《Killer Bay》What Dies Beneath

"Oh, hello Capt. Adalet, how did your previous Investigation go?" Amy asked as the older woman entered the office, "I hope Frank was nice to you, not that he is with any--"
"MOVE AWAY, CHILD!" Roxie yells plowing past the rookie officer, "Sorry Amy, but what Adalet needs is some real sensations! To enjoy the best our town has to offer. Would you like to go scuba diving, Adalet? A nice way to start the day, with the city's best tour guide by your side, me!"
"But . . . Just the two of you? Can I come too, Roxie?" she begs.
"Of course you can, Amy!" she assured patting the blonde's head, "the more the merrier, as I always say!"
"Oh, thank you! What do you think, Adalet, I never tried scuba diving before! Where should we go, is there a perfect place to dive?" she wondered.
"I just heard about a great place," Roxie answered, "a newly discovered part of the Coral Reef! It's by the marina, you're gonna love it Adalet!"
"The Coral Reef?!" Amy gasps, "I've always dreamed to see one up close! Quick, let's go Adalet, I'll see where we can rent wetsuits!"
At the marina . . .
"Those wetsuits are tight! How are you supposed to swim in this thing!" Roxie gags tugging on the collar of her suit, "yours fits perfectly, Adalet, I'm jealous!"
Adalet blushed sheepishly, "sorry, Roxie . . ."
"I'm so excited!" Amy squeals, "come on, Adalet, let's dive near the Coral Reef! And let's keep an eye for anything unusual, you never know!"
The three women jumped into the water and submersed themselves into the ocean life. They swam further down to the bottom of the ocean and looked around at the stunning coral riff surrounding them. Adalet saw another diver had gone down before them and the blonde woman wearing a green wetsuit was floating a few meters away.
Sensing something strange about the other diver, Adalet propelled herself towards the woman. Once she was close enough, she saw that the diver's oxygen tank was missing and her eyes were void of life. Adalet saw the tank had landed on a small rock cliff below the body and swam down to pick it up. Once that was in her possession, she grabbed ahold of the dead diver from behind and headed for the surface.
Amy and Roxie noticed that they were missing the third part of their party shortly thereafter. They returned to the boat and found Adalet placing the woman's body down on the deck. Amy and Roxie climbed aboard to get a better look.
"OH, GOD! Is that a dead person?!" Amy cried, "thank God you got her out of the water, Capt. Adalet!"
"Wait a minute," Roxie says, "I recognize her! Her name's Valerie Green, she's a professional diver who recently entered the party scene!"
"That would explain why she was down in the reef," Adalet mused.
"Wait, something's fishy! Her face got the blue tint typical of asphyxiation. And yet, the gauge on her oxygen tank is still on full," the coroner frowned as she saw the tank's gauge, "trust the coroner on this, this girl didn't drown by accident, it was murder! I'll get to the autopsy as soon as possible!"
"Adalet, you found Valerie's spare oxygen tank!" Amy grinned having been drawn to it by Roxie's comment, "the gauge is on full, but it's surprisingly light. We'd better send it to Hannah for analysis! Then, what's left to be done?"

"Some algae got stuck to her body," Adalet replied pointing to the pile next to Valerie's hip, "but it fell off when I got her up here."
"Alright, I'm on it!" she salutes, "let's all get to work!"
As Amy knelt to look through the algae, Roxie took her phone out to call for her van to be brought to the docks as Adalet went to the helm to steer the ship back to port. After the boat was docked in port, Adalet returned to the back deck to see what Amy had managed to find.
"Great job looking through all these algae, Amy!" Adalet praises, "what is that piece of paper you found?"
"Oh dear," Amy pales looking at the page, "the water's made most of it illegible! Do you think you'll manage to recover what it says?"
"Let me see . . ." she hummed taking the page.
Adalet laid it out on a dry part of the deck and Amy brought the captain her case. Adalet got out her powder and dusted the faded area of the page. It turned out to be a promotional flyer for a yacht party, but there was no more information about it.
"Tonight - Party on the BIG MIGHTY YACHT! Best Spot in Town!" Adalet read to her partner.
"I must say, I've never heard of it . . ." Amy admits.
"But we know someone who probably has!" she smirked turning to the docks, "ROXIE!"
"You do realize that the dead won't just wake up and tell me what happened to them, right?" Roxie joked looking over, "I know I'm a joy to talk to but leave me some time to work!"
"Adalet just needs your help for a second," Amy said holding up the flyer, "have you heard of the Big Mighty Yacht, by any chance?"
"Of course I have," she laughs, "it's the yacht that holds parties near the Coral Reef! I'm dying to know who owns it so they can invite me on board!"
"So this yacht might have been around when our victim was killed!" she reasoned.
Adalet nods in agreement, "we have to search the yacht right away!"
Once Roxie had left with the body and victim's oxygen tank, Adalet and Amy left the docks. Adalet drove the hummer to the other end of the docks where the bigger boats were anchored and they looked for the party yacht. It wasn't hard to find the messy boat and as Amy climbed on board, Adalet paused to remove the identification plate.
"Wow, this boat is just a mess!" Amy remarked looking around the deck, "I hope the identification plate you found will tell us who it belongs to, but you'll have to decipher it first!"
Adalet removed the last screw holding it in place, "can no one keep their things in shape?"
"And there's this torn photograph," she continues looking at the torn film, "it needs to be restored before we can find out what's on it! Just tell me if I can help, Capt. Adalet!"
Adalet took the identification plate with her onto the boat and got out her notepad and pencil. She placed a page over a few numbers and rubbed the page with her pencil. She got impressions of each of the numbers and taped them up in a line.
"That's the last number!" Adalet said taping on the string of pages to the plate.
"Good job deciphering the number on the yacht's identification plate, Adalet! Time to send it to Hannah for analysis!" Amy says.

Amy took the place of her partner and Adalet grabbed the torn photo. She used her tape to repair the photo and found that it was of their victim and another woman at a party on the yacht.
"This torn photograph you found on the yacht shows our victim!" Adalet reports.
"Great job, Adalet!" Amy cheered, "but who's the woman next to her?"
"Don't know," she replied, "she might have some information about Valerie, so we need to find her! Let's compare the files we have on the database and see if we find this mysterious woman! We'll find out who she is, you'll see!"
Adalet snapped a picture of the woman with her phone and sent it to the DMV database. She compares the woman's features to similar ones on file and found a name to go with the face.
"So the woman posing with our victim in the photograph is Angie Cortez! The database says that she lives right by the shore!" Adalet says reading the woman's file.
"That's great!" Amy grinned, "now we can go ask her about our victim! I'm right behind you, Adalet!"
Adalet and Amy drove over to the beach where Angie was said to frequent. They walked along the hot sand and found the party girl lounging in a beach chair under a large umbrella with an icy beverage in one hand and her phone in the other.
"Helloooo! How can I help you, my sweethearts? Do you need help getting into the hottest parties in town?" Angie asks, "I can get you anywhere!"
"Hmm, no," Adalet replied, "but speaking of parties, do you remember this picture you took with Valerie Green? She was murdered earlier today."
"Oh, poor Valerie! She was so innocent, I mean, it's so saaaaad . . ." she sighed twirling her hair, "you see, she was new on the party scene, I just wanted to help her blend in! And the yacht is such a good place to make new friends!"
"How long has the yacht been hosting parties?" she inquires.
"The yacht just arrived in town, and since then it's been a revolution! The old clubs, the silly bars, it's all over now, we've gone national!" she answered pumped, "this place was a dump, and now we see the biggest parties on the coast! This town is a much better place now, too bad Valerie died before she could see it!"
Later, in the morgue . . .
"The sight of divers drowning has a touch of poetic irony, don't you think Adalet?" Roxie muses, "as if Death was like "Well, you asked for it!"
"Oh, please Roxie," Amy sighs, "don't laugh about such a delicate subject! What did you learn about Valerie's murder?"
"Well, I looked a little more closely, and I can tell you she still had her mouthpiece on when she died! She suffocated!" she explains, "but you know me, a clear autopsy like that, it's just not enough! So I took a closer look at Valerie's body, and I discovered traces of cream on her wetsuit and her tank!"
"How did a cream stay on her suit?" Adalet wondered.
"It's a water-repulsive cream to be exact, which is why the water didn't destroy it. And the most interesting thing is that there's no cream on Valerie's skin!" Roxie rambled, "and if the hand cream doesn't come from Valerie, then it comes from her killer! Valerie's killer uses hand cream!"
"Thanks, Roxie!" she grinned, "we'll write it down!"
Adalet and Amy left the morgue and took walked down the halls to the tech lab. Hannah was just finishing up with her research and turned around in her chair to face them.
"I must say I'm not used to analyzing this kind of thing! This tank is a damn bloody mess, Adalet, it was sabotaged by someone who knew what they were doing!" Hannah says picking up the tank, "just look at it, Adalet, the gauge has been modified! No wonder your victim drowned, she had no way of knowing she was running short on air!"
"This killer is clever," Adalet remarks, "go on."
"I'm telling you, the person who sabotaged your victim's equipment had used that sort of equipment before," she promised, "and they wanted that girl dead."
"So, it means that Valerie was killed by someone who knows about scuba diving! Thanks, Hannah!" Amy said writing the new fact down it down.
"And the identification number we sent?" Adalet asked.
"The license plate reveals that the Big Mighty Yacht is registered to the name of Peter Long . . ." Hannah replied with a smirk growing on her face, "I took the liberty to ask Frank to get him to the station. Apparently, Mr. Long refuses to answer to any name but "Mighty Pete". Must be compensating for something."
"Hannah! That's not a way to talk about suspects!" Amy scolds, she then blinked as she realized what her friend had said, "wait, you got Frank to do something for you?! That's impossible!"
"Well," she grinned innocently, "I may have sent him an e-mail in Adalet's place telling him to bring in your suspect . . . But you have your guy here! It saves everyone's time, doesn't it?"
"Can't argue with that logic!" Adalet giggles, "let's got take to this "Mighty Pete", Amy!"
The pair left the tech lab and headed down to the room where the party man was waiting. They entered the room and were greeted with the sight of a man in a pompous captain suit sipping a glass of champagne.
"I must say, I'm rather confused about my presence here. The other policeman was quite . . . persuasive, but I'd like some explanations!" Pete demands swishing the champagne around in his glass.
"I'm really sorry sir," Amy apologizes, "but we need your testimony in the investigation of Valerie Green's death. Did you know her well?"
"Valerie's dead? That's tragic . . . I'm not gonna lie to you, Valerie and I have dated for a short time," he tells them, "I broke up with her a couple of weeks ago, our personalities just didn't match. I must say my womanizing ways don't go well with a lot of women, and well, a relationship like that costs money!"
Adalet resisted the urge to roll her eyes, "your grief is touching, Pete."
"Her death grieves me, but you know what they say, the show must go on!" Pete saluted them with his glass, "I have a lot of work to do for my next party, so if you'll excuse me, I'll go back to my yacht!"
Later, at the Police Station . . .
"So what do you think of the investigation so far, Adalet? We've found Valerie Green, drowned after someone sabotaged her equipment . . ." Amy recounted, "we then discovered that she had recently become a part of the nightlife of the town, and we met Angie with whom she used to party!"
"And we also met that womanizer, Mighty Pete!" Adalet adds, "he rules over the party scene, and he was Valerie's ex! So, what--"
"Adalet, I need you to go to the scuba diving shop RIGHT AWAY!" Andrea ordered marching out of her office.
"The scuba diving shop?" Amy frowned, "but, Chief, we're kind of in the middle of--"
"It can wait! We've been called for help, a bomb has been found in the scuba diving shop!" she told them, "you'll need to get to it before it explodes!"
"Yes chief, right away chief!" she saluted.
"A bomb, why did it have to be a bomb?" Adalet groan, "Amy, the investigation of Valerie's murder will have to wait! Let's go to the scuba diving shop!"
At the Diving Shop . . .
"Oh God," Amy panicked, "we need to find the bomb before it detonates! Let's look everywhere, Capt. Adalet!"
Adalet set Dean and Hunter to sniff out the bomb while she looked around the shop for anything the bomber could have dropped. She saw a row of double-stacked lockers ran along the outside of the shop and that one of them had their victim's name on it. Her dogs began to bark at a package near the shop's counter and she rushed over to disarm it.
"You've found it! You've found the bomb!" Amy jumps with joy, "be careful, Adalet, imagine what would happen if it deton-"
BOOM!
"We're dead! We're . . ." Amy felt her face, "Adalet, we're not dead! The bomb only released smoke! I'm so relieved!"
Adalet rubbed the soot from her face and clothes, "I want to restore the bomb to take a look at it."
"Please be careful!" she says, "and that locker has our victim's name on it!"
"It must be where she stored her scuba diving equipment!" Adalet guessed, "and since the killer has tampered with Valerie's tanks, they must have accessed her locker! Maybe we'll find something on it!"
Amy grins, "let's get to work, Adalet!"
Adalet took the bomb parts and her glue. She ran a strip of glue along the plastic and held the broken pieces together with her hands. She also glued the wires back together and capped her bottle once she was done. It wasn't a pretty bomb, to say the least . . .
"Great job restoring that bomb from the scuba diving shop, Adalet!" Amy says, "I'm so relieved that it was not designed to hurt anyone! We could send it to Hannah, Adalet, maybe she'll learn something from it? What do you think?"
"Perfect idea, Amy," Adalet replied handing her the bomb.
"And since Valerie had a locker here, we should talk to Mike Herbert, the shop owner. Maybe he knows something about her murder!" she volunteers.
"I was just thinking that myself," she replied walking over to the said locker.
"Oh, you think it's a good idea, Capt. Adalet?" she asks, "I'm so happy! I'm learning so much by working with you! Let's keep up the good work!"
Before going to go see the owner about the fake bombing, Adalet walked over to the locked with Valerie's name on it. She spun the dial around and listened for the clicks one after another and remove the lock once it had opened. She saw a strange substance on the inner side of the locker door and took a sample for analysis.
"The liquid you just collected from our victim's locker is gonna be a great help, Adalet!" Amy says confidently, "let's send it to Yann for analysis!"
"And let's go talk to Mike!" Adalet replies walking over to the shop counter.
"Did I seriously get a bomb in my delivery of hand cream?!" Mike shouts seeing the smoke still billowing up to the sky, "what the hell, man!? First Valerie, and now this?"
"Hand cream? Let me write that down . . ." Amy said scribbling on her notepad, "wait, you knew Valerie Green? Capt. Adalet is investigating her murder, did you know her well?"
"I don't care what happened to her," he hisses, "when you turn your back to your close ones for strangers, you have to face the consequences!"
"How can you speak like this of this poor woman's death?" she gasped.
"And what do you mean by turning her back on her close ones?" Adalet asked.
"Because Valerie left me, that's why! We were engaged, I thought she was happy, but she just left me without a second thought!" Mike yells crossing his arms over his chest, "as soon as those guys and their yacht arrived, she left me for that damned Mighty Pete!"
"So Valerie left you for Mighty Pete . . . and in turn, Mighty Pete left her," the captain pondered.
"God, it's just, this whole situation is a damn mess!" he groans, "I just need to go scuba dive for a while, get away from everything . . ."
Later, at Yann's lab . . .
"I took a look at the liquid you collected from the victim's locker, and I can tell you, it was quite a riddle to solve!" Yann says picking up the sample, "at first, I thought it was a sample of the same particular drink mute nuns had given me near the remains of the Aztec pyramids, but it's actually champagne!"
Adalet blinked, "how do you get these two mixed up?"
"A competent diver wouldn't dive under the influence, and we know that the killer must have accessed the locker to sabotage your victim's oxygen tanks!" he reasoned, "which means the champagne was on the killer's fingers!"
"Thank you so much for your help, Yann! The killer drinks champagne," Amy made a note of that, "got it!"
"I would say that this bomb you found in the scuba diving shop is pretty amateur work," Hannah announced walking over to join them, "but that'd be an insult to amateurs everywhere. So let's just say that's rubbish."
"I could have told you that!" Adalet snorted, "I've seen bombs go off, it's not pretty."
"The entire device was just designed to produce a lot of smoke and scare a few people. It's a miracle it even activated! I had no problem finding the bomb maker, of course," she boasted, "I found their name on an envelope used to make the base. There's even the address on it. Do people even try anymore? Anyway, our winner is Leah Davies, an ecology activist. Be careful while talking to her, she has quite a reputation for hysteria!"
"Great job, Hannah! Let's call our suspect to the station, Adalet!" Amy says reaching for her phone.
When Leah arrived at the station, Amy brought her into the interrogation room for questioning. They sat the activist down at the table and Adalet set her bomb down in front of her.

Beast
A threat to the galaxy has come from another, and the Union of intelligent life will go to any length to stop it. Military Quarantine has held for hundreds of thousands of cycles. Traders, merchants, colonists, and Pirates live risky lives along the fringes as the politics from the inner systems fail to see the larger threats beyond their borders. A lone human finds himself far from home with no memories to how he arrived. A failing Trade vessel plays on a desperate gamble, while a malicious parasite searches for a suitable host. ............................................. Author's note: Beast is a story that I wrote a long, long time ago. Some of you might have read it then, back when it was posted on reddit over at r/HFY. It was my first webfiction and made in the spirit of that subreddit's "genre" of humanity being awesome. But, it is also a story that has bothered me a little bit. Just like most new writers tend to do, I made mistakes and errors that feel painful to reread. A Space Opera will be a Space Opera, but I had prose that makes present-me cringe. Still, at the same time, the story is still very much a tale I've never given up on. It was my first adventure into fiction: Beast was a crazy adventure with bodysnatching aliens, galactic war, threats from across the universe... Posting this story here is a way to try and redeem myself a bit. I won't call it a complete rewrite, because it's not, but I have wanted to go through and correct some of the major issues Beast has for a long time and put it somewhere more accessible to read (instead of as posts/comments on reddit) and I figure that now is as good a time as any. Additional corrections you might notice are welcome.

Life in the New World
On the Hiatus: I began writing this novel when I was, in all honesty, very bad at writing. I hope to revisit creative writing in the near future and I plan to, at some point in time, revisit this. I am flattered that many people have taken the time to read this story, but it is not what I intend to start with, as it will likely need a hard rewrite in order to correct many of the more glaring issues it has. Join our hero and follow his exciting adventure through a newly changed world! WARNING their will be violence, profanity,, and gore in this fiction. if any of these make you uncomfortable this is not a story for you turn around and walk away now!!!
