"Oh, hello Adalet, I'm so sorry I'm late! My brother needed me to run some errands for him, and I may have gotten lost . . ." Amy admitted with a light blush, "guess he wasn't joking when he offered to get me a GPS! I hope I didn't miss anything!"
"Next time you arrive late, Amy, just remember that my office gives directly into the entrance," Andrea advised, "and that crawling under desks gets you noticed."
"I'm so sorry, Chief! It won't happen again!" she promised.
"Calm down, Officer Young, you're going to need your energy. Capt. Adalet, I've got a murder investigation for you!" she reported, "an ex-convict has been murdered in the Jewish Deli down Parks Avenue. A gruesome affair and I need my best Captain on the scene."
"We'll do our best, Chief! Capt. Adalet will crack the case in no time!" she assured, "ready when you are, Adalet!"
Adalet slung her case across her shoulders, "let's go!"
At the delicatessen . . .
"There's so much blood!" Amy shivered, "and that open wound, brrr! Sorry, Adalet, I just need a second to focus . . ."
"His face seems unnaturally red," Adalet remarks as Roxie placed the body in a bag.
"You're right Adalet, his face seems bright red! As if he got burned or something . . ." Roxie mused, "I'll take him back to the morgue to find out why."
"Thanks, Roxie," she says as the body was taking out of the delicatessen.
"Oh," Amy checked her buzzing phone, "Hannah just sent us the victim's details! His name is David Breitman, he was recently released from prison after serving a 25-year sentence!"
Adalet walked behind the counter, "the register is on the floor, and it looks like there's something in the drawer, it must have fallen during the struggle."
"Should we have a closer look at it?" Amy asks.
"Already working on it!" she replied, "we'll also have to speak with Myriam about the fight."
She frowned as it took a moment to realize who she was referring to, "oh, you're right, of course, we'll also need to talk to the owner of the Deli! She was in the shop when it happened, the poor woman must still be in shock . . ."
She pried out the last of the pinkish fibres, "I think most would be, but at least we have something to send to Yann now!"
"I'll get those pink threads you collected from the cash register to the lab for you, Adalet," she says taking the bag, "you don't have to worry about a thing!"
Amy left the shop to catch up with Roxie before the coroner could drive off. As she was gone, Adalet headed to the back of the shop where the owner's small office was located.
"Ms. Miller," Adalet greeted the woman, "did you see David Breitman's murderer? After all, he was killed in your shop while you were in it!"
"I didn't see anything! He came by to buy some food, I went in the back to get everything, and when I came back he was . . . He was dead!" Myriam explains clearly.
"And you didn't hear anything?" she asked.
"No. I'm telling you, I don't know what happened!" she denied.
"Alright . . . Then maybe the victim mentioned something suspicious before he was killed?" she prompted.
"He's just some old guy . . ." she shrugged but did think about her next answer, "but he was rambling about a meeting he had at the train station, it seemed to be really important for him."

"A meeting?" she hummed, "it's a new lead for our investigation! Thank you, Myriam!"
Adalet left the delicatessen and went outside to find Amy. the rookie was waiting for her by the hummer and the captain quickly brought her up to speed about the new lead. They drove out of the train station and entered the main platform to search for clues.
Adalet picked up an orange prescription bottle with their victim's name printed on the label. But there was noting that said what had been in the pill bottle and the barcode numbers hand faded slightly. As she was walking back to join Amy at the side, she spotted a torn card on the ground. She picked up the pieces and continued to the platform.
"I like train stations in the middle of the afternoon, there's so few people, you forget you're in a big city for a bit!" Amy muses as Adalet joined her, "oh, but what did you find, Adalet?"
"A torn card and a pill bottle," Adalet replied.
"A torn card? Oh, what a sad sight . . . I hope we can put it back together!" she said as she saw the colourful paper, "look, there's a name on that prescription bottle you found! "David Breitman" . . . It's the victim's name!"
She nods, "therefore we have to decipher that number to know what it was and who prescribed it!"
Since the label had been rubbed off too much to recover with carbon powder, Adalet would just have to repair it with logic and reasoning. She gout of a block of sticky notes and a pencil as she took a look at the barcode. Some of the numbers were in better condition than others, but she still managed to repair the code in no time at all.
"Great job decoding the serial number on our victim's prescription bottle, Adalet! Let's send it to Hannah, she'll find out what was prescribed and by whom!" Amy grinned taking the bottle to attach the sticky note.
Adalet then began to work on the torn card they had found. She taped up the torn pieces back together and saw that it was a birthday card, sent from the Pacific Bay prison.
"The card you just restored is a birthday card, Adalet! But what is that weird stamp on it . . ." Amy wondered.
"It's from the Pacific Bay Prison!" Adalet responds, "it means this card was sent from there, and since we know our victim has just been released . . . The two might be linked!"
"Oh no," she cried as her partner flipped the card over, "the message on the back of the card is unreadable! Do you think you can find out what it says, Adalet?"
"Let's see . . ."
This time some carbon powder would help recover the missing words. Adalet dusted the faded message of the postcard and recovered the words written on it.
"Perfect, Adalet!" Amy praised, "thanks to you, we can read what was written on that birthday card! "Dear daughter, meet me at the train station at 5 PM. I won't let you down" . . . It was sent to a certain Eva Breitman . . . Breitman, the name sounds familiar . . ."
Adalet chuckled lightly, "Amy . . . who's murder are we investigation?"
"Oh duh," she slapped her forehead, "sorry Adalet, of course, it's our victim's name! Which means our victim was going to meet his daughter Eva here, and it's almost 5 PM!"
"Excuse me, officers, do you have the time?" a woman in a pink dress inquires, "I'm supposed to meet someone here at 5 PM, but I was in a hurry and forgot my watch . . ."

"Huh . . . Would you happen to be Eva Breitman?" Amy asks, Eva nodded, "Capt. Adalet would like to ask you a few questions . . ."
"What do you want, Capt. Adalet?" Eva asked sharply but quickly composed herself, "sorry, it's just, I'm waiting for someone. I'm kind of anxious right now."
"We know you're waiting for your father, Ms. Breitman," Adalet replied, "and . . . We have very bad news. I'm afraid he was murdered this morning."
"He . . . What? Oh my . . . Oh my . . ." tears were starting to build up in her eyes, "Daddy . . . What happened? He was just a harmless old man . . . I waited so long to see him again, and now . . ."
"Why were you waiting for your father, Eva?" she asks gently.
"He was supposed to come and live with me, we were going to be a family again after all these years . . ." she sniffled, "I'm sorry, Officers, I . . . I need to go home. I just . . . need to rest . . ."
To the morgue!
"That was one neat murder, Adalet! Your victim died from blood loss, all nice and easy! Well, for me, not for him," Roxie corrected.
"Roxie!" Amy gasped, "have a little respect for that poor old man! Would you like someone talking like that over your grave?"
"I hope my grave becomes the hottest party spot in town! I'd rather have people drinking than crying. But speaking of drinking . . ." she says, "you noticed that the victim's face was bright red, Adalet, and I can tell you why! This man was burned before getting gutted!"
"It was? With what?" Adalet inquired.
Roxie nodded, "I analyzed his skin cells, and I found traces of tea! Green tea to be exact. My theory is that your killer blinded the victim by throwing hot tea at their face before killing them! Which means your killer drinks tea!"
"A tea-drinking killer,"' she said, "they should have drunk Chamomile, it might have helped calm them down!"
"Yeah," she chuckled, "and Adalet? I'm sorry about your husband, I wish I could have met him."
She smiled sadly, "I'm sure you two would have hit it off, especially if you showed Fili the best bars in town!"
Roxie laughed, "yeah! We would have given Frank a run for his money!"
After having another found of laughter, Adalet and Amy left Roxie's morgue. They walked down the hallway side by side until they reached Yann's lab and entered to see what he had for them.
"Well, that was a tricky one for sure . . . These pink threads you collected from the cash register have actually been stained with blood! Quite tough to notice with these colours, except for you, Adalet!" Yann added.
"Thanks, Yann!" Adalet beamed back.
"I analyzed the blood, and it comes from your victim! He must have wrestled with the killer," he theorizes, "and one of them got their clothes stuck in the cash register. Since your victim wasn't wearing anything pink . . ."
"It means the killer is the one wearing pink clothing! Great job, Yann!" Amy celebrated.
"And, Adalet," Yann spoke before the cops could leave, "I heard about your husband, if you need anything, my door's always open."
Adalet smiled, "thanks, Yann, again."
Adalet and Amy left the forensics lab and turned down the hall to the tech lab.
"So, I took a look at that serial number of yours, and it allowed me to find out that your victim was prescribed common painkillers by an unlikely source!" Hannah informed them.
"How so?" Adalet inquired.
"The doctor who prescribed this to your victim is Mark McKenzie, a famous surgeon whose rates are well above anything an ex-convict could afford!" she explained, "he's a hotshot in the medical world, Ivywood stars' go-to doctor! But apparently, he recently moved back to Inner City! There's no way people here can afford him . . ."
"Which means something doesn't fit," she frowned.
"You're right, Adalet," Amy agrees, "we have to know how the victim could afford someone like Mark McKenzie. Let's talk to him!"
"Oh, and Russell wanted me to tell you, Adalet," Hannah says, "if you need to talk, he's always in his office ready to listen. And while I'm not so good with this sort of thing, so is mine."
"Thank you, Hannah," Adalet smiled, "and if you see Russell before I do, tell him thank you as well."
"I will!" she promised.
They called up Dr. McKenzie's new office building on the drive over to it and requested to speak with the doctor. The secretary promised that he would be available for a little while to speak with them when they arrived. As they entered the building they were immediately shown to Marck's private office.
"Dr. McKenzie, you prescribed medication to Mr. Breitman, did you not?" Adalet asked, "can you tell us how a poor ex-con like him could afford a famous doctor like you?"
"I see my reputation precedes me! But it's all in the past now, I came back to Inner City to rediscover my roots, and to help the less fortunate," Mark explained to them, "Mr. Breitman, being just out of prison, needed a new doctor, and I was more than happy to help him. He doesn't need heavy medical assistance if that's why you're here."
"You couldn't be more right," Amy responds, "David Breitman was murdered this morning. We're looking into every possibility, we're investigating anyone who could have seen him recently."
"Dead? Damn, I didn't expect that . . ." he muttered under his breath, "he was a nice old man, I don't know exactly what he was arrested for, but he didn't seem dangerous. He only came to my office twice for some painkillers. Nothing that could help your investigation I'm afraid."
Back at the Police Station . . .
"Well, that's one tricky investigation we've gotten ourselves into, Adalet! Let me remember all we have found," Amy says pulling out her notepad, "David Breitman's throat was cut in the Jewish Delicatessen, and the owner, Myriam Miller didn't see or hear anything even though she was inside! How weird . . ."
"We met his daughter, Eva Breitman, to whom he was trying to get closer, and also his doctor, Mark McKenzie, who recently came back to Inner City," Adalet took over.
"But who could have wanted to kill that man? Was it an old beef from 25 years ago? Was it a new enemy he just made?" she questioned, "what a mystery, Adalet!"
"Adalet! I got some news for you! I hacked into the Pacific Bay Prison servers . . ." Hannah said.
"Oh, no, not again Hannah! Andrea asked you to stop hacking government servers!" Amy reminded not impressed one bit.
"And I did well not to listen! Adalet, you'll never believe where David Breitman was living!" she paused for a dramatic effect, "he had been living at the synagogue!"
"At the synagogue?" Adalet frowned picturing the Jewish place of worship.
"But . . . How can he have lived there," Amy wondered obviously confused, "it's a place of worship, not an inn . . ."
"The best way to know what he was doing there is to go take a look!" she replied, "let's go to the synagogue!"
At Synagogue Interior . . .
"What a beautiful place, Adalet," Amy commented "I never had a chance to enter a synagogue before!"
"They truly are an amazing sight," Adalet agrees, "but we still have an investigation to work on!"
"Hm, you're right, back to work. You think there's something relevant in that box of clothes donation?" she asks seeing the box at her feet, "I hope you'll find it! And you found a business card for Yuan's Garden! Isn't Yuan Wong that old herbalist we met in our previous investigation?"
"Yup!"
"I knew the name rang a bell!"
"And there was something written on the card," Adalet says pointing to the faded pencil markings, "we better try and recover whatever it was, then we can talk to the Rabbi"
"Oh, you're right, there's also the Rabbi, he's been waiting to talk to you," Amy replies nodding in the direction of the entrance, "his name is Jacob Fishman. Since the victim slept here, he might have valuable information!"
Amy said she would begin looking through the clothing donation while Adalet worked on the card. The captain dusted the missing message on the card and managed to recover what had been written on it. Unfortunately, it wasn't written in English. She walked over to help Amy and to show her the card.
"Perfect as always, Adalet! You've uncovered what used to be written on that business card! Let's see what it says . . ." Amy took the card but gulped at seeing what was written, "oh dear, it's Chinese symbols! But I don't know what they mean, Adalet, I took Spanish as a second language in school!"
"Chinese was never one of my strongest languages," Adalet admitted, "at least when it comes to reading it, but Hannah might be able to translate this!"
"You're right, we should send that note to Hannah, she'll know how to translate those characters!" she agreed.
"So could you find anything in the clothes?"
"Whoa, people are really generous! Someone donated a phone to the synagogue!" Amy exclaims having just pulled out a cellphone.
"Actually, I think our victim might have just accidentally dropped it in her," Adalet says showing her the name on the phone.
She flushed, ". . . Haha, I hadn't seen that the victim's name was written on the phone. Of course, that's why you picked it up! The phone is locked though . . . Do you think you can find the right code, Adalet?"
"When have I not?"
Adalet made short work of the locked phone and had gained access to it easily. The first thing to pop up on the screen was that the victim had one new message. Adalet opened it and saw that it was from Eva, his daughter.
"That's weird, there's only one message on the victim's phone," Adalet frowned as she skimmed the text message, "I'll only help you out of pity, you ruined my life! I'll never forgive you!" And it was sent by Eva!"
"It doesn't fit with what she told us," Amy mused, "she seemed eager to live with her dad again . . . We have to talk to her!"
Before leaving the synagogue Adalet and Amy went to the entrance to talk to the Rabbi. The old man was waiting for them on the other side of the door and once introductions were out of the way, they got down to business.
"Hello, Capt. Adalet! To what do I owe the pleasure? Here, let me make you some tea," Rabbi Jacob offered.
"Rabbi Jacob," Adalet responded, "I'm afraid that David Breitman has been murdered this morning. We learned that he'd been sleeping here since his release from prison."
"Murdered? It's horrible, why would anyone do that? David was an ex-con, it's true, but he was trying to turn his life around!" he told them sincerely, "he had nowhere to go after his release from prison, so I offered to let him stay here until he could find proper accommodations."
"How long had you known David for?" she asks.
"I knew him before he was incarcerated. I saw him for Sabbath, he was a nice man, if you forgave his illegal activities of course," he answered, "I have to admit David seemed to have a lot on his mind lately, though. He spent a lot of time at the train station, just sitting and thinking . . ."
They thanked Rabbi Jacob and left the synagogue to bring their clues to the lab then to find Eva.
"Poor Mr. Breitman tried really hard to turn his life around . . ." Amy sighed looking out the car window, "we've got to find his killer as soon as possible!"
"Did you hear when Rabbi Jacob said David was spending a lot of time at the train station?" Adalet asked turning into the station's parking lot.
She nodded, "it's true, Mr. Fishman mentioned that David spent a lot of time at the train station . . . It might be a good idea to go back there, what do you think Adalet?"
"You read my mind."
After they had dropped off the business card with Hannah to translate, Adalet and Amy drove out to Eva's apartment. They walked up the stairs to the woman's door and knocked on it and waited for her to answer. Once the door was opened, they started the interview.
"Eva, we know you weren't as happy about your father's return as you pretended. Capt. Adalet found the message you sent him!" Amy informed her showing Eva her father's phone.
"Of course I was angry! He destroyed my life! He abandoned me, he got himself caught, and I had to grow up without my father!" Eva spat like venom in her mouth, "and he comes back 25 years later, and he thinks he can just waltz back into my life?! That he can just make it up to me?"

Dominion Expansion (a 4X LitRPG)
Clay is one of the world's top players of 4X games, a genre where the goal is to eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate. He's also one of the only players in the world to so stubbornly stick to the one city strategy, a favorite tactic of his that involves only ever using a single city or planet depending on the game's setting. All that matters to him is winning with his favorite strategy, but earning the respect of his fellow players for taking a sub-optimal strategy to its highest level has always been a nice bonus. And now it is because of his skill and entertaining determination that he has been chosen to represent a higher realm in a strategy game where the fate of Earth and dozens of other worlds are at stake. To the victor goes the spoils, and the spoils include entire worlds and billions of lives. That's how he ends up representing the ascended realm of Hell in a grand "game" between an entire pantheon of godly beings and other higher powers. But while it may just be a game to those overseeing it, it is a genuine war for survival to those participating in it where billions of real lives will go to the victor of whoever wins, and many will die before the game is over. Quick Author's Notes: System inspired by Civilization, Endless Legend, Stellaris, and Crusader Kings 2. Combat mechanics inspired by the Total War series. Slow-paced with many long-term plans. Protagonist has a personality heavily inspired by Ron Swanson. Know who that is and love him? You should like Clay. Know who Ron Swanson is and hate him? You'll probably hate Clay. Planning on writing every single day (turn). Days with important things happening will have the system/game mechanics be the priority of the chapter. Days where there isn't really anything important happening will be more slice-of-life and focused on character interactions. Designed a dice-based randomized map generator to create the world as the story goes on, so I don't even know myself exactly what's going to happen as a lot is dependent on world generation. Tech tree with hundreds of technologies already designed. There is a "harem," but it's not the main focus, the girls won't be cardboard cutouts, and I'm not going to completely forget about any previous women in the relationship whenever a new one comes along. One last thing. The "game" starts off with primitive technology level. The current plan is for the "endgame" tech level to be equivilent to WW2-era technology. After that and war just gets boring until you end up in space. Cover is temporary and made from royalty-free stock images while waiting for the real cover's commission to finish.
