《Your Guide to Writing the Perfect Story》Creating Conflict
Advertisement
Every story needs conflict. Without it, what story are you even telling in the first place? To start off, I should probably talk about the two different kinds of conflict. Both are necessary to a good story.
Outer conflict is the problem your character must overcome in order to reach their goal. It should be fairly obvious and for your character, defeating this external force isn't an option. There are three main types of outer conflict.
Man Vs. Man is your character going against another character: the villain. In most cases, this is person or thing that opposes your character, not many. You see this in a lot in superhero stories.
In this case, your character is probably stranded somewhere and has to survive. There is no "antagonist" unless you consider bears and dehydration and whatnot to be it.
This is particularly common in dystopia's, where a corrupt government rules the world and your character needs to defeat them.
Now that you know all of the main different types of outer conflict's, you can mix and match them. Don't confine yourself to just one if your story is forcing you in another direction, but know what your main conflict is.
For the most part there is just one inner conflict, which is man vs. self. Your character probably isn't aware of their inner conflict, but it is one thing that constantly holds someone back from achieving their goal. Usually the inner conflict is that your character must cross a moral line to stop their outer conflict or something of the like.
Example:
Outer Conflict: Jenny must rescue her father from the dungeon of doom.
Inner Conflict: To free him, she must present the heart of an innocent.
Those are the two types of conflict. There's no way for me to tell you how to pick your conflict but there are tips that I can give you when you are.

Whenever you are creating conflict for your character, think "how could I possibly make this situation any worse?" This may be the most effective way to create conflict. It's easy to throw yourself in someone else's shoes and think up all the things that you would be most screwed if they happened.
You might have heard people say to put conflict on "every page". That's easier said than done. The thing is, it isn't possible to have conflict on every single page, but you can aim for 90% of the pages. The sooner you set your character on their path to doom, the more absorbed your readers will be.
Kill your darlings. Yeah, it hurts. You get so attached to a character and then, oh, they're gone. Now, you don't have to necessarily kill them, but if you put them in danger, your character will freak and if they're an especially good or important character, your readers will be dying to know what happens to them. This really gets the pages turning.
Constantly throw problems at your character that force them to make a decision that will go poorly no matter what they choose. This is seen very often and it's a lot of fun to play with.
Give your readers the head fake. What this means is to give them a happy scene or a hopeful scene where everything seems like it's going to be okay and then give them a nice plot twist that drops the world off of it's axis and tips everything upside down. Plot twists are the best tools to man-kind if you are an author.
Create tension between characters that are constantly forced to work together. There's nothing better than feuds among the group of people that are supposed to be on the same side. This one really puts a wrench into any good plans that could help their cause.
That's all that I can think of for now. I hope that this was helpful for you and you'll take these tips to heart when writing your stories!

Universe Online
(Thank you Drakannon for the Cover Art!) My name is Allec Renn, and I was born with ALS. For those of you who don't know what that is, it stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. It basically means that I lost the ability to control my muscles. Its just like Lou Gehrig and Stephen Hawking. By the time I was 6 years old, I was living in a hospital, and from there things progressively got worse. I cannot walk, talk, eat or even go to the bathroom by myself. But there is one thing I can do. Playing games. The advent of Virtual Reality during my early teens greatly alleviated my problems. In the games I can be who I want, what I want. A mighty warrior, a powerful spellcaster, the charming rogue. The crafter. The builder. All sorts of games have come and gone over the years, rising and falling with each advance in VR technology and the ever-increasing power of the Artificial Intelligence's that control them. But now a new actor has taken to the stage. Solar Dynamics, Inc. has unveiled not only the first fully immersive 'deep' Dive Pod, but their flagship game puts all other VR games to shame. Universe Online. No longer are players stuck on a single large world to explore. No longer is there a limit to what you can do, what you can be. Fly spaceships across the universe, conquer planets, create custom technology. Mine, Build, Destroy. Explore. Rule. Do you have what it takes the control the Universe? I'm going to do my best to find out! -NOTE: This story is MATURE, and such has graphic fight scenes, blood and gore. Also cursing. Quite a bit of that in some cases. Sex may also be involved. -NOTE: Like my other story, UO is a work in progress. The storyline, characters, and other things are still in the drafting stages. Also, excuse my spelling and grammar errors!

Of Gods and Dungeons
March 16, 2021 - Hiatus note: I will come back to this story! I'm really struggling with it, though. It's been a number of years and I kind of forgot what the original outline was. I still remember the main path, but not any of the details, because I stupidly didn't write an outline. Progress is being made. I'd like a very decent sized buffer before I start posting again. Don't want to get hopes up only to immediately disappoint! ----- Amy Barnes, an aspiring chemical researcher, finds herself dying from cancer. One of her most desperate prayers is answered in a way that she'd never dreamed possible, and she finds herself living a new life as a dungeon. Warning: Violence, morbidity Cover: Taken from here, courtesy of www.pexels.com by photographer @tookapic. Author's Note: I've read some dungeon core stories on here, and they've tickled my fancy. I've thought up a whole story, start to finish, and thought it'd be a blast to put it into words. Other than the violent and morbid aspects, this story is suitable for children. Aside from the vocabulary, that is. I will avoid the temptation to have any cursing, sexuality, or gore. Excessive gore, I suppose - it is a dungeon story, after all. I’ll do a little research from time to time, but this story will not have a great deal of rigor. I’ve made Amy’s knowledge comparable to my own for that reason. There’s a few things she knows more about than I do, and a few things that she knows less about. Unlike me, she doesn’t have access to Google - it’s a non issue for her to be more knowledgeable than me, on occasion :P This story does not use the same magic system that I’ve used in either Sorcery in Boston or A Summoner’s Confession. This one is mostly intention based, and designed to be easier access for people who are more used to the idea of, “It’s magic, therefore it works” kind of thinking. Do note that Amy is, in most senses of the term, overpowered. This goes along with the usual dungeon core stories. She’s not more powerful than other dungeons per se, but she does have knowledge and intelligence that puts them to shame. I thought about doing this in a LitRPG style, but systems take balance, and I wanted this to be pure fun to write. This story was inspired from a few sources. Despite the title, it wasn’t really inspired by Of Mice and Men, though some of the themes match. Rather, I’ve taken inspiration from a few dungeon core novels on Royal Road Legends for the main idea. Many conventions of dungeon core stories have been perverted from the genre, however. I’ve taken my usual science-loving self to town to play around with the powers, and I can only hope you have half as much fun reading this as I have had writing it.

Cursebreaker
I'm not writing this anymore unfortunately, and I probably won't ever continue it. I guess writing is more difficult than I thought Reto Mason woke up on a mountain, and it was all downhill from there. Until they hit floor, at which point I'm surprised they didn't die to be honest. That is, they didn't die yet. We'll see what happens This is a LitRPG which does have levels and stats, but is more focused on Accomplishments, although expect some more classic RPG stuff in the future. The main focus is on skills, and skill modification/evolution in that regard. Expect some weird 4th dimension stuff eventually, and the weird things that come from there.
