***years ago***
"So are we just going to pretend you didn't tell me that my aunt just died?" Remy put his homework down. "Don't we have to take in Virgil now?"
"You, are going nowhere near Virgil Remy. Your aunt has made it very clear that you are a bad influence on him." Remy stared at his mother.
"Are you insane?!" He cried out. His mother straightened her dress and turned to face him angrily.
"No going with us to the funeral." She said. Remy started crying.
"You can't keep me from saying goodbye to my aunt." She glared at him.
"I can." She folded her arms across his chest. "Now leave it."
"Remy can come honey, he just can't go near Virgil." His father stated.
"He's grieving and you won't let me help him through this?" Remy backed away shaking his head. "What the fuck..."
"You are a bad influence on him."
"He just lost his fucking family!! Who the hell is going to take care of him from now on?! Kids only eleven!" His mother glared at him.
"Nobody, he'll just go to the system."
"Oh fuck you! He's your sisters child! You have to take care of him!" Remy cried.
"No, we dont. He's the reason they both died anyways. He survived the crash they didn't. He should be the one who's dead."
"Blaming him won't solve anything!" Remy cried. He stormed up to his room and threw clothes and stuff into a bag, grabbing the jar and boxes full of change he kept under his bed and throwing those in as well. "Fuck you both, I'll take care of him."
"And yourself? As if you can even manage to do that." Remy glared at her. "You are sixteen they'll just call you a runaway."
"Fine then, guess I'm a runaway then." He stormed out of the house.
***hours later***
He walked over to the bank and smiled at the lady.
"Hi, my cousins house is going to be put on the market and he won't have anywhere else to go so...I want to buy it." The lady smiled sweetly.
"I can't sell to a minor are you crazy?" Someone walked over and smiled placing a hand on his shoulder.
"I'm his father, sorry he was just so eager to give you the money the house has been in this family for awhile...his poor little cousin just lost everything and I'm taking him and his cousin in myself." He smiled at the lady. "Here's my card."after they processed the information the man grabbed Remys hand and dragged him from the bank and into a car. Remy panicked. "You'll pay me back one day." He smiled at Remy. "For now, you'll live off the streets in this nice place doing some things for me every now and then okay kid?"

"No! Okay hell no! I'm sixteen you can't just tell me what to do!" He shoved Remy against the car door by his throat and Remy tried to grab his arm to shove him away.
"You will do as I so please or I will go back in there and sell that god damn house you so badly want to keep." Remy thought of Virgil and tears filled his eyes as he nodded. The man released him and Remy glared at him.
"Why'd you follow me anyways?" Remy asked. "How long have you even been following me?"
"A sixteen year old boy alone walking into the bank? Come on now I assumed you were alone and I was correct. Lucky I saved your ass." He smirked and ran a hand down Remys face. "A Precious thing like you will definitely be worth keeping safe." Remy grabbed his hand.
"Touch me again I will break your hand." The man just laughed.
"Feisty, you'll fit in just well." He started the car and they drove to a warehouse. He parked in the garage and got out. "Welcome to your new home kid, now let's change your name shall we?"
****a few years later (When Remus kidnapped Virgil and Janus the first time)****(virgil is 16 Remy is 21)
Remy put his fork down and stared at his phone in silence. His eyes widened and he placed the phone down. He went to run but he was grabbed by the arm.
"You didn't finish eating, what's got you in such a hurry?" Remy immediately locked his phone and looked at his 'guardian'.
"Nothing, I just.... I have to pee..." he was hit hard with a cane and Remy crashed into the coffee table breaking it.
"Come on Remy you've been under my care for how long and you decided to lie to me just now? You should know better." He lifted Remys chin with the cane so he was looking up at him. "You are twenty one now kiddo, but that doesn't mean you have free will."
"Fine! Jesus Christ." Remy smacked the cane away and stood up. "My cousin was fucking kidnapped."
"The kid you so badly want to protect?" He laughed. "Oh that's so unfortunate." Remy rolled his eyes.
"I'm going out." He went to walk away but was pulled back.
"I didn't say you could." Remy looked down at the ground.
"I have an interview for an actual job, one that doesn't involve doing things for you..." Remy shivered as he was pulled to the mans chest.

"Have fun at the interview kiddo." He kissed Remys cheek. "And this for good luck." He turned Remy around and kissed his lips. Remy almost gagged as he pulled away.
"You still smell like ass." He rolled his eyes as he walked away grabbing his bag. "Maybe drink less, and actually brush your teeth old man." He walked out the door and immediately started running. He was going to finally escape. He pulled out his phone and looked up his parents address. He paused for a second. Would they even want to see him again after all this time? He sighed and continued walking anyways.
***a few hours later***
Remy knocked on the door. He bit his lip as he saw a light go on and the door opened.
"Who is it?" A man asked. Remy laughed.
"Wow you haven't changed, hi old man." Remy smiled at him.
"Oh my...I...oh my god." The man immediately pulled Remy into a tight hug. "Where the hell have you been oh my god!" He pulled away and saw his dad was crying.
"Well...that's a long story. Where's mom?" He asked. His father looked down.
"She passed away a few years after you left..." Remy bit his lip.
"Sorry I didn't know."
"Come on, where the hell have you been?" His father let him in and Remy sat down in the living room.
"Well after I ran away, I went to the bank with all the money I had hoping to save virgils house for him." Remy started to shake. "Then this man, this god awful monster, he payed for it..." his father covered his mouth in horror.
"Remy oh my god..."
"He told me he'd keep the house for Virgil, as long as I didn't fight against him. He took me away...." Remy started crying heavily. "he had me go out on drug trades with him and used me a god damn pawn, he fucking raped me! He wouldn't let me leave-."
"Remy, calm down it's okay." His father walked over and hugged him tightly. "I'm so sorry I didn't go looking for you, I'm so so sorry we didn't stop you from running away."
"It wasn't your fault I ran away."
"It was my fault we didn't go after you, we should have told the police you ran away...."
"I almost got away a few times, but I......he didn't exactly take kindly to that." They held eachother and Remy started crying heavily again.
"I dont...god you grew up." His father laughed bitterly. "How did you get away this time?"
"I told him I had a job interview." Remy bit his lip. "I ran, I got away."
"Remy he's kept you alive for five years, he's kept you by his side you know where he is...we need to get him arrested."
"I don't..." Remy pulled up the article. "Have you seen this?" His father looked at the article then nodded.
"Yes, I don't know who took him either." Remy frowned.
"We can save him right?" Remy asked. "I saw all the police stuff dad, you became one after she died didn't you?" He nodded.
"I retired long ago kid." Remy sighed.
"Okay..."
"You need a place to stay Remy? I know you just got away you should stay low for awhile so he doesn't kill you.."
"I'll be fine, thanks for the concern dad." Remy hugged his father one last time then stood up. "I'm gonna go visit mom." He smiled back at his dad. "I'm sorry, for running away all those years ago. I should have listened to you and mom and just stayed away from Virgil...."
"Will you be okay?" He asked. Remy shrugged.
"Probably." His father laughed.
"You idiot."
"You love me." Remy left the house and walked to the cemetery.
***a half hour later***
Remy stared at his phone as it rang and rang. He bit his lip. He shouldn't answer knowing damn well he'd be taken back to that house and not be able to leave it. He wasn't going to be trusted out anymore. Remy threw his phone and immediately ran. He wasn't sure where, but he definitely wasn't going to stay where they could easily find him. He found his old friends place and knocked.
"Remy?"
"Hey Remus, been awhile."

Dream of the Abyss
Elisa Mary Grant died in a hospital bed after being stuck in it for six months, and like any other, her soul drifted away from her husk when she passed. For her, death was a release. It merely meant that she no longer have to wake up in pain, breathing through tubes and have doctors flood her veins with dubious chemicals for “experimental treatment”. Free from her mortal constraints and useless body, she felt… at peace, serene, even. Death is bliss, after all, when objectively living sucked to the point of extreme. Therefore, there was no reason to mourn at all and she knew she definitely didn't. ... That was until, on her way for a proper reincarnation, she found herself rudely interrupted and left stranded in the great NoWhere. “Wonderful,” she remarked as she floated in the [Beyond], “Just when I thought that suicide is the answer.” Author's note: Updates every Tuesday-Wednesday, probably some time in between. ... P.S Notes: Contains existential questions and nihilistic themes, rather philosophical. Will be rather sluggish until the MC gets her shit together. P.SS Notes: Story takes time to develop. And maybe uncomfortable. It's not gonna be action-packed or filled with battles, I think. Anyway, it is kinda unusual. P. SSS Notes: It is not LitRpg. Don't be fooled.

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
