《The Compound》Chapter 6

Steve's three days of break for you quickly wrapped up, and he was back at the office 9 to 5.
You were sure you would be bored and unoccupied during the hours he wasn't there. Sure he had a library with practically every book imaginable, two pools, and countless things to do in your large home, but Steve sat down with you to explain the one expectation and limitation he had.
"I need you to meet with the wives and significant others of investors," He began, "The first week I'll just have you sit down with Rachel and Lyla, and a few of my worker's wives so you can get used to it. I don't want to push you into weird situations, I want to warm you up, but you're going to be a huge help to the business." You nodded, knowing you couldn't disagree considering he was your Alpha.
"So what will I do exactly?" You wanted to know, taking a brief sip of your wine.
"Have brunch with the wives," He sighed, "I know it sounds extremely boring, and they'll probably want to talk about yoga and some shit. I also know you have much larger potential than that, but at least this will be something to do during the day for now, and it will help me and the business."
"Alright," You said, "When does this start?"
"Tomorrow a driver will be here at 10:30 to pick you up. You're going to brunch with Lyla and Rachel." He said, "Obviously all these meetings will be on us, the company, so there will be no worry about pricing or payment." You nodded. "Also, here's your new phone." He brought out a brand new silver iPhone, obviously a plus one judging by its size. "I wasn't sure what color you wanted, so I got a silver one." You nodded.
"Thanks, Steve."
"No problem," He lightly smiled, "You needed one. And you're doing me a huge favor with going out to lunch with these people." You nodded. It wasn't really a favor as you had no choice, but you didn't mind the recognition. "We should probably get to bed sweetheart, we have an early start tomorrow." You followed him into your room, where you took a shower and went off to bed.
The next morning you woke up at 8, after setting an alarm. Grudgingly you got out of bed, and walked down to the dining room where Steve was sitting as he always did, with his newspaper and coffee, but this time in his suit, which you had to admit, he looked really hot in. "Good morning beautiful." He smiled when he saw you, looking up.
"Good morning." You smiled back and sat next to him at the dining room table.

"How did you sleep?" he asked.
"Well," You answered, "You?"
"Great," He lightly smiled and placed the newspaper down, giving his undivided attention to you. "I just got some eggs and fruit for breakfast, trying to keep it light." You nodded.
"Sounds great," You responded, "So what do you have to do today?" You asked. He looked slightly shocked at you when you asked, "Oh, I'm sorry," You retracted, partially embarrassed, "I shouldn't have asked, that's not my place to."
"No it's fine," He insisted, "It's kinda nice. No one really asks." He sighed, "I have a few meetings, a lunch meeting too, and I have to sit in on a pitch." You nodded.
"Doesn't sound really exciting." You admitted and he lightly chuckled.
"It never is." Just then the food came, and you began eating. After breakfast, he got up and said goodbye, leaving to go off to work.
You wandered back to your new walk-in closet and chose a pair of army green paper bag pants, and a loose black button-up blouse. You put your hair up in a tight low ponytail, trying to look as business casual and clean as possible.
You sat down to read for about an hour before the car came, and once it did you got in the back with your purse and was on your way through the still vibrant streets of New York. You arrived at the restaurant about 15 minutes later. The driver opened the door for you, letting you enter into the busy restaurant. "Hi," You went up the hostess, "I'm here under Rogers?" It was a Thursday at 10:30 and the place was packed, giving you a good sign that the food was good.
You could see Lyla already there in a table in the back, the hostess sat you down and you two said hello. "How're things with Steve?" Lyla asked and took a sip of her mimosa.
"Pretty good," You admitted, "What about you and Sam?"
"We're doing pretty good too," She sighed, "I like how he's letting us move slow, but apart of me almost wants to speed up." You knew exactly what she meant.
"I understand," You said, "Steve and I have started sleeping together, not like sex or anything, but just sleeping," You clarified, "But I want to, I don't know, go on a date or something like that. Really start our relationship." She nodded. Just then Rachel arrived too.
You all began talking about what you wanted to do now that you were free. Rachel said she wanted to go to new museums, you said you just wanted to eat good food (which they both related with), and Lyla said she wanted to go to various amusement parks (which all of you agreed you would try and convince your Alphas to go together).

"So how long were you guys in The Compound?" Rachel asked and took a sip of her drink.
"A year," Lyla said and you looked shocked.
"A year?" You asked and she nodded, "How old are you?"
"25," She said, "What about you Rachel?"
"Two years, I'm 26," She said, "My parents and family managed to hide me well."
"I was in there for eight," You said, slightly ashamed. They both looked shocked. "I'm 26."
"Eight?" Lyla asked and you nodded, "That takes guts. I don't think I would've survived any longer if it wasn't for Sam."
"Agreed," Rachel added on. You nodded.
"That place was hell," You mumbled.
"It was," Lyla said. Soon your food came, and you all decided to just get a few plates for the table and share. That included french toast, pancakes, eggs and bacon, and some more. It was all delicious of course.
Halfway through your phone started ringing. "Sorry guys, it's Steve." You told them and they nodded. You answered. "Hey Steve." You answered.
"Hey princess, how is everything?" He asked.
"Really well, thanks," You said, "What about you."
"As good as it can be," He sighed, "I'm on my brief lunch break, I just wanted to check-in."
"Well thank you," You said.
"Alright well I have some work I have to finish, I'll see you after work, alright?"
"Yup, of course." Then he said bye and hung up. "He was just checking in." You told them after they gave you some quizzical looks. Once you all finished, you left. Like Steve said, it was all paid for with one of their cards ahead of time.
You were picked up by the driver and went back to the penthouse where you read some more. It was already one, but you weren't really sure how to kill the upcoming 4 hours. So, you decided to bake cookies.
Although Steve had another private kitchen for the chef in the back, he had an open one too with every ingredient imaginable, and none of them expired. So you settled on chocolate chip.
After making them a lot when you were younger, you knew exactly how to make it. You decided to read first, as you were almost done with your book. After an hour you were, and decided to begin the baking.
It took about an hour, and letting the cookies sit out, eating one and then going to the library to find another book to start. At about 4:30, Steve arrived back. You heard the door open so got up from your chair, laying your book down, and going to greet him, "Hey honey." He smiled when he saw you.
"Hey," You lightly smiled.
"How are you?" he asked and slipped off his shoes.
"Great, how about you?"
"Better now that I'm home with you," he smirked, and you smiled. "It smells like cookies in here." He said and took off his suit coat next, uncuffing his shirt.
"Yeah, I got bored and made some," You said partially awkwardly, "I'm sorry if I wasn't supposed to do that I-"
"There's no need to apologize," He smiled and went into the kitchen area where he grabbed one and ate it, "I could get used to this, these are delicious."
"I'm glad," You smiled.
"I'm going to change out of this and get into something comfier, then we can discuss dinner." He lightly smiled and went off into your room.
A few minutes later he came back out in jeans and a t-shirt. "What are you thinking about for dinner?" he asked.
"I don't know," You answered.
"That's what you say every day," He lightly chuckled and sat next to you. "If there's one thing you've missed that you haven't eaten in a while, what is it?" he asked and wrapped his arm around your back.
"Hmmm," You thought, "Maybe pasta?"
"Pasta it is," he smiled, "We'll get take out, keep it casual."
"Sounds good," You said. He ordered some and waited for delivery to come. "So how was lunch?" He asked.
"Great," You said, "Lyla, Rachel, and I all got along, and the food was incredible."
"I'm glad," He smiled, "That restaurant is great." You nodded.
"What about your meetings?" You asked.
"Same old shit," He chuckled and took a sip of his beer, "It never changes." You nodded. "What's on your mind doll?" He asked and you sipped your wine.
"I just," You began, looking to see that his full attention was on you, "I was wondering if maybe we could go on a date."
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"I know this isn't really my decision, but I do want to see if this relationship works," You began, "So I was thinking maybe it would be nice for us to go on a date, ya know. Like out, make it almost like a first date." He lightly smiled.
"That's a great idea," he smiled, "I didn't even think of that. We'll go out tomorrow. I'll have my people make some reservations." You lightly nodded and smiled.
"As long as it's not too much of a burden-"
"Don't worry," He smiled, "It'll be anything but that."

Almost a Good Person
A memory, a memory of a boy who wanted more than pain, of a girl who wanted more than death, and an Isle that should not exist. The Isle of Red is a small, unassuming, quiet place. It is just large enough for a college, a small town, and maybe even a few more unusual sorts of places. Of course, the townsfolk practically know each other as family. Flush-faced regulars can be found toasting just about anything in the Briar's Brew, then, a few streets away, the same haggle of older women stationed themselves on their perch as they did every day from one of the few balconies in Central Square. They fuss away now, spouting the usual gossip as they watch us all from on high. Then there is the College here on the Isle of Red. My college. It has been often described as an unusual place by a good deal of people on the mainland. If they only would visit -why I am sure they'll soon have a change of heart, they may even come to find it a quaint sort of place, odd but in the same way a tattered old quilt can be both odd looking and warm, and especially soft. We teach mostly the same sort of disciplines here, with fantastic and absolutely normal professors.I must conclude that I am quite smitten with myself. The stage is set with a level of perfection that would have astonished me in my youth. They are coming. Derek will follow her. He knows the weight of reality too intimately, but she will be his true north if only for a short time. A beacon in the storm to show him the stunning pastels and brightness the sun may yet refract through his thinner, sharper pieces. Theoline will lead as she always has- well not always, not yet. She holds onto questions feverishly tight, that one. Lights them up inside like a new type of fuel without the slightest worry of being burned. She knows... There is but a certain few who can look at a map and find nothing where I stand but the Atlantic Ocean. And still, there is earth beneath me, a noisy pub down the road from me, and several people clucking conspiratorially on a balcony above me. She knows... that the Isle of Red doesn't belong here. Neither, technically, do I. (Hello!
