《Memories》XV - Him and Her

I knew I was being unreasonably grumpy at the lady manning the front desk, its not her fault really. I just wanted to completely block Zhuang-jie's nonstop calls and I cant reach the damned General Manager who was supposed to get me a barber and stylist.

And I need to let off some steam, so this happened. Until I heard her.

I froze. That voice. I know that voice. Its the same voice in my head the past year telling me I'm the biggest fool. I can recognize that voice even amidst the noise of the hotel lobby.

Yet the first thing that came to mind was, Shit, I'm wearing my robe! And I look like a homeless bum! In the middle of the hotel lobby! Fuuu--- Since when did I care about my looks!

I wasn't sure if I should turn around, but I know she knows I heard her since my hand is ridiculously frozen midair.

I decided to be a man and just face her, clothes be damned.

I took a deep breath and turned, expecting to see the love of my life in her usual cute short bob and a smirk ready to taunt me, but my jaw dropped when I was faced by a fairy.

If my soul fainted when I first heard her voice for the first time in over a year, it definitely died and had gone to heaven now.

Who is this beautiful wet dream?

"Hey? Sir? I thought you looked familiar.. You're Huaze Lei's friend, right?" the beautiful fairy asked again, now looking unsure. Her forehead creased, and I could just imagine what she was thinking now. She must think l'm a lunatic for openly checking her out.

She was wearing a yellow cloud and all I can see is bare shoulders and beautiful wide brown eyes. I really am an idiot.

"What?" I found himself saying. My former irritation at the hotel manager not answering my calls completely forgotten.

"I'm sorry I must have thought wrong." She tucked her hair behind her ear and a tiny blush crept on her cheeks as she looked like she would start running away any minute now. And whats left of my self control just melted. Not like I had any left at this point.

I cleared my throat, "Uhmm. Hi."

She paused and cocked her head, "Hi..?"

Wait. Wait. Waaaaaiiittt. She was looking at me straight in the eye, like she's never seen me before. Me. Daoming Si. The same handsome asshole in that same painting right in the huge wall of the lobby. That Daoming Si.

Then it hit me.

She doesnt recognize me!

I let out a breath I didnt realize I was holding. Then again, I can barely recognize myself.

"You know me?" I cautiously asked, as I stepped aside and ignored the distraught young woman I was arguing with at the front desk giving us nervous glances.

The tiny fairy in the yellow cloud smiled. She smiled and the world is now a better place. "I don't think so, No. But I saw you talking to Huaze Lei at a cafe once. So I thought you know each other."

"Ah, that crazy guy. Yeah, I know him" I was standing in front of the huge painting of the my family, trying to make a statement and get a reaction from her, but she looked uninterested and was looking around. She really doesnt recognize me!

"Are you here with someone?" I asked, as I ignored feeling a bit hurt at not being recognized by the only person in the world who matters, and dreading that she is here with someone else.

"Yeah, I didnt really think of what I was doing. Look, I have to go. Sorry if I bothered you. I'm going to be late to a school event sooo..." She smiled apologetically as she waved and turned to go. My heart sank deeper than I thought possible.

"Sanchai!" I called without thinking.

-----

Now it was my turn to freeze like an idiot. Only a few people know of my name but definitely not this guy, man or whatever. He looks familiar, definitely more than familiar than just that guy I saw Lei was with but I cant pinpoint it.

I turned around to face him again, "Did you just...?"

"Uhmmm.. Can I take you to dinner?"

I looked at him not sure if I heard him right. I cant help but gape at his confidence while looking like wearing a robe in the front lobby of a world class hotel was the most natural thing in the world. It felt way too familiar, its almost scary. Yet I wasnt scared at all. I was confused but intrigued.

But there's something about his eyes and his lopsided smile that seems soft, and childish, even behind that beard and messy bun.

I know I should be at the event now sipping champagne and faking smiles, but this guy has me captivated by his unfiltered roughness.

Wow, I just thought he looked soft, now he's rough. What is wrong with me tonight?! What was I thinking just approaching a total stranger! And most important of all, why does he know my name?

"You called me Sanchai." I said, avoiding his dinner question.

"I'll explain later at dinner." he tucked his hands in his pockets, and I almost forgot he was still in robes.

"I have a party to go to and a dinner date planned with my friends, I'm sorry."

"Well, tomorrow night then." he said with a huge smile.

"I..." I stammered.

"I'll find you. Have a good night, Dong Sanchai." and with that, he walked towards the elevators and disappeared from sight leaving me there looking confused, excited and nervous.
