《The Assassins of Skyrim |Skyrim Fanfiction|》Chapter 18 Kharjo

The trip to Kynesgrove with Delphine was terrible. She didn't believe any of us that there were two Dragonborns, and argued with Archer and Rapier almost the whole trip.

Shay had disappeared into the woods after Delphine shouted at him for calling her Dolphin. I was starting to wish I had followed Shay when the argument stopped abruptly.

I looked at them. Delphine was glaring ahead of us, Archer was trying to hide a smile, and Rapier looked smug. The woods was starting to thin and I could see Shay walking a short distance away.

"There it is!" Rapier called, pointing to a long, treeless slope with a house half way up. "Thank Talos we're almost there!"

Delphine shot Rapier a disgusted look. "Talos? You believe in him?"

"Yes we do," Archer said icily. "The Imperials were rash to think they could make one of the Nine Divines nonexistent. Nobody has that power except for the gods themselves."

Delphine muttered something under her breath that I didn't catch, but Rapier clearly did. She hissed and lashed her tail.

A woman in a tan and brown dress came running down the road. "Dragons are attacking! You can't go up there!"

"Attacking?" Rapier asked. "Where did they come from? How many?"

The woman looked terrified. "Just one and it came from over the mountains that way." She pointed toward the mountains that were straight ahead of us. "It's circling around the hill."

I didn't see any dragon flying around the hill, but that didn't mean there wasn't one.

"It must be Alduin," Archer said. "We need to hurry!"

We started sprinting toward Kynesgrove, Archer in front, Shay in back, and Delphine, Rapier, and I in the middle.

When we reached the top of the hill Delphine pressed herself against a stone about the size of the Guardian Stones, leaving the rest of us to crouch in the long grass.

Alduin was hovering just above the ground, saying something in the dragon language. Rapier and Archer looked horrified.

There was a sound like thunder and the earth inside the stone circle cracked. A large dragon skeleton clawed it's way out of the ground, leaving a crater inside the stone circle. It glowed, little bits of scales and wing started appearing over the skeleton until it looked just like a dragon.

"Volnilviin," Rapier breathed.

"How do you know the names of every dragon we come across?" Shay asked quietly.

Rapier hesitated. "I don't know how I know I just know."

Archer shook his head. "You could have just said 'I don't know' and left it at that."

"Yes, I could have."

"Will you four focus?!" Delphine shouted in frustration. "We have a dragon to kill and you're all just blabbering."

"I appreciate your pointing that out," Rapier said sarcastically. "We hadn't noticed at all."

I pulled out my bow and started firing arrow after arrow at the dragon. Archer, Shay, and Rapier were also firing arrows at Vonilviin. Delphine was running around underneath him, trying to get a good swing in when he came down.

One of Archer's silver arrows whistled and exploded against the dragon. Volnilviin roared as the arrow's white light spread across it's side and over his left wing. The light started to fade, and Volnilviin fell from the sky, crashing into the ground with enough force to knock everyone but Rapier off of their feet.

I looked up at the dragon and had to look away again. Volnilviin's left wing didn't exist anymore. That was all I could tell from the quick glance I'd taken. Shay had been right. I didn't want to know exactly what those arrows could do.

There was a whooshing sound. Archer and Rapier were surrounded by blue and gold swirling light. I looked back at Volnilviin when I knew everything but the bones were gone. The skeleton looked lopsided. Without the left wing for balance it had tipped onto it's side, the right wing sticking up into the air.

Delphine stared at Archer. "What was that?"

Rapier shuddered, looking at the shining white skeleton. "You don't want to know."

"Yes I do."

Shay looked a little green. "No, trust us. You don't."

Delphine sighed. "I'm sorry I doubted you. It is very clear now that you are both Dragonborn."

"Yes, we know," I hissed. "It seems that you find your eyes more trustworthy than your ears."

"Even your eyes can deceive you," Archer said, looking pointedly behind Delphine. "Your ears, however, are not so easily tricked."

Behind Delphine was a glowing white horse. She jumped when she saw it, staring at it. A strong wind came and the horse turned to dust and blew away.

"My point has been proven," Archer said. "And now we shall be going. We have some very important business at High Hrothgar."

Delphine looked like she would like to argue, but thought better of it. She nodded. "Of course. But we haven't finished our conversation yet."

"Yes we have," I said. "If we're leaving, the conversation is over."

"I have a trick that will get us there fast," Shay said. "Just stand still. I'll see if I can get us there without an accidental trip to Cyrodiil."
