《Jenny and the Beasts》21. Down With The Plot

3/5 updates for today August 16, 2022.

When the time to get seeds from the ape king arrived, Jenny wished she didn't have to go. The drama and death that could unfold made for a great excuse to avoid it. If only she didn't need the seeds.

Jenny resolved her will and decided that she was going to change things. It couldn't be that hard. All she had to do was grab Bai and hold onto her. All problems solved. If she succeeded, maybe Shuu would get to live. Saving a life sounded like a nice thought to her.

Still, Jenny was a realist and kept her expectations low. Jenny brought Winston and Simon with her. Sieg went hunting and Mestor held down the fort. Jenny had warned them about Rosa, in case she picked a fight with them like she did with Parker in the original.

Jenny got quite a few looks as Simon carried her along. She felt like a child being carried around, but was slowly getting used to it. Winston kept his guard up, chasing away any males that got too close. He didn't really chase anybody, all he had to do was stare at them and they backed off.

Jenny was greeted enthusiastically by the ape king. Suppressing an urge to roll her eyes, Jenny responded politely, "Thank you for passing out the seeds today. They will be very useful." Jenny went with the 'kill with kindness' tactic as no male was immune to that.

The ape king was no exception. A genuine smile adorned his face as he listened to Jenny's words. Finding an appreciative female who knew what was good for her was rare and Bard enjoyed the gratitude shown to him. "Of course. It is part of my duty. Although you have not given birth yet, you will be welcome to receive wild seeds in addition to the rice. Assuming that you would like some."

Keeping her cordial attitude was easier since the ape king was the same. "I would. Thank you for your consideration," she replied.

Bard watched Jenny through eyes of appraisal. He started to feel that the female in front of him was similar to himself. She knew how to use her words to her advantage. Bard did not disparage that, in fact, he acknowledged her. Enough that his vigilance towards the female increased. Still, he accepted the words appreciation and went about his business.

Once the ape king left, Jenny relaxed. Winston and Simon had remained silent and watched. After she made sure that they were okay, Jenny looked around the area. Her eyes caught Parker's. She guessed Bai will be coming to say hello soon.

Once Bai attached herself to Jenny's company, the later made sure that the girl did not run off on her own. When she had to use the bathroom, Jenny excused herself too, bringing Winston along with her. She was not taking any chances, but she seriously had to pee. Babies really do push right on the bladder.

After they finished their business, Jenny nervously held on to Winston's arm while looking around. She saw several tigers, but none approached them. It was the right choice to bring Winston. Winston gave her a worried look and she tried to give him a reassuring squeeze. It wasn't until they made it back to the gathering did Jenny finally relax.

Jenny glanced at Bai repeatedly as if to make sure she wasn't seeing things. Did Jenny do it? Did she change an event? Jenny didn't let the excitement get to her yet. Until they were back home, she wouldn't believe it. The seeds were all passed out and she went to leave.

"Is something wrong?" Winston asked. He refrained from questioning Jenny since they were in the presence of too many others, but now they were mostly alone. "Is there something wrong with the other female?" Jenny's intense staring at Bai did not go unnoticed.

"I... I was paranoid that something might happen today. I'm pretty sure it's okay now," Jenny answered with the truth, but not the detailed version.

"That's good," Simon released a breath he was holding. He had been too on edge to even speak. Jenny looked like she could pounce on the other female and he didn't get why.

They went on their way and Jenny couldn't help but feeling powerful. It might have been silly, but it was nice to know that she could change things with even simple efforts. Once they were home, they went through their seeds.

Winston took them and would soon go out to plant them. The men in her family would alternate to tend to the fields. They knew of the nets and brought some of Jenny's pre-made ones to deter birds. Jenny tried to pass off her scarecrow to them too. Winter had been long and boring, so she used that time to make this guy and a brother.

The males exchanged looks, but said nothing. If Jenny wanted to put the strange creation in the fields, they wouldn't tell her no. Jenny had stuck one in her own garden despite there being no seeds to protect.

Over the following weeks, the men in her family tended to the fields as well as the other duties. Jenny noted that her interference changed a lot. Since Shuu didn't die that day and Bai wasn't attacked, Rosa was not punished or sold. The tiger king still lived too.

Jenny did not know how the ape king would change his plans at this point. He needed the energy crystals to level up and Jenny did not believe he would give up on that goal. She kept her own crystals close by at all times lest she get robbed. There was no way she'd let anyone steal Winston's hard work and her safety net. She would eat them all first or have her spouses swallow them.

Jenny looked down at her protruding belly. She could feel the baby sometimes and knew it was lively without Harvey needing to tell her. Would crystals harm her baby? If it wasn't safe, she could give them all to her spouses. Hopefully, they wouldn't need to go that far.

Jenny was getting larger, but she was still able to move around well enough. She went on frequent walks and enjoyed the nature around her. Despite all the things she could worry about, she wasn't stressing out at this moment.

Jenny was doing good, no, great. She had a strong and caring family, a good friend in Harvey, and a healthy pregnancy. Her home was warm and her resources were stocked. If this was a game, she would have definitely completed all of the side quests. As for the main quests, she was effectively rewriting them.

Technically, her main quests wouldn't be the same as Bai's anyway. So Jenny was wrecking Bai's quest while achieving her own. Good for her. Bai was capable of making her own choices. If she wanted to go through with something, she could destroy Jenny's attempts in a heartbeat. Of course, Bai was not someone who went anywhere guns blazing. Since that was the case, Jenny had no trouble flipping the plot on its head.

It wasn't an exact goal of hers to ruin things, but she took Winston. That's a huge blow to the script. She might as well take advantage of that and change whatever else she wanted to. It wasn't like she would purposefully do anything terrible in the name of entertainment, so Jenny didn't feel bad. Soon, she would pull herself completely away from everything.

Since that was the case, maybe Jenny could think about where she wanted to go. Her immediate thought was somewhere close to the ocean. The merfolk won't like her because she was 'ugly,' so her safety wouldn't be comprised by them. Jenny would stay far away from Qin's tribe, thus avoiding that drama. Jenny would like to keep far away from the scorpions too if she could.

The ocean was also ideal. Jenny liked fishing, the water, and salt. She needed salt to live after all, so she definitely liked that. If she had to move somewhere, the shoreline sounded like a great place. Unless they got tsunamis here, then she would have to scratch the idea completely. If so, she would settle for a river-side home. That would be better for Sieg too.

Jenny would discuss those plans in more detail with her family. In the meantime, she was going to enjoy this walk. Some males approached her, but none could get close to her. Jenny didn't mind the interference, in fact, she was grateful for it. Courting was the last thing on her mind right now.

Despite her thoughts, Jenny appraised all those who had the guts to come close to her and Winston. It wouldn't hurt to check right? There was no telling who could end up in her family in the future. Her family would get a lot of say in the matter, but not the final one. Jenny's life was so comfortable right now because her fertility wasn't common knowledge.

If it became known in the future, Jenny's life will get much harder. Plus, there were surely unknown dangers that she wasn't accounting for. She wasn't even halfway through the novel. There is no telling what kind of important information she may have missed out on. It was better safe than sorry.

Only one male caught her eyes. He was the last one to approach. "Jenny?" Greeted Tony.

"Tony," Jenny said enthusiastically.

Winston let off his intimidating stance and Jenny spoke to Tony. He congratulated her on her pregnancy, but that was mostly it. The male went on his way and Jenny scratched her head. It seemed that Tony was just a naturally friendly guy and really didn't have an interest in her. Jenny had tossed the idea of Tony and her around in her head once more, but still didn't feel anything click. Since that was the case, Jenny didn't dwell on it. She liked that she could talk to Tony without stress or expectations anyway.

The next month was uneventful aside from a storm rolling in. Jenny knew it was coming so she immediately vouched for Curtis's words when he brought it up. Winston naturally agreed with her, but the kings hesitated. Winston was not a king and Jenny didn't push for him to do it.

Even if Jenny saw the current tiger king as lacking, he was still a tetra striped beast. If him and Winston fought, it would be dangerous. Jenny wasn't willing for Winston to take that kind of risk. Having the tiger king still in power helped put Jenny at ease. He was definitely an easier target than Winston since Sieg was a part of her family. The ape king will focus on recruiting him or offing him first, if she had to guess. If he managed to stay alive until the city fell, he could help others escape and maybe save lives that wouldn't have been saved before.

Since many hesitated, a lot of fields washed away. Jenny then understood the repercussion of her actions. Males lost their fields and wouldn't be able to provide for their females when prey became scarcer. Had Winston had the influence, he could've convinced the others to prepare. Shaking her head, Jenny steeled herself. Even knowing that, she would've still chosen the way she did.

Winston was more important to her. It wasn't like they didn't have the chance. The males did not listen to the warning and they paid for it. That was all there was to it.

The storm washed away Harvey's old village and the wolf king took the leopards into his care. Jenny was curious about how Eve was doing, but didn't insist on visiting. While the leopards were rebuilding their village, Jenny experienced a real problem. Rosa had stirred up trouble and was targeting both Jenny and Bai.

Mestor came home one day pretty roughed up. Jenny went into full alert mode and grabbed her knife. Because her heavily pregnant self could totally take on a threat, Jenny grilled Mestor for the details while looking over his wounds. Once their safety was confirmed, Jenny put away her knife and treated the scratches and bruises on Mestor's body.

Mestor explained that Rosa's males had incited Parker before running towards his hunting spot. There, the two were attacked before they could figure out their situation. Mestor had assisted Parker in fighting, but allowed the other male to land the killing blows. Although his pride didn't like it, Mestor did not want to cause Jenny any extra worries. If Rosa was going to be angry at someone for killing her males, most of her ire would be aimed at Parker.

Harvey came over some time later to check on them. He had treated Parker's wounds before coming. He was no longer needed as a guardian and was effectively kicked out. Once he determined the safety of his friend and her family, Harvey debated his next course of action.

Lately, Harvey had been hanging around Bai Qingqing and bringing her gifts. Neither Curtis nor Parker approved of him, but they did not try to kill him either. He was still hopeful though. If they called on his help once, they may do it again in the future. It brought a smile to his face to think of his beloved female, but it soured when he recalled today's events. Harvey was too weak to help ease Qingqing's worries or defend her. As he just gained his first stripe, it would be many years before he could have a chance for a second one.

Jenny watched her friend worry and joined him. This time, Mestor was fine, but next time it might not end well. What if it was Simon out there? Would he have survived it? Shivering at the scary thoughts, Jenny paced to offset some of the panicky energy.

Harvey felt a small twinge of envy watching Jenny. He knew Jenny was worried for her males and trying to come up with a way to help. He wondered if Qingqing would ever worry for him like that. He squashed the notion as soon as it surfaced. He wasn't her male and may never be, but he would love her regardless.

The family had a lengthy discussion that night. Harvey stayed to talk about their plans. They would avoid Rosa's males whenever possible. At least, Mestor, Simon, and Harvey would. Sieg and Winston could beat the crap out of them and walk away. She didn't want to suggest killing them as she wasn't that kind of person. As upset as she was, she knew that the males were only listening to Rosa.

The other part of the plan was simpler. The men would train in their free time. Sieg was the exception and had no interest in training. In fact, it was the first time Jenny saw a look of pure disgust on his face. God forbid he had to voluntarily put in effort towards something. A small smirk graced her face as she finally started relaxing.

The men hashed out the details while Jenny listened. She would've loved to contribute, but battle was outside of her expertise. It was better to leave that to the professionals.

The males agreed unanimously. In addition, Harvey would hunt with Simon. Wolves were used to hunting in groups, but Harvey couldn't say that he was. It looked like he would experience something new.

Much to Jenny's relief, Rosa did not start anything with her family again. Rosa's rage was mostly directed as Parker and Qingqing. Thanks to Mestor's incredible, gossip-gathering skills, he learned that Rosa received a reprimand from both her father and ape king. Jenny winced, feeling that it would have the opposite effect on the spoiled princess.

Jenny's spouses assured her that all would be fine and Jenny believed them. They weren't stupid and Rosa had them on high alert. Simon was cowardly in nature and had no qualms about running away. Jenny was extremely grateful for his disposition now.

Mestor was smart enough to disengage when necessary which put her at ease. Winston and Sieg had no need to fear any of Rosa's males, but Jenny made sure to warn them all about weapons. It was cautionary advice, given in case the ape king assisted Rosa and gave her males poison to use. That was how he bore responsibility for Shuu's death in the novel.

Jenny laid down that night. She tried to anyway. Her growing belly made that difficult. Sieg took the spot furthest from her like usual. Jenny looked at her arms, they were clear of any bruising. She learned the hard way that Sieg had trouble being gentle. Something as simple as lifting her up hurt her. Not much really, but that was weeks ago and Sieg had yet to touch her again. Nothing she said to him seemed to make him feel better.

Jenny never pushed him and promised him that she was fine. Jenny also had to assure her spouses that were now questioning the newest addition to the family. It was an accident and she felt like it wouldn't happen again. Sieg was repenting as far as Jenny could tell.

Jenny moved her cushions towards the sleeping behemoth of a man. He grunted, but didn't protest. Once Jenny's eyes adapted to the darkness, she looked him over. Jenny didn't understand how he was so dang tall when his beast form had such short limbs. It was like his length translated into height instead of his actual limb length.

She guessed that it would look a little strange if his torso was extra long and his limbs tiny. Stifling a giggle Jenny settled down for sleep. Sieg was no longer intimidating to her and hadn't been for a long time. Another thing she had the pleasure of noticing, was his member. He was never quick to cover it, giving her an unfortunate amount of views. Thankfully, that part was not especially big or relative to his body size. Feeling a flush coming on, Jenny diverted that train of thought and focused elsewhere.

Jenny had to pee. Even though she peed right before bed and just got comfortable. She didn't like this being pregnant thing and hoped that time would pass quicker. Jenny grunted dramatically as she lifted herself up. She wouldn't let her spouses help her with this until she absolutely had to.

Jenny went to the sandpit and sat on her makeshift toilet. It was a carved stone with a hole, curtesy of Winston. Thanks to this nifty little thing, Jenny could still do her business unassisted. A small thing that she would be eternally grateful for.
