《How Far I'll Go》Chapter 5

"Tommy!" A shout from behind made the boy jump, quickly closing his locker upon the panic, only to find that it was none other than his best friend, Tubbo.
"Hi!" he said back once Tubbo had bounced his way over to him, "how are you?"
"I'm good! Excellent! Fantastic!" Tubbo replied excitedly, jumping up and down on his toes.
"What's up, Tubs?" Tommy asked. He'd gotten to know his best friend in the past three months they had known each other for, and knew when he was this excited he clearly had news he wanted to tell Tommy.
"Boy am I glad you asked! I was about to burst trying to keep it in!" Tubbo near shouted at him, "I wanna know if you'd like to come to my house tomorrow after school? You know, because it's Friday?" Tubbo suddenly seemed a little more nervous for Tommy's answer than he had been just a few seconds prior, "of course you don't have to! I just thought we could hang out and that it might be nice and you might like it, well maybe you won't in which case this is awkward-" Tubbo rambled on.
"Tubbo!" Tommy interrupted his friend, "I want to go to your house, chill!"
Tubbo visibly relaxed, shoulders sagging in relief, "well of course you do! I'm so fabulous and you're just clingy!"
Tommy rolled his eyes but didn't deny it, opting to just walk down the hallway towards his class before he ended up being late, Tubbo following after him.
When they arrived at Tubbo's house, it wasn't really what he expected. Tubbo just positively radiated rich kid energy, so excuse Tommy to assume he'd have some huge-ass marble mansion with about five cars outside it, none of which are ever in use.
Instead, what he found was an average-sized civilian house, no bigger nor smaller.
"This is my room!" Tubbo exclaimed happily, pushing open a door that had his name spelt in letters (that weren't even in line) on it. "Do you like it?" He asked, nervous.
When it opened, Tommy found himself gasping in awe. Unlike his own- which was plain white walls and an even plainer bed- everything had this green aesthetic going. To the left of the door sat a white desk with fake green leaves stuck up above it. There was homwork scattered carelessly ontop of it, a few green pencil pots (each different shades. They were lined up in order of shade) sat with different school supplies hiding in them. There was a bottle of water, a pair of earphones, a record player and a stack of books.

Beside his table was his bed. It was a double-bed with forest green sheets draped over it snuggly. It looked comfy, Tommy noted.
Opposite Tubbo's bed, sat a piano in all its glory. A green music stand and a few piano books lying aimlessly across it. Tommy'd never seen a piano before- okay well that was a lie. He'd seen them in movies and occassionly when passing the school's music room, but he'd never known somebody who owned one! They were so expensive! (Maybe Tubbo was rich!)
Next to the piano was a tall wardrobe but Tommy wasn't interested in it because it was boring and brown and just didn't fit the aesthetic Tubbo had going on.
"Wow, Big Man. This is... this is incredible." Tommy said, struggled to find words to describe how much he loved it. He always wondered what would happen if he redecorated (decorated?) his room.. would they notice?
Nope. No. Not thinking about that here. Nope.
"You like it?" Tubbo asked, a grin spreading across his face, stars shining in his eyes.
"Do I like it? I love it, Big T Your room's amazing!" Tommy laughed, only honesty tracing his words.
Tubbo laughed too, grabbing Tommy's arm and tugging his arm inside, making sure to kick the door closed with his foot.
"What do you want to do?" Tubbo asked, taking off his shoes and throwing them across the room not quite caring whete they landed before taking a seat on his bed and gesturing for Tommy to do the same.
Taking his shoes off much more carefully than Tubbo had, Tommy let the bed dip as he sat down next to his friend. Just shrugging. What was he meant to say? He spent his weekends staring at the ceiling or looking through old photographs? No thanks.
"Oh!" Tubbo shouted, an idea coming to mind, "do you like Mario Kart? Have you played Mario Kart?" He asked, already leaning to the bottom drawer in his desk and pulling out two wii controllers.
"Uh- No I haven't, sorry, Big T." Tommy said awkwardly, placing his hand against his neck. Over the past few months where they had been friends, Tubbo had started to learn more about Tommy, and by extension, his family. His family that ignored him like he didn't exist, his family that only realised he was alive when they needed something done and didn't want to get their hands dirty. But Tommy was grateful for Tubbo to know. He was understanding and he helped Tommy try out new things he hadn't had the pleasure of trying out before.

"That's okay!" Tubbo said with a smile, passing Tommy one of the controllers, "I'll just teach you how to play!" He announced and Tommy smiled to himself, letting himself smile all throughout the explanation he was being given on how to play Mario Kart.
They played Mario Kart for a few hours, maybe two or three before they were called down for dinner. And wow, Tommy knew Tubbo had siblings, but he didn't know he had this many. There was the twins Nightmare and Dream (who were the oldest. They were like fifteen or sixteen which is really old), then Tubbo and his younger sisters, Drista and Lani. Tommy knows that isn't a lot of siblings but it still took him by surprise as he thought Tubbo only had like one sibling or something but he seemed to be proven wrong.
Tubbo's mum was nice. She was very talkative, very friendly. She kept smiling at Tommy across the table and it looked almost sad. Almost, because who would be sad for Tommy?
Tommy shook it off as he stepped back into Tubbo's room who had gone to use the bathroom.
He looked around for something to do before sitting down at the piano. Carefully (he didn't want to break it, he'd not be able to afford a new one) he pressed down on a note and something in his mind whispered that it was an E note.. interesting.
He started just randomly pressing down on keys, not really aiming for it to sound good or anything, he was just messing around and having fun.
"Do you play piano?" A quiet awe-struck voice came from behind him and he jumped, surprised. Turning around, he saw Tubbo's youngest sister, Lani, staring at him with eyes filled with stars. "That was some seriously good playing!"
"Uh- haha no, I don't play.. I was just messing around I guess." Tommy chuckled nervously, what was he suppossed to say to the six year old? That his family was shit and he'd never even seen any musical instrument before today? Nah.
Lani's mouth fell open wide enough for flies to fly in as she stared at him in shock. "You- you don't play? But that sounded like somebody who knew how to play!" She insisted, still quite in shock.
"Lani, Tommy, what's going on?" Tubbo's voice came from the door and they both turned to look at him.
Just as Tommy was about to answer, Lani beat him to it, "Tommy was playing your piano and he was so good at it!" she blurted and Tommy gave a sheepish smile as his face turned pink.
"I didn't mean to play it without your permission, I swear. I just... didn't have anything to do while waiting for you." Tommy admitted.
"He was so good at it though!" Lani exclaimed, bouncing over to Tubbo and whispering something in his ear before looking back over to Tommy. "Show him Tommy!" Lani said with a confident smile, putting too much trust that Tommy would be able to remember what pattern he was randomly just pressing random keys in.
What surprised Tommy though, was that he was able to remember it and make it exactly the same as before. That's weird. Huh.
"Wow!" Tubbo breathed, "that was so cool! It is like one of those songs where you can like make up loads of different scenarios that fit it!"
"Thanks." Tommy smiled, face still red from the embarrassment of not being used to compliments at all, let alone compliments on something that he'd done.
"You've got to tell Mr Quackity you can play! He's like head of music and drama and things like this!" Tubbo exclaimed.
"Maybe. I can't get lessons though.. Or a piano. They're too expensive." Tommy said solomely, looking at his feet.
"I'm sure they'll figure something out." Tubbo said, coming over to sit beside him, Lani following. "What are you going to call it?"
"What?" Tommy asked dumbly. What did Tubbo mean by call it?
"Your song." Tubbo elaborated, "what are you going to call it?"
"Oh." Tommy said before smiling.
"I think I'll call it 'Solas'."
