《Write Better: Tips and tricks》Genre vs Category

Before we get into the meaty part, I wanted to take a chapter to discuss the difference between genre and category. Many people fully don't understand the difference as it is known in the publishing industry (Wattpad can be misleading because it tells you to choose a category and then lists a majority of genres).
Day to day, you can survive switching them around since they're essentially synonyms, but if you want to spare yourself correction from picky people (or you want to understand why an agent doesn't just want to see "young adult" in the spot for genre), here's a quick reference.
A is a category of literary composition. They tend to be broad in nature and can be distinguished from one another through examination of content, tone, technique, and occasionally length. They group books with these similar elements and often have subgenres (Romance —> historical, contemporary).
format (graphic novel)
age (young adult, new adult)
*usually* length (short story)
A doesn't tell you much about what a book is about, but more that it contains one element or structure (such as graphics, teenagers, or a small number of words).
Here's an more visual example if you're still confused or want a way to explain this to someone who doesn't necessarily care about it as much as you.
A literary genre is Dalmatian. A literary category is Dog.
Let's try again: A literary category is Dog. A literary genre is Poodle. A subgenre is Toy Poodle (still a poodle, but it's a Toy type, vs a Miniature, Standard, or Tea Cup).
Like I said before, they're kinda the same thing: barking, pooping, hungry, lovable tubes with legs. In most circles you can use them interchangeably. The difference is that a dog helps to tell you that the animal is not a fish or a cat, and Dalmatian tells you more what the dog is about (spotted, this tall, weighs this, tends to look really good next to fire engines).

Frameshift
Magic. Math. Not a whole lot of context. Two months ago, I was a wormhole navigator, ripping open a hole in the universe to save a ship of people who only vaguely tolerated me. Two weeks ago, long story short, I threaded an impossible path through the void between dimensions to crash-land into a dungeon. You know the kind: monsters to defeat, corridors full of traps to avoid, and magical powers to earn. I'm not ashamed to admit that it's been two weeks of loneliness, fear, adrenaline, and constant injury. But I'll make it out of here by myself if I have to, or my name isn't Adam Leviathan James. ... too bad the Levi doesn't stand for Leviathan, huh. AN: Expectations should include in medias res, violence, smut, friendship, and powers/progression systems with absolutely an insufficiency of context and (at least at first) no definitions or explanations, and magic-as-programming/engineering (with something of an emphasis on "what if magical runework were an analogue to circuit diagrams"). This story used to be called "Yet Another Godsforsaken Isekai". Discord server: https://discord.gg/dHh3XMMB4T Cover by the amazing Daedalus of The Way Ahead.

The Iron Forge
Jeremy and Drovic walked two different paths in life until the fates decided that their courses should meet on the way to the Iron Forge. An ancient power used by the gods to forge the world and all its creations. Few rare people know of its power, and fewer are willing to sacrifice to gain it, while others want to survive another day. Watch as these two unlikely heroes are forced together to save not just themselves but the fate of all reality. I'm only a hobbyist writer. There may be the occasional error, and pacing may be poorly-handled; let me know, and I will make corrections. I am always open to constructive criticism and will do my best to respond to any questions/comments. I'm here to write stuff that makes my brain happy and follow my dream. Thank you for reading this far comments are always welcomed, and I hope you enjoy the book. A special thank you to HWPerfidy for creating the cover art for my book.

Many centuries ago in a world of Magic, there existed a group of figures known as the 9 Dragons, who led a large cult called the Dragon-Tails, whose only purpose was to cause chaos all throughout the land, stopping at nothing just to have their own way. But, there rose up a large resistance force led by Two Warriors, and with their might, they subdued the Dragons, and brought about an era of peace once more. Years later however, the Dragons had slowly risen up once again with their devious schemes, and standing against them were the descendants of the Warriors, known as Hunters. Tune in as the Hunters pour out every ounce of their power to suppress the Dragons before they can achieve their ultimate goal: to revive the 9 Elders.
