《Pied Piper | {K.NJ}》Chapter 2

You didn't get to sleep a wink. It was useless. You couldn't block the sound of the flute completely and your heart kept racing faster.
It only stopped when the sun rose. You wanted to just roll in your bed and go to sleep but school was waiting for you. You had no choice but to get up with a loud groan.

"Are you okay, dear? You look like very exhausted," Seokjin said as he set the table for breakfast. (Y/N) was already seated, ready to consume everything in your sight.
"Nothing. Just couldn't sleep."
"Couldn't sleep? Is something bothering you?"
You shook your head and then looked at your Brother. He seemed to be looking fine and would have a pleasant sleep as well.
"Did you hear someone playing the flute last night?"
"Flute?"
You realised that your Brother must not have heard it since he looked rather confused by her question. You shook her your and told him it was nothing.
You thought maybe your Brother fell asleep once he went upstairs so he must have missed it. Putting that aside, you ate your breakfast and headed off to school.
••••••••••••••••••<>••••••••••••••••••
"(Y/N)... are you okay?"
The first person you were greeted at school was your Boyfriend. Jimin was the school president so he had to reach school early and help out with everything that is necessary. He had to set an example to everyone. A model student would be perfect to describe him.
"I'm fine. Just couldn't sleep last night."
He made an 'o' with his lips. The two of you walked to your class. Jimin's class was on the opposite direction but he would always accompany you. Simply because he wanted to spend every single moment with you.
You were walking side to side and he was not saying anything so you glanced at him. He had a concerned look on his face. Probably after hearing that you wouldn't sleep last night.
You tapped on his shoulder and poked his cheek with your forefinger when he turned to you. You grinned at him as he looked at you puzzled.
"Don't worry, Jimin. I can just sleep in class. I will fill up my energy during lessons."
His lips curved up and ran his hand through your hair.
"Don't get caught though. I don't want to be the one marking you to attend detention class."
"Looking down on my skills?"
The two of you bursted out laughing.
By the time you reached the room, the bell rang. He reached out to hold your hand and sandwiched it between his two hands.
"See you during break."

You managed to sleep through all the classes until break time. The only time you decided to wake up because you had been looking forward to eat the food that Seokjin had prepared for you.
As usual, you were sitting with your friends in class and Jimin had decided to join as well. Jimin didn't bring his lunchbox so you shared yours. You don't share your food with anyone, except him. Jimin often spends his lunch with his friends at the canteen but for today, he wanted to ditch his friends and stay with you.
You focused on eating your meal and Jimin held your other free hand and played with your fingers while listening to the girls' conversation.
"There's another girl who met the Pied Piper last night," Jiyeon said as she glanced up from her phone.
"Really? Who is it?" Minji asked.
"I can't believe it. It's someone from this neighbourhood," she answered, feeling thrilled.
You flinched slightly and Jimin looked at you. You smiled and told him it's nothing. All of a sudden, you were interested in their conversation.
"Did she managed to get a photo?" Eunha asked curiously.
Jiyeon shook her head sadly. She then found something that caught her attention on her phone screen. She zoomed it and held it up so that all of you can see it.
"She said that she heard someone playing the flute. It was sweet and loving to hear. Soon, her heart started racing faster and she became tempted to follow the sound. Eventually that's she did without her knowing and she saw him playing the flute. She was about to go to him but got distracted by a cat running past her. When she turned back, he was gone."
You bit your lips slightly. It was exactly how you felt last night. The sound of the flute. It's scary how you could strangely relate to this way too much.
"That's such a waste!" Minji groaned while throwing her arms and legs out in the air.
"It was dark so she couldn't see him clearly."
Jiyeon pulled her phone back and ran her thumb on the screen, trying to check if there would be any other update on the Pied Piper.
Sadly, there was none and she had to give up as the bell rang.
The class went on again but you didn't sleep like you planned to. Your mind was occupied by the conversation during the lunch break.
You flipped your notebook and turned it to a clean page. You wrote down Pied Piper in the middle and circled it. You branched out from it and scribbled 'flute'.

Underneath your book was your phone. Sneakily, you turned on your data and searched for the Pied Piper. There were tons of news about it and they were mostly updated by girls.
You checked them out and most of them just talked about how they got their hearts broken by him. Another clue about him. You branched out another stem and wrote 'broken hearts'.
Since they were mostly girls, you knew his target was girls so you added 'girls' as well. About the age range, you weren't sure. There hadn't been any around her age. That's for sure. It seemed like he didn't target any teenage girls as of yet but that couldn't be confirmed.
You scrolled through your phone and saw some blurry images, definitely of Pied Piper. It was of low quality and his face was covered by either a cap or things like trees and banners. However, you could clearly tell that he was a 10 just from his side profile. Height is of a model and that dimple when he smiles is a major plus to his charm.
'No wonder girls fall for him' you thought to yourself. But then you wondered why he broke their hearts. There must be a reason behind that beautiful music he played.
You closed your eyes and breathed in deeply, trying to recall the sound of the flute you heard. Instead of wracking your brain, you felt your heart beating faster. And you could hear it in your ear. It was as if that person was playing it at the very moment.
The beautiful melody that was produced by the flute.
••••••••••••••••••<>••••••••••••••••••
You reached home earlier than usual. The last class got cancelled because the teacher was absent. Instead of self-study lesson, the students were dismissed.
Seokjin hadn't arrive back from work yet so you decided to cook dinner. You are not as good as your Brother but the skill is definitely evident.
By the time you finished cooking, Seokjin was back. He sniffed in a huge amount of air and licked his lips.
"I smell something so delicious!"
You chuckled as you set the table.
"Not as good as you though."
He took a seat and took a bite.
"What?! This is the best food I've ever eaten in my life!"
You laughed even louder and sat down in front of him. You also began to dig in and you could tell that your skills were improving.
••••••••••••••••••<>••••••••••••••••••
Seokjin washed the dishes this time while you sat in the living room with the television on. You were doing your homework but your Favourite drama was on and couldn't afford to miss it. So you ended up multitasking.
Soon, Seokjin also plopped by beside you and took out his laptop. The two of you were concentrating on your own work. It was a mutual understanding that the quietness was appreciated, except for the sound that was coming from the TV.
You were having trouble with one of the Maths problem. You have learnt it before but you had totally forgotten how to solve it. You squeezed your eyes to get your brain to work to it's fullest but it was definitely not working.
You sighed and threw the book on the table. Seokjin giggled at your action and he picked it up. He read the problem and glanced at you who was sulking beside him.
"You did this before with me."
"I just couldn't remember."
He raised one of his eyebrow and explained it to you again. It would be the third time he had explained this problem but you still got it wrong each time. It's as if that problem had something against you.
You got it immediately after he explained it and so you wrote it down. Since you were done with your assignment, you kept your books at the corner and stretched your arms out before relaxing and watched the drama.
Something suddenly entered your ear and you jolted up. Seokjin turned to you shocked.
"What's wrong?"
"Didn't you hear it?"
He shook his head and you grabbed the remote to lower the volume down. It was clear in your ears. The sound of the flute.
But only you heard it. You could tell it from how your Brother was staring at you weirdly.
You gasped a bit when you felt something like an electric shock ran through your body. You hugged yourself, trying to calm yourself down but your heart was squeezing by itself.
"(Y/N)! What's wrong?! Tell me."
By now, Seokjin was fully alert that there was something going on. He grabbed your wrist and checked you from head to toe. He didn't know what to do since he had no idea what was happening.
It felt painful and tempting. Tempting to go outside and follow the sound. You bit your lips and covered your ears. You wanted to block it away but it was not working. You knew it because you were not hearing the sound with your ear but your heart.
"(Y/N)! Breathe."
You closed your eyes shut and breathed in and out. You finally relaxed and you could feel your heart had calmed down. The rate had slowed down. It was still going fast but manageable. The sound of the flute was still clearly heard in your ears and the temptation was still there.
You wondered what was going on.

Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
