《Fragile Minds ━━ C. DANVERS ✓》six.

All she could think about was what had happened to Carol and why it was that she was going by a different name. She had known her for so long and knew things about her that no one else knew, and it hurt to see that the woman didn't even recognize her. She would've done what she could've to jolt her mind about what had happened, and that was a bad thing.
She glanced over her shoulder and met with Nick's eyes when he exited the morgue, and he let out a small gasp when he looked at her. He didn't expect to see her there, and she just raised an eyebrow at him as he looked at her and she shook her head. The two of them stared at each other for a few seconds, before the two of them began to make their way down the corridors. Neither of them knew what to say to the other, but Nick knew that the woman was going to want to know every bit of information that he got from the Director -- even if she was a higher clearance than him anyway.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ The two of them walked for a few moments before Nick stopped and turned to face her, "Wanna go for a drink?"
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Nick, it's, like, three in the afternoon," Poppy replied to him, but he just gave her a small grin.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Well, I think I know where to find our woman, and it'll be at a bar that you've been to before," Nick replied to her, before nodding for her to follow him. She clenched her jaw as she watched Nick begin to make his way down the corridors again, and she let out a heavy sigh as she followed after him.

The last time that Poppy had ever seen Carol, was after the accident and what had happened to her. All she could remember was that the explosion went off and, when she woke up, Carol Danvers was gone. As if she had disappeared into thin air. She didn't know what to think about anything that was going on around her anymore, and then Carol returned with a whole new identity and acted as if she didn't know anything about the world that she lived on.

And that broke Poppy's heart.
Once Nick heard the sound of Carol's voice and after she asked a few questions to the bartender, he was quick to step out into the open and stare at the woman. Poppy followed after him, her eyes narrowed in on the woman and she didn't know what to think. She was lost for thought as she stared at the woman that she cared so much about, and she would've done anything to know what it was that had happened to her.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "That's classified," Nick replied to the woman after she had asked a question about P.E.G.A.S.U.S, and he gave the woman a smirk as he stared at her from across the bar. "Not unlike the file I started on you." Nick and Poppy both glanced at the bartender, who let out a heavy sigh as he made his way out of the room. She could tell that he wanted to see what was going to happen, but they couldn't have any civilians in their business. "But I see you've changed it up a bit since then. Grunge is a good look for you."
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Did you have a rough day, Agent Fury?" Carol questioned him, taking in the bandages that he had on his eyebrow.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "It was cool, you know. Had a space invasion, big car chase. Got to watch an alien autopsy. Typical nine-to-five," Nick explained to her as the two of them walked along with each other and as Nick made his way around the bar with Poppy right behind him.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "So, you saw one?" Carol questioned them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "We both did," Poppy chimed in as she stared at the woman across from her, earning her attention for a few seconds. At first, it seemed as if Carol recognized her, saw something in her that she didn't see in anyone else. She wanted nothing more than for Carol to realize who it was that stood in front of her, but Poppy knew that it wasn't going to be that easy. It never was.

⠀⠀⠀⠀ "I was never one to believe in aliens, but I can't unsee that -- neither of us can," Nick explained to her as he leaned up against the bar railing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "This is gonna get a little awkward, but I gotta ask," Carol replied, beginning something that neither Poppy nor Nick knew was going to go. But apparently Nick was the one that was quicker to know what she was going to ask before Poppy was.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "You think we're one of those green things," Nick spoke as he pointed between the two of them, which only made Carol shrug her shoulders.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Can't be too careful," She replied.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "You are looking at one hundred percent red blooded Earthman," He motioned over his shoulder to Poppy, "And woman," and the two of them continued to meet Carol in the middle of the bar by the pool table."
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "I'm afraid I"m going to need more proof," Carol added as she glanced between the two of them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "We talking cheek swab or urine sample?"
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "No, the DNA would match," Carol shut it down as she gave the two of them a small grin.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Want my AOL password?" Nick offered, which only made Poppy roll her eyes slightly as she let out a light chuckle.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Nick, I don't think she knows what that is, so what would it do for her?" Poppy questioned him as she turned her attention to him before he shrugged his shoulders.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Skrulls can only sim recent memories of their host bodies," Carol began to explain to the two of them as her eyes flickered from person to person.
⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Nick let out a small chuckle as he motioned his index finger at Nick Fury, "You wanna get personal,"
That was something that Poppy didn't know if she was going to be able to do as she glanced between the two of them because she knew that, sooner or later, she was going to have to mention the fact that she knew Carol. That the two of them had a relationship and that they were friends. But that wasn't something that she was completely worried about. She was worried about the fact that Carol might want her to explain about what it was that she did for a living before the job that she had before, and she didn't want to get into anything about Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S, even though that was something that Carol seemed to want to know about more than anything else.
But even as Poppy thought that things were about to get worse, she could feel a cool draft in the room, and that usually only meant one thing.

NEVER SPLIT THE PARTY: The Adventures of The Creeping Bam (BOOK ONE: The Job)
TAO is a broken world held together with nothing but magic and the will of the gods who protect it and its people. Then thousand years ago THE SUNDERING struck and Tao was almost torn apart by a terrible magical cataclysm which resulted in the planet almost being halted in its journey through the cosmos. It took all the power the gods of Tao could muster to restore its orbit and set it turning again, but in their efforts it was forever changed – its axis was drastically altered, and it now spins in such a way that one face of the world is forever turned from the sun it orbits, leaving half the planet in perpetual darkness. The various humanoid races that survived and now thrive within the habitable parts of THE DAY LANDS have come to live in perpetual fear of what lives beyond THE BORDERLANDS that separate them from whatever dwells within THE NIGHT LANDS, but for ten millennia it has kept its secrets. The land of RUNDAO languishes under the rule of their warlike Northern neighbours, the TEKTEHRAN EMPIRE, while a small, ragtag band of motley adventurers ply their mercenary trade fighting monsters and protecting the common man from the various dangers that haunt the night and prowl the hinterlands on the edges of civilization. THE CREEPING BAM have amassed a modest reputation in their years together, but they’re still just a small-time party of sellswords, thieves, outcasts and mages. They’re also exactly the kind of underdogs the people of Tao doesn’t yet realise are needed to save the world from the encroaching darkness they doesn’t even know is coming … This is a love letter and homage to the high-fantasy worlds of the tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder and Warhammer and the sword & sorcery cinema and literature I fell in love with as a kid growing up in the 80s, from Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian (and the awesome Schwarzenegger movie, STILL my favourite fantasy film EVER), The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and Ron Howard and George Lucas’ Willow, to the more grown-up and edgy worlds of grimdark masters George RR Martin and (my all-time favourite) Joe Abercrombie, as well as a BIG DOLLOP of Terry Pratchett’s immortal Discworld series. IMPORTANT: This story contains material which some readers may consider to be mature, such as battle violence, some strong language and occasional mild sexual scenes. If this is not your kind of thing, this story is not for you. I am also serializing this story on Tumblr, Wattpad, Quotev and Sweek.
