《Counting To Fifteen [Grey's Anatomy]》chapter three - a birthday party

quickly realized that there were a whole lot of doctors that came over all the time.
She had figured that, of course, considering that Mark himself was a surgeon.
But the man didn't have any other friends. It seemed like literally everyone he knew was in the medical field.
It made sense, considering he spent so much time at the hospital. Daisy had only been living there for a week now, and she observed that he was at the hospital a whole lot.
Daisy cringed a bit at the loud talking outside in the hallway. She was boarded up in her room, reading a book, while the party took place in the rest of the apartment.
Callie's birthday was today, and Mark thought that it was the greatest idea to throw her a party at Mark's apartment.
Daisy had seen Callie quite a bit in the past week, and despite her fondness for the woman, she wouldn't be partaking in the party. Parties made her nervous, and she felt much more comfortable being alone and by herself.
She wasn't happy that Calypso was out there though. The six-year-old was undoubtedly dazzling everyone with her charm, but Daisy was upset that she was choosing to partake in the party with a bunch of strangers rather than hang out with her older sister.
Daisy was growing frustrated with the girl, honestly. Despite her countless warnings to keep her distance, Calypso hasn't distanced herself from any of them at all. She speaks to Mark all the time, she speaks to Callie all the time, and she's probably out there speaking to all the party guests right now.
The same thing happened with the Walters. Calypso got too comfortable, and when the Walters retaliated, Daisy was the one that had to jump in and fix everything. If Calypso had just listened to Daisy, maybe they wouldn't have gotten hurt.
And if only Calypso would listen to her right now, maybe they could stop something from happening before it even begins. All Daisy wants is for Calypso to keep her guard up just a little bit, it's not that hard.
Daisy tried to draw her attention to the paperback novel in her hand, but before she could even continue reading, the door burst open.
Daisy winced a bit at the unexpected sound that had shocked her. She looked up to see two women standing in the doorway.
The girl with the black hair frowned, turning to the other girl. "This is not the bathroom."
The second girl hardly paid attention to her words as she looked at Daisy.
Daisy noted that the woman's hair was like Calypso's. It wasn't quite blonde, but it wasn't quite brunette either. It was a mix between the two, like caramel.
"You're the older sister. Daisy, right?" The random woman acknowledged.
Daisy frowned, because that meant someone had been talking about her. Maybe Mark, maybe Calypso, but Daisy didn't feel comfortable with random people knowing her name.
Daisy slowly nodded nonetheless, earning a smile from the woman. "I'm Meredith."
Daisy thought that was a pretty name, but she was too scared to say that out loud, so she settled on a small nod and forced a smile instead.

Meredith turned to the woman on her right, trying to coax an introduction out of her for Daisy's sake. "And you are...?"
"Going to pee myself if we don't find the bathroom." The woman grumbled, seeming genuinely upset that Daisy's bedroom had turned out to be a bedroom rather than a bathroom.
Meredith didn't seem happy with that introduction though, glaring at the woman.
The woman only let out a sigh, looking boredly at Daisy. "Cristina."
Daisy didn't quite know what to say, so she only nodded.
"Are you like...mute or something?" Cristina wasn't trying to be rude, but she was genuinely curious. The girl wasn't speaking at all.
"Cristina." Meredith scolded the woman's rudeness, but Cristina only shrugged.
"I wouldn't blame her if she was. I mean...who the hell thought it was an okay idea to allow Sloan children?"
Meredith frowned. "The last year has been rough for him. He's been lonely."
"So then he needs to get laid! Don't bring children into it!" Cristina whisper-yelled. "I miss the days where McSteamy was McSlutty. He needs to get back out there."
But both women knew that wouldn't happen. Lexie was his person. She was it for him, and Meredith doubted Mark would ever go back into the game.
Meredith couldn't blame him though. If she had to watch Derek slowly die while crushed under a plane engine, she doubted she would ever want to so much as look at another man again.
Daisy was incredibly lost, and she just wanted the women to leave.
But they both kind of just stood there, staring at each other in silent conversation, seeming to forget Daisy's existence completely.
The weird stare-off was interrupted when a shrill device rang out. It was some sort of device that Daisy had never seen before. Sort of like a cell phone, except...it wasn't. It was much smaller.
It was clipped to Cristina's waistband. She looked down at it, immediately groaning as she turned to Meredith. "I have to go in. Evan went back into heart failure. And...I still have to pee dammit!"
Cristina huffed as she walked away. She struck Daisy as a slightly cranky person, Daisy wondered if the woman was always so uptight.
"Is...is she always..."
"Mhm." Meredith confirmed, seeming to know what Daisy was asking.
Daisy noticed Meredith eyeing her bedroom, and she felt a bit uncomfortable. It was bland and boring, nothing special about it. It was just a room that she slept in.
Calypso, on the other hand, had made the bedroom she was sleeping in her own, another thing that irritated Daisy.
You always wait a couple months before decorating at all. Calypso was nesting, and Daisy didn't understand. They've been through this process more times than they can count, why had the girl learned nothing?
"There's cake, I think." Meredith broke the uncomfortable silence. "If you want any. I think there's cake."
Daisy only shook her head. She wanted to get back to her book, is what she wanted. Meredith seemed nice, but she wanted to be alone.

Before anymore uncomfortable silence could ensue, the six-year-old appeared in the doorway beside Meredith, a plate of cake in her hands.
Daisy immediately began to panic though. Food in the bedroom was a major no-no, a rule that Mr. Walter used to enforce with incredible strictness. Daisy had no doubt the rules were the same here, and with Meredith standing right there, Daisy didn't doubt the woman would tell on her.
"What are you doing? We're not supposed to have food in here, you know that, you have to go take it back, you have to go now because-"
"Daisy." Calypso cut off Daisy's panicked rambling. "It's fine. Mark told me to bring this to you."
Daisy frowned, her shoulders dropping a bit as her sister walked into the room and handed her the plate, sitting on the bed beside her.
Meredith wondered why the girl was so anxious. Not that it was any of her business, but she felt bad for her.
The two sisters sat together in silence, and Meredith figured it was her time to go. No use in lingering.
But the six-year-old stopped her before she could leave. "Your daughter is cute."
Meredith couldn't help but smile. Calypso had been entertaining Meredith's toddler for the past half hour. Meredith had never seen Zola warm up to somebody so quickly, and Calypso didn't seem to mind entertaining the child at all.
"You two had fun?"
"Mhm." Calypso confirmed. "I made a castle out of the blocks you brought."
Meredith smiled again, looking ready to say something when the sound of a toddler crying cut her off, and she figured that was her cue to go. Derek would be at the hospital all night, so she was on full parental duty.
"I should go. It was nice meeting you." Meredith spoke as she turned to leave. She earned a smile and a goodbye from the little one, but the older one said nothing, keeping her head down.
Daisy didn't bother to eat the cake in front of her. She wasn't a huge cake fan in the first place, and the icing looked so sickeningly sweet she had no doubt it would give her a stomachache just from one bite.
Daisy instead placed the cake on her nightstand, Calypso peeking over with intense interest.
"Can I have that?" The girl asked, a genuine smile coming on Daisy's face for the first time in days.
"How are you supposed to go to sleep if you eat that?" Daisy laughed a bit. Calypso was already an energetic kid. Cake before bed was not the greatest idea, she'd be bouncing off the walls.
Calypso sighed, looking slightly upset. But the sadness was quickly replaced with a huge smile as she recalled the events of the night.
Calypso's night had been interesting, and as Daisy had predicted, Calypso had spent the evening dazzling everyone with her charm.
The guests had only been there for an hour so far, and already Calypso had built block castles with Zola, gotten a firsthand demonstration of how Arizona's Heelys worked, and had quite the debate about mermaids with a woman named April Kepner.
"And her birthday is in April! Isn't that funny?" Calypso was telling her older sister about the new woman she had befriended, still finding it hilarious that April was born in April. "And...and we're birthday twins!"
Calypso had a thing for people who shared similarities with her. Her love for Callie, for instance, stemmed from the fact that they were both Callie's, just spelled differently. And now April and her both shared a birthday? That was the icing on the cake. These people were the best.
"You have to come meet them!" Calypso said happily, eager to get back into the living room and introduce everyone to her favorite person in the entire world, her big sister.
But Daisy was uneasy with the idea, shaking her head. "I'm just gonna stay in here, Caly."
Calypso frowned. "But...they're nice. They're really nice. You don't want to meet them?"
Daisy shook her head, something that upset her little sister even more. But rather than going into depth about her social anxiety, she fabricated a little white lie. "I'm just tired. I think I need to go to bed."
Calypso understood that. When she got sleepy, she didn't want to really talk to anyone either. It made her feel better that Daisy was just staying in her room because she was tired, not because she didn't want to.
"I'm gonna go back out." Calypso smiled, and Daisy felt a pang in her chest.
It was always like that, though. Calypso was the one that stayed in front while Daisy hid in the back.
Even at school, Calypso has more friends than is normal for a six-year-old. She had different stories about everyone she encountered, all her friends that she played on the playground with, and Daisy was convinced that Calypso had befriended the entire first grade.
Daisy had no friends, though. It was kind of pathetic actually. The only person she had was Calypso, her six-year-old sister, and that just reeked of lameness.
And now even her sister didn't want to hang out with her?
Daisy's thoughts were getting sadder and sadder by the minute, and Calypso noticed.
"You're sad. You don't want me to go back out there, do you?" Calypso asked.
Not really, Daisy wanted to say.
But she choked down her feelings, shaking her head. "I'm just tired. It doesn't matter to me. Just...you know, be careful."
"I'm always careful." Calypso couldn't help but laugh, yet Daisy found no humor in the situation.
Calypso was being far from careful. She was befriending everyone in her path, and Daisy knew how dangerous that was. The social butterfly needed to be a little less social.
Yet before Daisy could remind Calypso that she should tone it down with her sociability, the bedroom door opened yet again. Daisy didn't recognize the red-haired girl, but Calypso immediately beamed at the sight of April.
"Oh." April laughed nervously, surveying the room. "This is not the bathroom."
