《Heart of darkness》Chapter Twenty-three

The days passed in a haze as I waited for Calia to bring good news. But as everyday passed my heart grew weary and I began to lose hope. Had Damian gotten to her before she could find the passageway or receive Cas's letter?

I mentally slapped myself for thinking of these preposterous thoughts. Calia wouldn't let Damian get to her. She was too strong and smart for him to do that for a second time. But it didn't stop the worrying from slipping through the weak walls in my mind.

Boredom was starting to get to me. The room was getting on my nerves and I didn't know the castle well enough to find a library or kitchen. Maids came every so often to bring me food and clean dresses. Other than that I was alone and bored. I didn't know how Calia did it, a whole week in here and she felt safe! I feel annoyed and crazed.

"Three days until the wedding. Calia, where are you?" I whispered to myself, while looking out the grand window.

It had grown to become a past-time, staring out the window at the gorgeous view. The horizon seemed to go on forever. I could see the maze that Calia had tried to get lost in. I could see a field of tall grass and trees. I wished that I could escape into it, feeling the blades of grass skim my skin and the smell of wheat fill my nose.

The sudden thought of running through it with Cassian filled my mind. We would run far into the blue horizon, our hands enclosed together, our smiles wide and true. My heart longed to be there, to be with him forever as we explored the world we knew little about.

"Aurora?" I heard Calia's voice say from behind me, pulling me from the daydream that seemed too far to reach.

"Calia!" I said excitedly and ran to embrace her.

"It's good to see you too." She laughed at my enthusiasm and hugged me back.

"Do you have any news?" I asked, pulling away.

"I haven't gotten a letter, but I have found the passageway. It was difficult to find and that's what took me so long."

"That's alright, as long as you are safe and out of harm's way." I smiled, the hope I had lost flooded back and I couldn't help but smile.

"We can go now if you'd like."

"Yes, of course. Though we have to hurry. Do you know where Damian and Garret are?" I asked as we walked out of my room.

"They're in the war room going over strategies for an attack on the witches, but of course they have to find them first." Calia stated.

"Then we really do have to hurry. Lead the way." I said and we went through the castle.

I hadn't realized how large the castle was. I wondered if Calia was lost when we suddenly stopped in front of a blank stone wall.

"Why did we stop?" I asked as she placed her hand against the stone.

"We're here." She whispered and started tracing the stones.

I watched her as she continued to trace the wall, a bit of uncertainty went through me as nothing happened. Maybe she had gotten it wrong? Maybe she had forgotten through the short time she had been there.

"Calia, I don't think-" I stopped when Calia walked and disappeared behind the stone. I gasped in shock, what kind of passage was this?

"Aurora, come on." She whispered and grabbed my hand, tugging me into the passageway and out of my shocked haze.

Behind the stone was a dark hallway, I could barely see anything.

"Where does this lead?" I questioned.

"It goes all around the castle, this is just the entrance. Though some had been boarded up when past Kings found them." She answered and started to walk.

"Do you know how to get to the dungeons?" I didn't want to get lost in this maze of hallways.

"Of course... I do." She hesitated.

"Calia?"

"Well I haven't been in these tunnels for years and my memory is a bit rusty." Calia admitted and my worry grew.

"Then maybe we shouldn't be doing this. We could get lost." I bargained.

"It will be fine." She reassured me.

Despite her reassuring words I still felt the crawling of worry and fear. She walked me through the tunnels and it felt as if we had been down here for hours. A never ending list of left and right filled my mind. Suddenly after about the fifteenth left we stopped in front of a wall, my worry rose and just like before I was unsure of Calia.

"Here." She said, pointing at the empty wall.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes of course I'm sure." She said, her voice sounding offended from my uncertainty.

Calia pulled me through the wall and into a luxurious bedroom, obviously not the dungeons.

It was filled with roses and scented candles, sheets of red covered the bed. I sucked in a breath as we stood there. This room looked fit for only a newly wed couple on the night of their wedding.

"This is the honeymoon suit." Calia explained.

"Yeah, I kind of got that." I gulped, if Cas didn't get here soon, I would have to spend a night alone with Damian in this room. The idea sickened me.

"I'm sorry Aurora. Let's get out of here quickly." Calia said, tugging on my arm.

Suddenly, I heard voices from outside of the room.

"Aurora." Calia insisted, I felt my feet begin to move as the door opened to reveal Damian and a guard. I slowly backed into the wall, though somehow I could still hear the conversations in the room.

"I need the wedding to be perfect, no one will be coming in or out once the ceremony begins. Double the amount of guards and place iron across every entrance we had." Damian discussed it with the guard.

"Of course Your Highness." The guard said and I could hear his loud, clanking footsteps leaving the room.

I felt Calia continue to pull me, but I stayed when I heard Damian begin to speak to himself.

"You will not get away from me Aurora, I will make sure of it." He spoke with a sort of wanting in his voice. "You will be mine."

I snuck a peek through the wall, his back was to me though I could see how the muscles in his back were tensed. Hand ran roughly through his dark hair, as if he was frustrated.

My heart pounded and I was done listening to him and I let Calia pull me away. Once we were far enough away so Damian couldn't hear me when I spoke.

"Calia, could you hear him?" I asked, hoping I wasn't crazy, though I knew she had heard it too.

"Yes... yes I could." She admitted.

"How is that possible? The walls were solid stone." I questioned.

"They aren't completely solid. That's how we are able to get through, it's magic."

I mentally hit myself for not thinking of the possibility of the castle being built with magic. The royal family had enslaved the witches when the castle was built. It was all piercing together. His statement about having iron placed around every entrance circled in my mind. I highly doubted that would work since the castle was made by witches.

Calia and I walked in silence for the rest of the way, I thought of all the things Damian would be surprised by when the day of the wedding came. Though first I needed the letter from Cas.

I suddenly felt Calia stop beside me, her hand was skimming the stone beside us and it was placed against another empty wall.

"Now, I'm certain it's this one." She smiled awkwardly.

I didn't respond, I just walked through the magic stone. Not caring if I entered a torture chamber or the Kings suit.

I let out a relieved sigh when I saw the familiar dungeon.

"Aurora?" I heard Lizzy's weak voice say. "Is that you?"

"Yes it's me." I said and went over to her cell on the other side of the room.

"Are you here to break me out?" Lizzy asked hopefully, her frail body seemed to be bursting with happiness and enthusiasm.

"No... we're not." I admitted and watched as her hope filled smile drifted into a frown of despair

"Oh, well then... what do you want?" I heard the bitterness in her voice.

"We need to know where your coven is." I stated.

"We?"

"Me, Calia and my friend Cassian." I said, gesturing to Calia who now stood behind me.

"The queen. You're an idiot if you think I'm telling anything to this wrench. She's the one who kidnapped me and forced me into this cage." Lizzy stated and turned away from me, I could feel the anger radiating from her.

"Lizzy, Calia's on our side. She wants to see the downfall of the royal family as much as us and technically the King captured you." I explained, hoping she would listen.

"But she's part of the royal family, how do you know she's not tricking you." Lizzy spat.

"Because... I trust her." I smiled.

"Well I don't." Lizzy sneered.

I started to say something, but I felt Calia's hand on my shoulder, telling me not to speak.

"It's okay Aurora, I'll let you two talk alone, without me hearing." She said and walked back to the hidden doorway.

Lizzy waited for Calia to be gone before she spoke to me.

"How do you know you can trust her?" She questioned in a hushed voice.

"She was the first person here who actually treated me with kindness and she knows what I'm going through. I'm not the only one who was forced to marry the heir, every queen before us went through the same thing."

"Alright... well she's gone and can't hear us so, I'll tell you where my coven is."

"Great." I smiled and sat down on the hard cold floor.

"There's a forest far to the North of here. It's protected by a spell that makes it seem nothings there and keep out strangers

"Wait, isn't that the forbidden woods?" I asked.

"Well it isn't that forbidden, we just don't trust humans so we keep it hidden." Lizzy stated.

"So, how will Cas get in if there's a spell protecting it?" I questioned.

"I can tell the witches that there will be a boy coming and to let him in."

"Can you even do magic?" I asked, remembering how the bars were spelled so she can't do magic.

"This isn't magic." I stared at her with confusion written over my face. "From the moment witches are born, we have a connection to our coven. We can send small messages through telepathy."

"Why didn't you use it once you were imprisoned?" I questioned.

"I knew that they wouldn't storm the castle just for me. It had to be a special occasion... like your wedding."

"Wait... so they're storming the castle in three days?" I asked.

"I think so... they hadn't told me everything they were planning on doing. They still think I'm a child despite my abilities." Lizzy admitted

"Alright, can you tell them that Cas is coming? And to get ready to storm the castle?"

"Of course." She agreed and I started to leave. "Wait, Aurora."

I paused and turned back around.

"Yes?"

"Watch out. Don't underestimate Garrett or Damian, they're much more powerful than you think." She warned

I nodded and walked away. It seemed I would be having a wedding after all. Just not the one I had planned.
