"I want to die defeating Muzan, and I pray that it will purify my filthy blood. Then, if I am reborn as a human being in a peaceful world without Demons, I will tell you of my feelings for you."
—Obanai Iguro, Demon Slayer
~~~~~
How ironic.
Obanai thought as he walked mindlessly into the streets of a village. He has been assigned to slay a demon that has been leading humans. A bitter smile came up behind the bandage that covered his scar.
He heard rumors about the village being led by a demon. He asked around, some of them cautious about their own words. After talking to a specific person, he already found out where the lair of this demon is.
Kaburamari slithered across his shoulders. Obanai was pretty sure his close friend is upset for not bringing Mitsuri with them. As much as Obanai wants to, he can't and he won't. He doesn't want the risk of his disgusting past being reveal—even a hint—to Mitsuri.
He stealthily followed the man he conversed with earlier. The middle-aged man was more than enough to give him away to the investigative Serpent Pillar.
His eyes widen for a moment, upon realizing this was a clan of human family and most of them—if not all—are men. Obanai find it almost funny.
As he trudged through the tatami floors, heading where the demon is, he heard a scream. Judging by how high its pitch was, he ran faster. E wondered why there was a girl amidst this masculine population of the clan.
Come to think of it, Obanai never saw a single female in this household.
He doesn't need to guess to know what happened to them.
He crashed through the sliding door, not caring who will be hurt in the other side. As soon as his eyes landed on the girl, his mind immediately processed immediately. He saw how the girl lose her balance and how hard she tried her best to get away from the hungering demon.
With one swift and clean cut across the demon's neck, he finished up the job. If this was a situation like any other else, he would've left immediately. But, now, he didn't. The circumstances here are different. Very different.
His heterochromia eyes looked down at the cowering girl. He scanned the girl before him. The girl's body has scattered bruises all over it, don't forget some cuts. She has (H/C) hair that looked awfully bad. The girl has her head in her knees as she hugged them. Kaburamaru already took off and crawled towards the girl.
Obanai grimaced at the sight. This girl reminded him of himself. He was reminded by the cursed blood flowing through his veins and the disgusting genes passed onto him. The girl reminded him of his gross past.
Still, he chose to approach the girl. He crouched down, reaching for the girl.
"Are you alright?" asked he. As soon as his hand made contact, the girl squirmed away from his touch. She was looking back at him in horror. He found out the girl has (E/C)-colored eyes. Obanai tried to reassure the girl this time. "No one's around, only the two of us." Not for long.
Kaburamaru hissed beside him, annoyed. The girl's attention was stripped away from Obanai and transferred to the ebony snake. Her features softened.
Obanai heard a distant pounding of steps. He took the girl's hands, his grip tight. The girl tried to break free from him. Obanai said, "I'm helping you. Stop resisting."
The girl was about to speak when men started to flood in the room. Obanai clicked his tongue, "Tch."
He lifted the girl. He dashed out of the room with the girl in tow.
* * *
Obanai stared back at the girl.
He had asked for her name, but she shook her head. She hadn't spoken a single word ever since he rescued her.
Obanai decided to take her in. Maybe Mitsuri would want a girl around to accompany when he wasn't around. To him, he's returning the kindness the Flame Pillar of that time gave him.
He racked his own brain for a name.
"(Y/N)."
The girl blinked at him.
"(Y/N). That's your name."
The girl looked down, seeming to be deep in thought. She muttered, "(Y/N)."
Obanai tried his best to keep his calm composure, but it was broken for a quick moment when the girl spoke.
The girl looked up at him. A small smile managed its way to her lips. "It's beautiful."
Okay, Obanai is definitely keeping (Y/N).
"Iguro? I heard from crow your back."
Obanai snapped his head towards the door once he heard the voice of Mitsuri echoing throughout his estate. Is Mitsuri really that lonely she went quickly to his estate after receiving his message?
"Iguro— oh! You have a girl in here!" Mitsuri clapped her hand together at the sight of (Y/N) in the room. Mitsuri asked, "What's your name?"
(Y/N) gave Obanai a look of asking permission. Obanai was slightly troubled since the girl can't decide things on her own.
"(Y/N)."
"Hm?"
"(Y/N). My name's (Y/N)."
That's the longest sentence she had spoken. Obanai mentally noted.
Mitsuri marveled at the girl. "What a beautiful name!"
The girl said, "Well, Obanai-sama—"
"Obanai." (Y/N) looked back at Obanai. It took her a second or two to process what Obanai just said.
"Obanai was the one who named me."
Mitsuri looked over to Obanai. She was confused why this girl had no name until Obanai had given her one. Obanai sighed and gestured that the explanation will be saved for later.
"Kanroji."
"Yes?"
"Can you fix (Y/N)'s hair?"
"Huh?" She looked at the girl. Then, she realized how horrible it was. Obanai almost groaned at imagining what (Y/N) could have possibly gone through.
Mitsuri took the girl's hands and pulled her up to her two feet. "Let's get you cleaned up! I wonder why Obanai hadn't let you take a bath yet."
Obanai watched from his spot on the floor as Mitsuri guided you out. As soon as the door closes, a long sigh escaped his lips. It's going to be tiring.
* * *
Mitsuri cannot be more enthusiastic to bring the girl to her estate. She loved the idea very much, but Obanai cannot trust (Y/N) with her yet, even Mitsuri can be a handful sometimes.
Obanai studied (Y/N) from across the table as she stared at the food before her. The girl can't help but feel overwhelmed with the feast in front of her (E/C) eyes. She looked up at Obanai for permission, in which Obanai nodded. Obanai thought the girl was about to eat, but she continued the stare-down with her food.
Obanai sighed. He has lost his count.
"Have you ever eat a proper meal before?" asked he. (Y/N) looked up. She doesn't know what to answer. After all, she has no idea what her proper meal was. She explained to Obanai, "The food I got everyday are leftovers."
Obanai almost broke the chopsticks in his hand. He started to guide (Y/N)'s fingers around the pair of chopsticks. He said, "This is how you hold chopsticks."
He demonstrated how he picked up noodles with his chopsticks. (Y/N) attempted but failed, the noodles dropping back to the bowl. Obanai guided her again. As soon as she tasted the food, Obanai can't help but let a smile on his lips. He watched as she marveled at how delicious the ramen was.
Obanai eat from his spot across the table, watching (Y/N) from time to time. He saw her struggled with the chopsticks, but was still able to manage. Fast-learner.
* * *
Obanai stood beside (Y/N), waiting for her to proceed to her futon.
"You're going to sleep here."
The girl simply gave a low hum. Obanai can clearly tell she has no idea what it is.
With this in mind, Obanai guided her to the futon, tucking her in.
"It's warm," said (Y/N).
Obanai assumed she used to sleep on the floor. "Get used to it soon."
* * *
(Y/N) couldn't sleep. No matter how much she close her eyes shut, sleep won't simply take her away.
With a huff, she sat up.
(E/C) orbs scanned the room. It was a simple, but it was better than the prison she had been stuck until a day earlier. She stood up and silently slid the door, cautious of Obanai. The girl is fully aware she should be sleeping right now. If Obanai caught her, she will get punished. The thought sent shivers down her spine.
As of the moment, curiosity of the new environment is maneuvering her body.
She stepped outside the gates of the estate. She looked around, the night is deep as the moon is high above her in the skies. The estate was surrounded with trees, she could only conclude the estate is in the middle of the forest.
(Y/N) was about to go back inside the estate when a meow of a cat got her attention. She stared at the cat for a few seconds, before it ran away.
"W-wait!" She followed the cat deeper into the woods.
Obanai was about to take off to his area to patrol. As he neared the gate, he noticed it was opened. He was confused at first. He soon registered it might be (Y/N) who sneak out.
He checked the room where she was supposed to be asleep and found it empty. Panic settled in his chest and he immediately left the estate, searching for (Y/N). He let Kaburamaru and his crow free to widen his coverage.
(Y/N) has a terrified look on her face. Her grip around the cat was tight as she stared up at red glowing eyes of a demon. Her body was shaking in fear. She looked around, searching for anything to escape the demon.
The demon was speaking to her, she can tell her, but the fear in her mind couldn't register a sole word at all.
Her body acted upon instinct, narrowly evading the attack of the demon. She screamed, "OBANAI!"
The sound of a blade slicing through flesh filled her ears. Her (E/C) eyes witnessed how Obanai skillfully and easily killed the demon.
Obanai sheathe his Nichirin Blade back to its scabbard. He turned to (Y/N). He was slightly annoyed and mad at her for leaving the estate without his permission. All of those emotions faded away in an instant their eyes meet. (E/C) pupils filled with amazement and adoration stared back at him.
(Y/N) said, "Please teach me how to kill Demons."
