《Hunting Season》Secrets

Adira came to the conclusion that God was a deity of some sort, though she didn't want to believe in it. He mentioned once people gave him the name, but what type of people called that thing God? Whoever they were, Adira secretly hoped they never crossed paths.

"How long have you been here?" The woman asked as she trailed behind the mighty beast. He always moved faster than she did, and it was a struggle to keep up.

"A long time," Came the short response.

Adira stayed quiet after that, not knowing why she was even trying to communicate with something that basically took her life away.

Despite how he appeared on the outside, God was thrilled by how everything was turning out. He fantasized about which parts of the woman he would devour first. Perhaps her eyes? They were round and childlike, almost like a newborn- naive to the world and its sorrows. The thought of them popping into his mouth filled him with ecstasy until a loud cry erupted him from his sick thoughts.

The monster turned abruptly, confused by Adira's pale white face until he realized she had stumbled upon a grave. A human one, to be exact. Adira stepped away from the pile of bones and visible skull she had almost stepped on. Her heart raced at the sight of the clothes scattered around her.

"Oh my god...it's a body!"

God didn't care but examined the remains anyways to amuse the horrified woman. Everything was still intact, preserved by nature and its elements. Adira clenched her hands over her chest as she stepped away from God, who noticed her withdrawal.

"Did you kill them?"

"No." God replied, annoyed by the human's speculation, "Not this one."

Adira was still afraid, but spoke her thoughts freely now that she had made a pact with the devil, "Why do you kill humans?"

God didn't seem to mind the question, and he lifted up the skull from its sockets, "You humans always have to interfere with everything and take what isn't yours." Adira didn't understand what he meant, but she didn't express her confusion. She rubbed her thumb against her hand, waiting for them to continue on their way, but God wasn't finished. He crushed the skull in his fist, dropping the remaining pieces on the floor, "That woman I ate deserved it. She thought she could smoke one final time before killing herself." Adira realized he was talking about Miriam.

"But...why-?"

"This forest belongs to me," God confronted her, sending the woman cowering, "Anything that threatens it, or its inhabitants, is dealt with." Adira didn't know what he meant at first, but after much thought it made sense- though it didn't make it right.

Miriam had died because there was a chance her cigarette could cause a forest fire.

Adira continued looking down until she was sure God was no longer in front of her. She followed after him, thinking about everything that had just occurred. He brutally murdered people who threatened the forest and animals...did that mean he hurt Mitch or his friends? They went inside for the purpose to hunt.

"God?" she asked carefully.

"Yes."

"Please tell me...did you hurt any of the men in the photo I showed you?"

God didn't respond, which made a cold sweat drip down Adira's forehead. She stopped moving, refusing to continue. God noticed and did the same, though he didn't turn to face her immediately. As still as a statue, he spoke in a bone chilling manner, "I don't recall eating them if that's what you meant." It was a half-truth. He did remember them from before, but truth be told food was food and God didn't remember every face he ripped off. He might've seen them a second time around and devoured them then. Who knew?

"Please tell me something. The place we're going to- how long ago did you see them there?"

God didn't want to disappoint the women, but he couldn't recall anything. He only remembered the route, but he knew every part of the forest.

"Why don't you see for yourself," God bluntly stated, pointing to an isolated location in front of him. Adira had to climb up more to see the place, but once she did her eyes widened.

There was a fire pit in the center of what looked to be a gathering spot. She noticed how overgrown and damaged everything was including the benches. It must have been months since someone was last there.

"What's that?" Adira asked when another sight caught her attention. There was a large cage sitting to the side, fit for a bear. It was rusted and damaged due to neglect, but Adira still made her way over to it.

God meant to pull her back, but there was no stopping her. She started to look over everything like she was some detective, obsessing over the smallest details.

"Look," she muttered to herself, thought it might have been to God. "Whatever was in here tried to escape." She noticed a missing bar and old pool of something that looked like rust inside the cage. What happened there?

"That's enough," God threatened.

Secrets are here, he kept repeating as his fingers grazed every tree he passed. They whispered long forgotten memories, until images were suddenly flooding into his mind. Blood on his claws... piles of burning bodies...the men in the cage...

God lifted his gaze when the visions were gone, revealing a familiar, old cabin and an overly curious woman standing in front of it. "Stay OUT." God growled, sending the now terrified human inside the abandoned dwelling. He regretted not devouring her before.

Adira fell inside the cabin, heart beating fast at how quickly things had changed. She knew God was hiding something and didn't feel safe until she had ventured further into the cabin.

The deeper she travelled, the more prominent a certain smell became. She covered her mouth with her sleeve, trying to figure out where the stench was coming from. There was a small room down a hallway to her right, barely illuminated by the outside light. She stared at it from where she was, debating whether she should see what was inside. The odor was definitely coming from there.

The second Adira stepped forward, the floorboards creaked and disguised the sound of the front door opening. She was unaware of a tall, dark figure that had creeped inside. It eyed the back of her head, silently crawling behind her as she continued to walk forward.

"Hello?" Adira asked, not knowing if there was anyone inside the room. She could hear movement, like tapping coming from up ahead. She just couldn't tell what it was.

"H-hello..." She struggled to breathe as the smell of death was now too powerful for her to handle. The second she stepped into the room and turned her head to get a better look, a large claw shielded her eyes. The only thing she saw before everything went dark were a couple of crows picking at something that looked like a lump on the floor.

"Don't look at that," A familiar voice caused her heart to start fighting against her chest. She began to tremble, nausea forming in the pit of her stomach as she slowly turned and met eyes with God. He was crouched down due to the ceiling being too small for him, but even so Adira planned to push past the beast.

"There are things in this forest far too complex for you to understand," God warned. Adira shook her head, trying to get thoughts out of her head before focusing on God again, "What are you talking about? Why won't you leave me alone and let me find them!? Let me find Mitch!"

Adira didn't even wait for a response. She tried to shove God to one side -though it did nothing- and ended up squeezing her way past him. Once she was outside, her knees fell to the dirt as she struggled to inhale fresh air. The scent of rot lingered on her clothes for a moment, and she stayed put until she was sure the smell was mostly gone.

God had been trailing behind, glaring back at the house as the woman recuperated. He had never felt so peculiar before, perhaps because he had never experienced anything like it before. It was awful, unwelcome...the very thought of the cabin made his blood boil.

"I fear nothing," God's slithery voice hissed with anger as he turned to look back down at the woman. His fingers twitched slightly as she stood up hesitantly, stepping back as a menacing aura began to radiate from the beast. "I told you not to go in there," He growled with malice, raising a sharp claw as he stepped towards her. Adira knew at this point there were no more chances. He was going to eat her.

God hissed angrily as Adira began to run away from him. He let out an inhuman screech as the panting human desperately tried to search for some sort of protection or weapon. At that point, the only thing she saw was the cage. It had to work.

Adira didn't even look back until she threw herself inside the enclosure, fumbling with the chains that dangled from entrance. She wrapped it as quickly as she could between the bars for maximum security. God slammed his body against the structure, reaching his claw into the cage as Adira desperately tried to avoid him.

"Get away from me!" She hollered with all her might, searching around for anything to get the creature to stop. There was nothing, however, and all she could do was avoid his attempts to grab her.

God himself was no longer talking, and instead grunted and cocked his head, ravenous for the delicious meal he was being deprived of. The monster's sounds became more distorted, until he was screaming in what could only be described as different voices. Adira shakily pressed her palms against her ears as she trembled at the sight before her, unable to blink.

God was crying out in the voices of his victims- young, old, male, female...she could have sworn she even heard Miriam's pleas mixed in there.

Adira placed her hand over her chest as her mind and body grew heavier. She knew she was passing out at that point, and though she could have avoided it by breathing again she didn't want to. The woman fell back, horrifying voices dwindling into nothing. At one point she could have thought she heard Mitch, calling to her from afar.
