《Whodunnit 2》Chapter 13 - Blood Cube

After discovering Mike's dead body in the pool, all the guests adjourned in the great room and decided which areas they wanted to investigate.

"Who would like to visit the crime scene?"

Jeremy, Kristina & Grace raised their hands and followed May to the outdoor pool.

"Who would like to investigate the last known whereabouts?"

Chantal, Mary & Troy raised their hands and followed Sophie out of the main resort building and down a mysterious path.

"That leaves Brett, Cecilia & Kendra. Please follow me to the morgue."

The group of Grace, Kristina & Jeremy soon arrived at the main resort pool. May left them to it and soon returned to the resort.

The first thing that the group noticed was ice. The pool was almost completely frozen over. There were even clumps of ice on the sides surrounding the pool.

"How did the pool get so frozen over?" Kristina pondered to the group as she squatted down to test how cold the pool was. Upon looking at the thermometer she saw the pool temperature was at a chilling -18 degrees.

"Shit. It's minus eighteen." Upon finding out the reading, Kristina shared it with the group.

Grace just simply shook her head. She knew her close ally in the game didn't deserve to be in that pool. Whether he froze to death, or it was a quick death, she didn't care. Mike had a family at home, and the news of his death was going to destroy his newlywed wife. It even clicked for Grace that his wife had no idea that she was now a widow.

The group quickly noticed a body-shaped hole in the pool. It was just below the surface and it didn't take any genius to realise that's where Mike's body was cut out of the pool.

"If he was cut out at that midpoint there, then the water must have frozen over only a short time after he entered the water." Jeremy made a good point on how Mike would have possibly been retrieved from the water.

Kristina was also starting to piece together clues, seeing how the pool was mostly a crimson coloured ice cube, the youngest guest theorised that Mike bled out in the pool. But what she didn't know was if that was the cause of death.

It was clear beyond the three guests that the nature of the game had finally set in. The three were hardly speaking with one-another as they investigated the crime scene. All three of them belonged to separate alliances in the resort, so they weren't going to share information with each other as that was just going to put themselves at a disadvantage.

Grace felt especially prone to not share information with Jeremy. The most well-known guest had always given the author bad vibes.

Something about Jeremy made Grace feel like he was very disturbed mentally. Out of all the guests, the ginger guessed that Jeremy would be the most likely to pull it all off.

Unbeknown to Grace, Kristina had the exact same theory for the identity of the killer. The youngest guest had always thought that Jeremy was the killer. Even when Kristina was in an alliance with the director, she didn't trust him completely.

Jeremy had also kept his suspicion for almost the entirety of the game so far that Troy was the killer. Just because he was alliance members with the athlete didn't mean that he didn't think he was the killer. Someone had to be the killer, and the most athletic guest was the most accurate guess for Jeremy.

After complete silence for almost half an hour, the bell rang.

Time was up for Kristina, Jeremy & Grace. All they found was a frozen over pool and a couple of fallen leaves from the trees surrounding the pool.

Upon Sophie the maid opening the double doors to the buffet building where the guests have their dinners each night, they were exposed to a violent scene.

Everything was smashed. The entire interior of the building looked like it had been exposed to several hurricanes at once.

The wallpaper was almost completely missing from the walls, the expensive China plates, and glasses which would be usually placed on the shelves beside were the guests ate, were all smashed. Several hundreds of pieces of China was scattered across the floor.

Other things which stood out to Chantal, Troy & Mary was that the tables were all flipped. Plus, there was a couple drops of dried blood on the floor.

"Maybe the killer and Mike had a struggle?" Mary brought up the plausible idea of the killer and Mike fighting before Mike's murder.

"Would the killer have risked Mike just running out though and exposing who the killer is then and there?" Chantal had a good counter-argument for her alliance member. If the killer was stupid enough to let Mike potentially escape, why would he/she?

The group also noticed that from where all the guests had dinner at the table, there was a small nylon rope attached to one of the corner legs. However it was very worn out, and it only took a single pull from Troy for the rope to totally detach from the table.

"So the killer tied him up?" Chantal asked the group.

Mary & Troy both shrugged.

"I guess so," Mary said, unsure of what was really the answer.

Eventually, the three moved on from the destroyed sitting area of the buffet and walked to the hallway, which you needed to walk through to get to the actual food of the buffet. However, none of them could have predicted what came next.

Mary saw it first, almost collapsing on the spot. As Chantal turned the corner she let out a loud scream. Troy stood still in fear.

There was a mountain lion, lying still on the floor.

"Let's get out of here, now!" Chantal tried to pull back the two older guests. The musician was already ready to abandon the last known whereabouts. For all she knew, the mountain lion was about to pounce and rip herself, Troy & Mary to shreds!

The group stayed still in their tracks for almost five minutes, they all thought the mountain lion was asleep (as they could see him breathing) However, Troy quickly pointed something out by looking at the animals' ribs.

"The poor guy's been starved. Look at his ribs, you can see everything. The killer has malnourished it. Troy had a love for animals, and knowing that the killer most likely deprived the mountain lion of food made him genuinely angry.

Although none of the three voice their theory, they knew what this meant. The three could obviously stem from the malnourished mountain lion that it had been deliberately starved by the killer so that once it saw the prey (Mike), it could strike and try and eat him. However, with the minimal blood at the scene, the three guests knew that it wasn't possible that the mountain lion could have killed Mike.

But, if it wasn't the mountain lion which killed Mike, then what did?

Just as the group was about to move on from the animal, the resort bell rang. Time was up for them all.

Mary & Troy took a slight sigh of relief and immediately turned around to walk out of the crime scene. However, once they reached the buffet building doors they realised Chantal was missing.

The two guests walked back around the hallway and noticed the blond was squatting by the barely alive mountain lion.

"We've got to go missy." Mary wanted to rush Chantal along, the eldest guest definitely didn't feel secure with a mountain lion on the premises-no matter how much strength that it had.

"We can't leave him to suffer like this." Chantal was barely audible as she mumbled through her defeated tone. The singer/songwriter was lightly stroking the animal, hoping that the tiny bit of comfort might put the mountain lion at ease from its most likely indescribable torment.

Troy admired Chantal's affection towards the animal. It almost made Troy feel sick at the fact that he was about to let the animal suffer at the crime scene. Without giving it a second thought, Troy grabbed a knife from the kitchen counter and squatted next to the animal with Chantal.

The two guests both gave go's stroking the animal one last time before Troy quickly stabbed the animal in the head. Troy hoped the death to the mountain lion was quick and painless.

As Chantal & Troy both stayed by the animal as it bled out, Mary stood in fear watching the two.

Mary found it inhumane that Troy had the willingness to, without a thought, grab a kitchen knife and plunge it into the animal's skull. The eldest guest also couldn't believe that Chantal said nothing as the act was going on. It only added to her recent theory that Chantal was the killer.

Eventually, Sophie had the physically pull off Troy & Chantal off the mountain lion. They were both a blubbering mess as they walked out of the crime scene. As the crying began to intensify as they all traveled back to the great room, Mary walked not too far behind the two guests, giving them looks of utter confusion behind their backs.

"Why are they more upset about the death of an animal over the deaths of the recent guests?" Mary thought to herself.

Brett, Cecilia & Kendra casually strolled into the morgue and wasted no time resting the sheet off Mike's 'body'.

However, the three of them were all astonished once they took off the sheet, to find that Mike was completely consumed in a blood cube. The police officers body was completely covered in a barely see-through cube of red. It was at this time as well that the group of three had noticed Giles hadn't of left the morgue already, and was holding three ice picks.

"You've got to be joking me?" Cecilia said once she laid eyes on the ice picks.

"Oh my god." Brett sighed.

At first the group thought about waiting for the ice to melt, however, they didn't want to waste time and started picking away at Mike's icy body.

"Remember not to stab his body, you might stab away some evidence without realising." Brett gave a good reminder to his two female acquaintances as they started picking.

It took a couple of minutes of picking for the ice to completely fall off Mike. The ice eventually started to melt by the group's feet as they started to do their version of an autopsy on Mike's body.

The first thing that the group noticed was that Mike looked extremely bloated. If the guests hadn't of known Mike before, they would have thought he had just gained an extra eighty pounds.

"How can he be so big all of a sudden?" Kendra asked the group.

"Maybe he had an allergic reaction? Bloating is something which occurs with those." Cecilia replied.

As Kendra & Cecilia chatted, Brett started to examine more of the body.

The singer decided to lift Mike's closed eye-lids just for good measure. And once he did, he found that Mike's eyes were protruding with blood. The police officers eyes were cascading with a stream of the crimson liquid.

"That's disgusting." Cecilia had to physically step back away from the body once she saw the severity of the injuries to Mike's eyes.

Apart from the eyes, the group also examined how Mike had dried sick all around his mouth. The three guests could, therefore, make a prediction that Mike was killed several hours ago, as they assumed the sick on his mouth would have washed up from being found in the pool.

The group decided to flip over Mike next and found that with most bodies after death, their bodily fluids had started to spill out of their bodies.

"I'm not touching that!" Kendra looked repulsed as she dropped the scalpel in her hand.

"Me neither." Brett had to cover his nose with his sleeve as the odour of death and other substances had started to flood the morgue.

After a while, there was nothing else that the threesome could do. They found nothing else on Mike's body to indicate what could point to a cause of death. They all had their theories, but none of them could be confirmed.

It didn't take long for the conversation of the killer to come to fruition.

"Well, Mike was my guess of being the killer last night. I guess I'm wrong." Brett openly stated his guess for the killer to Kendra & Cecilia.

The girls stayed silent.

"What about you girls?" Brett questioned.

"I think it's Jeremy," Cecilia said bluntly.

"Me too." Kendra lied. The model thought that her very own alliance member, Mary was the killer. However, Kendra didn't want to reveal the information over the fears that her alliance would ditch her for thinking one of them was the killer.

"Why would Jeremy do this? He's too famous to pull something off like this." Brett challenged Cecilia and Kendra's theory.

Cecilia shrugged "He's the most threatening man here, there's just something about him which seems disturbed."

As much as Brett didn't want to admit it, he knew Cecilia had a point. There was something about Jeremy which seemed dark. It was slowly dawning on Brett that himself and Chantal might be working side by side alongside the killer.

"Whoever it is, I think it's one of the guys. I can only see a man pulling off all these murders." Kendra once again lied through her teeth just as the resort bell rang.

Time was up for the three guests who were investigating the morgue.
