feels sick every time he sees Benny flirting with his sister made him sick to his stomach - he couldn't imagine them together and kissing in front of him.

Later that evening, before the group were going to attend the premier, Benny asked if Sophia could come over to help gather some weapons. By weapons, he meant more nerf guns.
"Why do we need more nerf guns?" Sophia chuckled, following Benny into his room.
"Because you can never have enough nerf guns." He opened his closet and pulled out a box behind his clothes and took of the lid, revealing a bunch of nerf guns. Sophia's eyes widened at the sight of Benny's nerf gun she spray painted pink when they were younger. She remembered how surprised she was when Benny was totally fine with - she was even more surprised that Benny kept it after all these years, little did she know he only kept it because once the popularity hit Sophia, she wouldn't even acknowledge him and he wanted memories from when she used to pay attention to him.
She laughed and took it out of the box. "Remember this?"
Benny looked at it and nodded. "Yeah, those were the days." He sighed.
Benny didn't know whether to tell Sophia or not. He knew they had enough nerf guns and now that Sophia was beginning to hang out with him, he felt a little more confident about telling her how he felt. Although he was aware that Ethan didn't like the fact that he had a crush on his sister, he couldn't keep it a secret for much longer.
Besides, Sophia seemed a lot more highly around him, which he took as a sign of flirting.
"Sophia?" Benny asked her, fiddling with his thumbs.
She looked around, turning her attention away from the pink nerf gun full of memories. "Yeah?"
"Can I ask you something?"
Sophia smiled. "Sure, go ahead."
Benny sat down on his bed and patted the spot beside it, signalling for her to sit down, which she did. "What's up?"
"Why did we drift away as we grew up? I mean, I know I was closer with Ethan but we were such great friends." Benny began.
"We still are though, aren't we?" Sophia asked.
Benny nodded. "Yeah. But you know what I mean, we did drift apart."
"Yeah, I know. I guess I just got caught up with popularity but now it doesn't bother me as much, I guess."
Benny smiled, happy that Sophia wasn't bothered about popularity now - perhaps her considering dating him wouldn't be a negative thought anymore.
"Obviously it does still mean a little something to me because reputation is key in high school, to be honest." She laughed lightly.
Benny's smiled faded.
"What's wrong?" She asked, realising Benny was no longer smiling.
"Oh, don't worry about it. We better get these nerf guns and head back to your house - Ethan and Sarah are probably waiting." Benny replied, getting up. Sophia put her hand on his shoulder and harshly pushed him back down. "No. Tell me." She hated when people kept stuff from her.
"Sophia, it's fine, honestly."
She laughed. "Just spit it out, Benny."
Benny paused for a moment before pressing his lips against hers for no longer than a second. Once he pulled away the two stared at each-other with wide eyes.
Suddenly Sophia's reputation hit her. She couldn't deny she liked Benny but what would happen if everyone found out they were together? No one would speak to her, she'd loose all her friends apart from Sarah because Benny's labelled as a nerd, and dating nerds when you're extremely popular in high school isn't good. When she previously said that it didn't bother her that much anymore, she truly meant it. But then Benny kissed her and she realised what he was leading up to.
"I-I-" Sophia stuttered, not knowing what to say. Benny was about to speak before she cut him off. "We should... go." She said, flashing him an awkward smile and picking up her nerf gun.
Benny gritted his teeth and punched the bed, cursing under his breath, before following Sophia.

Many a story has spawned from these two tales. Countless retellings mixing in their own fictions. But all stories spawn with a kernel of truth to them, and the story of Davy Jones is no exception. Those who've met the legendary seaman and his ghostly ship might call him a ferryman, escorting the drowned to their respective afterlives. Others might call him a devil, meting punishment on those deserving. The true story is always slightly different. Davy Jones is a ferryman, but not one for the afterlife, as Walter finds out.
