《My Mate the Wanderer》3. Mine

I can't even fully process what I'm seeing there is a half naked man standing in front of me.
It's almost as though I'm getting a sensory overload as I take in the sight of his beautiful face and body.
I'm not normally the type of person to gawk seeing as how shy I am but I couldn't help it. His masterfully sculpted body with broad shoulder strong arms and well defined abs.
But that's only the half of it his brown eyes that seemed to smolder with passion as they looked down at me, and his short messy black hair.
It's almost as if my mouth started watering from how gorgeous he was.
I felt like I could be one of those cartoon character who's eyes pop out of their head when they see a 'babe'.
I felt my cheeks heat up as his gaze lingered on me.
As I looked closely I could tell that even with how well built and mature looking this guy was he probably at most only a couple of years older then me.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." He said in the most attractive voice I have ever heard.
I snapped back to reality and took a step back
"I'm so sorry I didn't know there was anyone here I just came to read and thought this place would be nice" I squeaked out so fast that I bet he couldn't understand half the words.
He chuckled as he stared at me kindly.
"Well, don't let me stop you. I'm Tyler by the way, don't mind me I usually come here to swim in the stream."
I relaxed as I saw that he didn't appear to be some psycho.
"I'm Aubree" I said softly as I looked down at my shoes.

I could still feel the heat in my cheeks. I couldn't believe how ridiculous I must look to his guy.
I mean I'm not carrying a hiking bag and I'm in the middle of nowhere.
He must think I'm a clueless runaway walking around in this forest of the middle of nowhere!
My thoughts are racing because of how embarrassed I make myself, but I step aside with a purpose and plop myself down next to his backpack and dramatically pull out my book.
I try to focus all of my attention onto the book but to no avail, every single time Tyler moves my attention is pulled to him.
I try to keep my eyes focused on my book but I can't stop myself from stealing quick glances at him occasionally.
Every time my eyes wander from the pages they are his with his dark shining eyes.
"You know if you took a picture it would last longer." He says with a laugh.
I can feel my cheeks light up again as I try to bury my face further into the book.
"You should try turning the pages instead of just staring at it. What is it that your reading anyways?" He says to me in a playful tone.
I shift the book upwards from my lap so that he can see the cover.
"The call of the wild" I quietly say as I close the book and set it next to me.
I can tell from the look on his face that he's only asking about my book to be polite but that's a lot more then you can say for most people.
As my eyes drift up and come upon his body I can feel my heart start to race and my body feel weak.
It as though looking at him has some weird reaction on me.

I quickly look down at my hand so my face doesn't turn 10 shades of shy and embarrassed again
"So, umm, why are you all the way out here? It's pretty far from all the other houses in the area." I ask genuinely curious as to why some total stud would be walking around by himself.
All the while never letting my eyes stray from my hands.
I can hear his footsteps approaching me but I don't look up to avoid looking like a flustered little girl.
I can see his shadow come over top of me and I steal a quick glance upward and watch him gracefully sit down in front of me.
"Camping" he say matter-of-factly. "I live up near the top of the mountain, about a 45 minute walk from here. What about yourself? You don't seem much like the camping type, do you live around here?"
I pick up a strand of my hair and rub the ends between my fingers.
"Ya, about 20 minute walk in the opposite direction. So it looks like we'll be seeing a good amount of each other." I say shyly.
Why am I telling a total stranger where I live, I suppose it's because I feel a strange sense of comfort and security in this guy.
"I'm glad to hear that, I'd love to see more of you." He says calmly as his voice becomes more husky and deep.
I can feel my insides flutter at the sound of his voice as I feel my body being almost pulled to him.
I gain my sense of self control back and lean back against the rocks.
As I muster up all of my will I slowly look back at his face to see a cute crooked smile pass across his lips.
Seeing his genuine smile make a smile crawl up on my face too.
"Well," I begin "I really should be leaving soon so that I make it home in time for dinner. My parents will kill me if I'm late."
I can see the look of disappointment in his eyes as be nods to me and slowly stands up.
Tyler extends his hand to me to help me to my feet and I take it.
When our hands touch I can feel sparks travel up my arm and my face get hot.
I quickly pull my hand back at the sudden and intense feeling that just a small amount of physical contact gave me.
I look up to him with a bit of shock in my face and see that his eyes looks darker and more wild.
I can feel ever fiber of my being saying 'mine'.

Malt the Manslayer
This story does not follow a hero. Malt doesn’t slay dragons with a holy sword nor is he granted immense magical power when he transfers. Unlike his three classmates, he was brought into the new world not as a mythical hero, but with stats comparable if not worse than the average townsfolk. Assaulted by feelings of inadequacy and weakness, he leaves the comfortable castle life that the royalty offered him and decides to help his new country in the only way he thinks he can. By joining the war on the southern border. Not a war against mythical beasts or powerful demons, but against other humans. He thought that he’d finish a single deployment then come back to the castle, proud enough to stand beside his friends again. Little did he know that he’d become one of the most feared fighters on the battlefield, killing so many that he’d earn the moniker, “Malt the Manslayer.”

The Queen's Guard
Friedrich Schreiner is a proud gefreiter of the Queen's Guard, 2nd Company: the finest fighting infantry on the continent (barring the Temple Guard; but please don't bring that up). Service is honourable but, with the Empire on a peacetime footing, terribly boring. Affairs take a dramatic turn for the worse when a mysterious invader uses a forgotten and taboo magical means to breach the capital, plunging the nation into chaos and endangering the royal family. With events spiraling out of control, Friedrich is entrusted with a critical mission. Will hot lead, cold steel, and his determination be enough to see him through? The Queen's Guard is what I'm calling a black powder fantasy story: it's set in a loose equivalent of the early 18th century (plus or minus a few pieces I decided I wanted or didn't want). Magic exists, but not in a spell-slinging sort of way: it's Earth-shaking undertakings or minor enchantments forged in by master craftsmen, the grand working of a secretive cabal or a slight nudge to the course of a blow. I, the eternal optimist, have a full trilogy in mind. The first book is The Prince's Arquebusier, hence the cover and the title disagreeing! This is my shot at 2021's NaNoWriMo and RR Writathon! I've hitherto been terrible at writing long-form fiction, so this is an effort to break out of that by having some accountability in being supposed to post chapters regularly. Here's hoping it works! I have an outline, but not too much detail. I'll do my best to avoid continuity errors, doing anything glaringly stupid, or otherwise fluffing my lines, but I can't make any promises on that. Please do let me know any feedback! Always happy to improve. [participant in the Nov 2021 Royal Road Writathon challenge]

ALmond
When Max O'Brien receives an almond with a skull painted on it, he initially plays it off as a prank. But, after his wife leaves town, he begins discovering more of the nuts hidden around the house. More disturbing than that is that some unseen intruder is keeping an accurate running count. The more almonds Max finds, the stranger things get. Mysterious noises. Moving objects. Damaged valuables. It's a haunting that grows in power with each success in the involuntary scavenger hunt. As the almonds pile up so do the threats until Max realizes he may just not survive. ____________________________________________________________________________ Author note - This is a short work originally written for Wattpad's Novella Contest (finished second overall). It's a total of 11 chapters and just about 23k words. I'll post a chapter every 2-3 days so it'll wrap up fairly quickly. Anyone in the mood for a quick goofy/creepy read should give it a try. Thanks.
